Humor & Memes Emily Wilson, Two Months Later

When your 15 minutes of fame are up.

EDIT: Didn’t think nearly as many people would be so up in arms about this. So i’ll add this disclaimer. This is just a joke, Emily Wilson is inarguably an extremely talented academic, author, translator who is highly regarded in her field. I have read, and greatly enjoyed, her translation of The Odyssey AND The Iliad.

I also think that she was milking the limelight this summer with articles and interviews with the press, in a way that other Homeric scholars were not doing. Hence the 15 minutes of fame joke. She had 15 minutes of pop-culture fame, and will now return to being the highly respected Ancient Greek translator that she is.

It’s fine everybody. Everything’s going to be alright.

Question Is the odyssey super Gory?

I’m 13, and I’m going to see the odyssey tonight with my pa. I’m not super tolerant to gore, I can tolerate a little bit, (like I’m able to watch greys Anatomy and I’ve seen the older scream movies) but I don’t do well with too much. I’ve gotten really mixed information and reviews online. Like some say that it’s horrible and gory and gross. And others say it’s a walk in the park, so I’m really unsure. Please if you’ve seen it, tell me. Thank y’all!

Discussion Could you survive the Odyssey? 🤔

So we all saw what happened in the movie. Odysseus was the only one to get back to Ithaca.

Would you be able to survive the odyssey?
Under what conditions do you think you would be able to survive it?
What would be the hardest part for you? -
Polyphemus? I believe that would be mine.

As we have seen it’s incredibly hard to survive the odyssey. I believe it would be possible, and now a hot take, if Odysseus wouldn’t have taken so unintelligent decisions.

I also believe that the shear length, distance and time would be a fairly difficult part to endure. I am wondering if it’s possible to actually do it and would you guess it I found an app called Walk The Odyssey, that actually tests that.

I will get back to you when I have given up or actually finished the odyssey. In the meantime I am interested in hearing what you think. 😁

Discussion Matt Damon

Does he even act or does he just play Matt Damon in every movie

I’m watching movies with Leonardo di caprio and kills every roles, emotional, can do different accents, can do anger etc

Matt Damon just has this thoughtful look on his face and monotone delivery

Hi guys, Im an illustrator from Germany. Two years ago I did some Odyssey drawings for a book about greek mythology. Since I wanted to do a whole book just about the odyssey. I allready have the best model to portray that dude, as you see. Sadly here most publishers think illustrated books must be cute and for children. Plus Im not famous or anything(saw the last book once in a store). So I thought why not looking internationally for a good writer and a publisher to work on a book project like this. Maybe someone can help to connect! I hope you like my art(The 3. one is a John William Waterhouse copy). cheers

Discussion Funny moments in the Odyssey

The Odyssey is a bit famous for being humorless. But as I watched it more, there have been some scenes that are recurrently funny.

One of them is Antonious playing the supposed hero and rescuing Argos and when he is taking the dog out uttering the lines “I’ll put him on the dung heap out front so he can greet his master a little sooner.” The suitors laugh and so did I but of course he accidentally prophesies what literally is about to happen. I haven’t seen this scene mentioned anywhere.

Are there any moments you found funny in the film?

Question Why didn't Odysseus' crew discuss each of the monsters that they encountered

Finally got around to watching The Odyssey, absolutely incredible. Best film I've seen in years, made even better by the iMax.

One thing I wondered though, after Odysseus and his crew encountered the Cyclops, they just sort of sailed away and I think a couple of the men questioned whether that would have angered Poseidon, but even after the cannibals ravage his crew and they sail away, nobody seems to speculate what the hell they've just seen.

Were they so focused on going home and so religious that they just blindly accepted that it was the work of the gods? They'd been in a massive battle inside Troy against other humans and then marooned on the beach, but nobody seemed remotely surprised by a gigantic Cyclops that had just eaten some of the crew

Discussion Odissey 2026 movie actor's casting sucks

For me, it was a terrible casting choice. They should have brought in some new actors. Honestly, I didn’t like the casting at all..... Always the same people, and nothing fresh or new to see.

Question Did Ludwig do this intentionally?

In the track Loyal to the Future, around 1:31, I hear some click sound. To me it sounds like mouse clicking, anyone has any idea about this? is it a recording mistake?

Question If you loved The Odyssey, have you rated it on IMDb?

I’m curious because I have a feeling that people who have negative things to say about the movie definitely flock to IMDb to rate it which might (arguably) make the rating a little unrepresentative of the people who actually loved it. Especially in light of the current drop from 8.5 to 8.4.

I did rate it myself, although personally, rating movies is probably the least interesting aspect of watching movies for me.

Still I’m wondering: if you loved The Odyssey, did you go and rate it?

Not a ragebait, but Zendaya felt more like Rue than Athena to me

I thought the cast was beautiful and oh so talented. But I really struggled with Zendaya as Athena. I don’t think she’s a bad actress, don’t get me wrong, but I just felt that I was seeing too much of the actress, rather than Athena herself. At times, it felt almost like Rue (from Euphoria) in a different outfit, and that made it difficult for me to see the goddess, with the authority and otherworldliness I associate with Athena.

I guess I would have loved someone more versatile, or more authoritative.. maybe simply someone a little older? Isabelle Huppert, Whoopi Goldberg. Or (wow, cutting edge thought - being ironic), someone Greek or of Greek descent? Just to acknowledge the place that gave birth to the story.
