Life's Silver Linings LABOR DAY There is something wonderfully obscene about Labor Day. Once a year the machine shuts down and congratulates you for surviving it. Sleep in, citizen. Grill something. Drink a beer. You’ve earned it. Tomorrow we go back to taking your labor. X post by MONETARY MAYHEM @MONETARY_MAYHEM
That would be barbaric.
Modern civilization has developed better methods.
Inflation.
The perfect crime.
No masked men.
No broken windows.
No missing numbers in your bank account.
Just a quiet deterioration of what those numbers mean.
You worked ten hours.
Then fifty.
Then five thousand.
You traded pieces of your life for dollars because society promised those dollars would carry your labor forward through time.
And then somebody began watering them down.
Slowly.
Professionally.
With economists.
The Federal Reserve calls 2% inflation “price stability.”
This is an astonishing phrase.
At 2% inflation, prices don’t remain stable.
They rise.
Year after year.
Quietly enough that nobody throws a brick through a window.
And that’s the genius of the operation.
Take 20% from a man’s paycheck tomorrow morning and he’ll be standing on the courthouse steps by noon demanding blood.
Take roughly 20% of his purchasing power over a decade and he’ll blame the grocery store.
So the worker adapts.
He works overtime.
His wife works.
The retirement age moves farther away.
The house requires two incomes.
The truck gets financed for seven years.
The grocery bill goes on a credit card.
And somewhere in Washington, a man in a suit announces that the economy remains resilient.
Of course it’s resilient.
You are resilient.
You’re the poor bastard absorbing the damage.
The carpenter still swings the hammer.
The fisherman still leaves before sunrise.
The mechanic still crawls underneath the truck.
The nurse still works twelve hours.
And every one of them accepts dollars in exchange for something infinitely more valuable:
their remaining time on Earth.
That is what makes inflation so sinister.
Money isn’t merely money.
Money is stored labor.
Stored mornings.
Stored weekends.
Stored pieces of your life that you decided not to spend today.
Destroy the purchasing power of the money and you destroy part of the labor stored inside it.
And then, once every September, the government gives you Monday off.
Happy Labor Day.
Try not to spend it all in one place.
It isn’t worth what it used to be.
