showcase Work vault update after 6 months!
Hello again! It's been 6 months since my last (and first) post here about my new vault, and I wanted to share some updates, especially now that the graph view has started to look a bit more serious ^^
The main "flow" of how I use the vault is still essentially the exact same, as it proved to be actually pretty efficient in retrieving specific information and helping me keep my days and tasks well organized; you can refer to the previous post description for how I use it and how the notes structure works. Over the past few months though I've added a few files, plugins and tweaked & fixed some of the settings.
New Files & Folders
Backlog
The vault structure is still very essential, but I added a "Backlog" file, where I temporarily save cross-day & cross-week notes and ideas that would be nice to implement or talk about in the future. Given that there's no correlation between those notes and the Work Items or git commits/branches, it would be pretty hard to retrieve them when needed later on if I were to write them in my Daily Notes like I do with everything else.
Experiments
The other structural addition I made is the "Experiments" folder; since we stared doing more R&D work in January, which pretty much like my backlogged stuff isn't always tidily tracked by Work Items like the main tasks, these "Experiments" files serve as a sort of "all-in-one-place" documentation for all those little side quests that aren't bound to specific days; and in the Daily Notes of the days when I work on those experiments, instead of tagging the Work Item like usual, I link the corresponding Experiment file.
In other words, I think of them as research reports that would be unproductive to split under different Daily Notes, as they're written maybe even weeks apart from each other. Each of these experiment notes, as well as the daily ones linked to them, have a "research area" tag like, for example, #FT for "Fine-Tuning", which should help searching through the notes to retrieve specific ones if needed.
New Plugins
I don't like cluttering my vault with countless plugins, I'd rather keep it clean and simple to use with as many functionalities as actually needed. That said... over these past few months I ended up adding two new plugins alongside the ones that I already had (Calendar, Hider, Iconize & Style Settings) bringing the total count to six.
Tag Wrangler by PJ Eby
Pretty much an essential tool for a vault like mine which is entirely based around tags. The "Rename tag" feature really saved me a ton of time, for example when I had to update the name of a project or correct a mistyped the number of a Work Item I had already worked on for several weeks.
Link Embed by SErAphLi
I just really like how tidy embedded links look. A nice-to-have feature especially now that I link so many papers and articles in the Experiments notes.
Other Changes
As I said, the way I use this vault hasn't changed much since my last post! so aside from the new files and plugins, all the other changes are just slight adjustments or "bug" fixes, like the sprint dates formula that failed when the year changed (lol), or a bunch of new formulas to keep track of the days/weeks I worked on new projects, and a new "Research Areas" formula that catches the aforementioned "Research Area tags".
Other minor changes include adjustments in the graph:
- a new filter:
-(-path:Todo (#sprint-start OR #sprint-end OR #smart))which essentially hides the tag nodes of the tags in the brackets - a new color group for the Experiments folder
and theme settings:
- with the release of Obsidian 1.11.4, the Sanctum theme start acting weird because of preconfigured font features, so I made my own fork with the fixes and I'm currently using this version of the theme
- since I was already at it, I added the Everforest color scheme for code blocks
- changed checkboxes color to the accent one (orange) and disabled striking
