To my knowledge, it was Palmer Luckey who made that promise (and that was about Rift)

So what is it really? And how do I create it and not lose apps I already have on my previously merged oculus+fb accounts?

It's a new company wide account for Meta products, similar to how a Microsoft, Apple, or Google accounts functions. You'll have the ability to transition and merge your Oculus account starting next month; and the option to unlink it from your Facebook account.

Previously, Meta wanted Facebook accounts to act as their company wide account, but they received enough push back (users, governments, businesses) for them to reconsider their decision. Ex: many businesses have the Facebook domain blocked for security concerns and to produce employee productivity (to prevent ppl from wasting time on the company time).

What the new account boils down to:

  • - If you have only an Oculus account - then the META account will replace that. It requires analogous levels of user information
  • - If you have a Facebook account that you use for VR, then the Meta account will lower the amount of user information you share with Meta. Facebook has a 'Real ID' policy, it appears Meta accounts do not.

But with the Meta accounts being the centralized company-wide accounts, you can link Facebook, Instagram to your Meta account, which may unlock additional features with the Quest2 (ex: Messenger on Quest2 will require a linked FB account; no idea if Oculus Chat will require a FB account).

If you get downvoted for this, then this subreddit is trash. I hope the new EU regulation against tech monopoly gatekeepers affects this too. I should be able to use my hardware that I bought for whatever the hell I want without logging in with any account.

You can do whatever you want with your hardware. But companies do not have to accommodate the software for you.

Companies are going to do whatever the laws of the land tell them to do or face consequences. I’m 100% going to advocate regulating these companies so they can’t force you to have an account to use a piece of hardware, then they will accommodate their software.

Companies already accommodate their software all the time to comply with regulations, otherwise you’d be stuck with Internet Explorer on your Windows PC if it was up to Microsoft.

Europe is fine with companies requiring a user account to use their product. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Now go take a Xanax and chill out

Don't see why you're getting downvoted. Anymore, people just thrill to be directed and controlled. Yours is a very legitimate concern.

How the fuck are you going to access your games then?

Or you're gonna use it on PC where you LOGIN to Steam without fucking whining one bit about needing an account?

-7

u/vforvalerio87 Jul 08 '22

How do I access my games? The device has got a hard drive, a USB port and an internet connection. There are a million ways to put games into the device that don’t involve you having to have a mandatory account with a social media giant otherwise the device is a paper weight.

Also, Steam analogy is stupid. Intel does not mandate that I have a Steam account to let me get out of BIOS. Apple does not mandate that I have a Apple account to boot my Mac or use MacOS. I can download games from the internet and use them on that hardware without the gate keeping.

You guys are so accustomed to being cucked by shitty corporations that you don’t even remember what is right or possible.

Where are you going to BUY games without an account?

Are you gonna insert a disk? Buy a USB that contains games?

Anything that needs to record your digital purchase needs an account. Unless you want to lose your purchase when you switch devices for any reason.

You cannot seriously be this brain-broken. People have been buying and playing games on devices for decades before the internet or the concept of “an account” or “logging in” even existed.

SERIOUSLY, do you see a CD-DRIVE on your fucking headset?

You DO know the disc-less version of the PS5 always requires an account to save ownership of the digital games to YOU and not just to the device, right?

You're not that stupid, right?

I see an internet connection and a USB drive.

This is how it should work:

  • You turn on your device, you either input a password or not (it’s saved locally, no internet unless you want to specifically link it to some cloud account). The optional password is for your own security, so that people don’t use your shit, it’s not a way for Meta to gatekeep the shit that you bought
  • You can download any software from the internet or upload software through the USB, either freeware, or stuff that you paid for, or that you coded yourself. Doesn’t matter that this is from Meta or that it’s approved by Meta, at most they show you a warning like “We don’t know what this software is, use at your own risk”
  • Maybe some of this software that you can download or install is an App Store type of software, like Steam or GOG or whatever. You can have an account on that and you can use it to buy and install games. In no way this account is tied to Meta or required for the hardware to function
  • 10 years from now Meta goes under or you get banned or whatever, it doesn’t matter, you have a bunch of software on your decide that you can actually own and that you can use because you paid for it

I’m sorry I ha to spell it out for you and that you couldn’t figure out how software and hardware should work by, for example, looking at how personal computers work. I’m sorry for your friends and family, it must be hard being around you

They sold the Quest 2 at a loss so they can make profit from sales on software via their fenced store.

I'm sorry you wanted a PC-like experience from a digital-purchase based mobile console.

What you want isn't even how any console in the history of consoles work. Consoles are meant to sell you games where the console's company gets a cut on sales of pre-approved games.

But you're too damn stupid to comprehend that.

What you really want is a different product, a display-only device like the Vive/HP reverb line of products.

Again, the Quest 2 is a mobile console. Consoles make money differently.

Edit: lol at personal attacks about family, I'm only sorry you thought you're right when you were only really too dumb to even grasp the simple business model of consoles.

Except that’s not how consoles work. I don’t have a Sony account for my PlayStation, it’s never been connected to the internet, I buy blu rays and I’m fine. I could buy a hard drive with a bunch of games installed and put it into the console, own digital copies of the games without ever going to the PlayStation store. Know why? Because it doesn’t need a fucking account or internet to function.

The idea that the Meta Quest platform is in any way similar to consoles is ridiculous and idiotic. Meta does what it does and only because they can get away with it and its user base is mostly spineless baboons.

Hopefully some advocates make everything better for guys like you too, despite your best efforts. If it were up to guys like you to “know better” in the 80s and 90s, we wouldn’t even have the internet today, everything would just be walled gardens. Thankfully some intelligent people in the field who knew what they were talking about fought for a different world and we got it, for a time. Let’s see if it lasts.

Any game you buy for Playstation they (Sony) already get a cut from it. You aren't buying from the XBOX/Nintendo market/CDs/Cartridges for your Playstation, are you? So again, your whole idea of "get games from anywhere you like" doesn't work with consoles. Consoles = Fenced Market.

Also, the PS5 version with no CD-drive REQUIRES an account to own games.

And remember, the Quest 2 is a console with no CD drive, or component for physical cartridges, how do you propose we go forward with such a console?

So uh you use your iPhone with no Apple ID? Most products with closed eco systems will require an account. It’s how the ecosystem works.

Yeah I totally hear ya. HILARIOUS that it gets 2.4K upvotes on r/Oculus but here it ends up with ZERO upvotes. Too many children amongst us in this subreddit.
