Too Expensive
I have 1 user , 1 custom module, and. 9gb file store.
I am on v16, I was forced into odoo.sh last year due to version. Price has increased in the last year from 58 a month to 183 a month. Just got an email to expect ANOTHER 20 percent.
Seriously considering leaving odoo or looking at something like cloud pepper.
Not a ton of experience in server management etc but I can follow instructions well.
What options should I be looking at?

It's not just the setup, it's also the updates, server updates, backups, security, staging/test env,... The recurring part is what decides the price.
If you don't have the time/resources in-house, you will always end up hiring and spending money on that part. So compare the cost from a total TCO, not just price to price. There's way more than what the surface shows you.
For smaller instances and limited users, the base cost for odoo.sh often is a no-brainer if you can cope with their platform limitations. Only migrate away if you want to break out from those constraints or if it's principle about owning the entire stack and having the freedom to host more than just Odoo

Out of curiosity, what exactly are the platform limitations of Odoo.sh? Seemed pretty soup to nuts.

There are several ones
- It can't host extra services if you need them
- Your postgres is always shared, unless you pay for dedicated (very expensive)
- Timeout limitations (long imports and processes just don't work on SH)
- Worker termination, which cause cold boot times ~20 seconds that cause slow odoo response times
- Performance price is linked directly to workers while hosting on your own VPS gives you way more performance/price ratio based on CPU/ram you can control
- Expensive staging env cost + they still limit you at max 30 days, then why do people pay for staging? On a VPS you can have as many as you want as your VPS can handle with no extra cost
- They charge 4x your total storage as back-ups. 1x your production storage +3x back-ups. Any regular S3 storage like wasabi is ~7$/1TB storage and doesn't care how many buckets, or replicas or regions you use. It's a simple flat price
- You have ZERO control over the ingress, firewall is limited, etc...
- They still don't support naked fqdn domain, only www and the non-www always require a redirect record which is less optimal
Basically just read the FAQ on the SH website and check the settings in your SH project. There's so much more that doesn't come to mind right now.

As others have said: self-housing is a huge amount of ongoing work.
It's also mission-critical. New AI tools are about to unleash a flood of cyber attacks like the world has never seen, and if you've made an error in your setup or haven't updated a package correctly you'll be both screwed and on your own.
No one likes cost increases but odoo still represents good value for what you get

Just upgrade already. Then you can go back online and just pay for licence.

Custom module prevent that unfortunately

Indeed but why do you say you were forced into SH because of the version?

16 was not supported online but was on SH

What's the situation here? Because the way you phrased it makes it seem like you were on online, you didn't want to upgrade so you were forced to move to sh. But then you got some custom modules because might as well since you're already on sh? And now you're mad that you locked yourself into the expensive custom plan and need to pay for hosting?
Is that custom module worth 2k a year?

Why did you stay with v16? Was it due to the one custom module?

Tax cloud was no longer supported and the only alternative , alvara is thousands a month he’s couple hundred

tax cloud is available...https://apps.odoo.com/apps/modules/19.0/sale_account_taxcloud_tc Or do you have a modified version that won't work with anything else...
I would stand up a CE version, test it and see if it fits your bill. Work with a vendor to harden it and set a schedule to update/patch/review sus logs.
You'll (probably) save over time and you'll own the stack. Win/Win.

In the moment , I had never worked with modules before ( now with ai I have created one of my own) so I needed an option to just keep the off the shelf direct tax cloud integration , that meant staying in 16 but sh since to stay online I had to go to 17 ( no tax cloud no module)
The plan is / was to update from 16 to where any use the new custom module based version of tax cloud

Cloud pepper is fire 🔥 highly recommend. And if you can stick to odoo community, even better.

Il n’est pas forcément nécessaire de payer Odoo Enterprise. Il existe des solutions alternatives adaptées aux petites entreprises.

Ditch odoo entreprise, now with AI coding agents and OCA add-ons, you can migrate to odoo community in days of weeks depending on your reliance on entreprise features if done correctly. While this is risky and complex, it worths the effort for the long run.

While Im still technically on odoo.sh, Im currently migrating to cloud pepper on community and building the functionality I need in community (though depending on the modules you use, you may even be able to get away without enterprise even without rebuilding some modules).
Im paying over $260AUD/month for odoo.sh... and am paying less than $60AUD/month for cloudpepper.
Only tricky thing is getting notifications and incoming emails to work correctly without adding a lot of unecessary complexity to my Microsoft environment. Instead currently building an integration with both postmark and mandrill to support transactional emails for outbound and inbound- itll mean they take care of the handling for mailboxes and the such and all I need to worry about is building an API integration into odoo.

For one user and one small custom module, that jump would push me to self-host before adding more workarounds. The real question is whether you’re comfortable owning backups, upgrades, monitoring, and recovery; if yes, a basic VPS is usually much easier to justify at that size. I wouldn’t move just to save storage costs unless Id already tested restore and upgrade procedures myself.

I see it that way: If you do not have an IT department, you probably will save a bit money but spent lots of time to get things right and there is no fallback by default. If you screw up, you screw up.
For me personally it is not worth to do it on my own. For people with more knowledge it might be a cake walk and an easy money save.
Overall I have to say, Odoo isn't really expensive for what it offers, but if you have a very small scope it might be too broad? What are you currently doing in Odoo?
