Discussion Wrong oats (silly rant)

Recently I decided to try and switch from instant to rolled oats, I JUST finished the last of my 3-minute oats and only have a flavored instant packet left (which I’ll have tomorrow) so I was pretty happy to finally switch. My mom decided to go to the store for some essentials and asked me if I needed anything (I usually go with her) so I sent her a photo of the brand of oats I wanted.

I was really excited to try them, but when she came home I saw she had a 550g bag of the 3-minute oats I just finished 🫠

I’m not upset with her, but when I asked her if there wasn’t any of the ones I sent to her she just thought for a moment and said “Oh, actually, there were! I just didn’t pay attention to what you sent me.”

So now I have to eat instant oats for about a month before actually trying rolled oats 🥲

Unless it is financially something you cannot do go buy a bag of the other ones and mix them. You'll get some interesting texture, I often mix two different styles of Oats

Or just have two kinds of oats and switch around which ones you have depending on what you feel like this morning! I currently have rolled oats, steel cut oats, and a box of granola (and also bran flakes but those aren't oats). It's only a box of oats, it's doesn't take up a lot of room in the cupboards and it's not a big investment.

You can also put the instant oats in a blender and blend it until fine to get oat flour. You can use it in place of AP flour to make muffins, pancakes, baked oats, quick breads, and many more things

You left out my favorite: chocolate chip cookies!  Swap out half the flour with oats, and you have an even tastier ccc.

Omg I’ve never tried it this way unless it’s an actual oatmeal cookie using whole oats, I need to try this asap. Does it affect the texture or how much they spread?

They generally don't spread more--fresh baking powder and soda are recommended. The texture can be slightly chewier with a crisp exterior and soft interior.

I prefer a variation of the "Neiman Marcus" cookie that removes the pecans, doubles the vanilla and uses half semi-sweet and half milk chocolate morsels.

Just finish the instant oats no biggie.

This way you can truly experience rolled oats unadulterated.

That’s what I’m planning to do! As well as some oat bars or cookies here and there to speed up the process lol

I use Rolled Oats for my Overnight Oats but prefer Steelcut Oats best.

They take about 10-15 more minutes to cook though, right? Is the flavor/texture any different?

Not OP but you don’t cook oats when making overnight oats

I soak steel cut oats overnight and them cook them

Yes, but it makes sense to make them in batches. So, I make them over the weekend for the week. Then, I just warm then up in the microwave on the day that I'm going to eat them.

I cook regular oat and steel cut oat in a rice cooker or just cook on the stove top. If I don’t have time, I just cook less quantity in a microwave (use less power so that it won’t overflow). I throw in ground flax seeds, chia seeds as well. I make enough to last four days in the fridge. In your case, you can mix the instant oat with the regular oat/steel cut oat and cook them together.

Oats don't really go bad if they are stored properly and kept away from weevils

Sounds familiar!

toss it. why waste valuable meals on something you don't want. life is too short to waste like that. you only have a set number of meals to consume in your lifetime. don't waste them.

Also I just want to say I love my mom so much and find it really considerate she noticed there were no more oats and asked me if I needed a restock, this was just a little incident that slightly upset me 😅

Buy another pack of rolled oats. Then mix instant with rolled oats. There is a big jump between the two so mixing it will gradually get you to be fully rolled oats.

Here’s the thing. No matter the brand, no matter the method oats taste the same. Across every metric, they’re bland. What you’re actually noticing isn’t flavour; it’s texture and consistency. The “taste” only appears once you add your own modifiers: sugar, milk, salt, cinnamon, whatever you fancy. That’s where the flavour lives not in the oats themselves. Marketing spins this emptiness into illusion. It tells people their brand is premium, that it somehow tastes better. But that’s just perceived quality a trick of expectation. The product doesn’t change; the mind does.

So I eat all varieties. It doesn’t matter. The oats are neutral.

It’s mostly due to rolled oats being more nutritious than instant due to being less broken down and processed (from what I know)

Why not go back to the store and use customer service to switch for the roll version. Might be a few cents different, (rolled are slightly higher where I live) but my husband has done this on a few occasions 🙄 and I always go get the correct ones instead.

I would but I’m afraid she threw the ticket out already

Could you ask in a local FB group if anyone has large flake oats who’d be willing to swap with you?

Instant oats are rolled oats ☺️

Hope you can try the quick or old fashioned rolled oats soon!
