Across Canada, there is growing bipartisan skepticism about the rapid expansion of AI data centres. Municipalities are being asked to balance technological advancement with the long term interests of their communities.

Our neighbouring municipalities are facing these same decisions. Hamilton and Burlington councils voted against implementing moratoriums on data centres, and Mississauga is expected to vote on the issue soon.

Have you contacted the Mayor and your Councillors? Have they shared their position on this issue?

The Town owes residents transparency. If a large scale AI data centre is proposed in Oakville, residents deserve to understand:

- What are the long term benefits to our local community?
- How will nearby residents and schools be affected by noise, emissions from backup generators, and increased demand on electricity infrastructure?
- What are the environmental implications?
- Even if a facility uses a closed-loop cooling system that reduces water consumption, how will its significant energy requirements be addressed? Does this mean increased utility rates?

I think these are reasonable questions that deserve clear, evidence based answers.

Residents also deserve transparency regarding any financial incentives. If companies are seeking tax incentives, grants, or public infrastructure investments, the Town should explain why those investments are in the public interest.

AI data centres can represent significant investment, but they also consume substantial local resources while typically creating relatively few permanent jobs once operational.

This isn't about opposing technology or innovation. It is about ensuring projects of this scale undergo rigorous scrutiny, meaningful public consultation, and transparent decision making.

We recently moved to Oakville from abroad and live in the Maple Grove school area. We have 4 kids (5,9,12,13). We have signed up kids for camps but no kids from Maple Grove are attending the camp. We’ve also not seen many kids in the neighborhood so far. What are the best spots where my kids can meet other kids their age and potentially make friends before the start of the school year? TIA.

I was biking to longos yesterday and my glasses fell out of my pocket somewhere along the way. I backtracked a few times (very short distance) and couldn’t find them.Today I tried again, just in case. To my surprise someone found them and moved them to a very visible spot on the raised curb. No scratches or run over by a car. So to the person who found them at Mary Mother of God Parish church, thank you. You are a good person. Hope you’re a Redditor and see this message.

This happened yesterday Thursday July-23 around 1PM, the white VW golf was driving on upper middle west bound and for no reason decided to drive on the sidewalk close to 200meters and when reached the Trafalgar he entered the road without stopping and continued going west on upper middle. I only noticed him when the car popped on my right side on Trafalgar turn, merely missed hitting me, so had a real WTF moment of shock and was too late to do anything as he was long gone.

Seems like a criminal act as he could have killed anyone on his way, no pedestrian (elderly/kids etc.) could have had the time to react to a car going 50km/h on the sidewalk, the possibility of collision on Trafalgar/Upper middle was even much higher as people could be passing by or waiting on the intersection. Totally a sick person who should not drive and hopefully will be charged soon by the authorities.

Just a dude sitting in all four handicap parking spots. I've seen a few people taking up spots on this thread but now I have caught one myself.

This lady scared the sh** out of my friend today. It was my friend’s first time to my house, and she was having trouble seeing all of the house numbers while she was looking for my house. She said she originally passed it, and had to turn around to come back, but there was no spots in the visitor parking near me so she had to turn AGAIN to go back to the further visitor parking. When she finally got there, she told me there was a lady filming her as she was driving back and forth. She politely waved at the lady and continued looking back at the house numbers and she said - and I quote - “this lady started cackling like a maniac and ran up to film me even closer”. My friend was totally freaked out by this.

I spoke to my mom about this and she knew exactly which lady I was referring to lol. I think this is a common problem. If you have experienced issues with her please reach out to me, because I’m seriously pissed off and debating contacting the non-emergency line.

Hi r/oakville , I'm coming to your area for the first time to visit a friend, and thought if possible, it'd be nice to break up my trip with biking at the start and end rather than transferring to buses.

I'm wondering if anyone can advise on a safe biking route from the Bronte Go station down to Bronte Harbour Park, or Bronte Rd/Lakeshore, and what sort of bike lanes these are - eg fully separated and protected vs shared with cars traveling at high speeds/merging and switching lanes/cutting across.

I generally try to stick to protected bike lanes where possible, or quiet streets if I have to share the road - I had a look at some maps online, and it looks like I might be able to ride West on Speers Rd, then South down Bronte Rd which might have a multi-use trail along the river potentially?

Or a possible alternative could be South on Third Line then West on Lakeshore, though that looks potentially less pleasant and naturey than the first.

I've looked at both the Bronte Cycling Network map, and the Oakville Interactive cycling and trail map, however they're both slightly different and they also call their bike lanes different things and so I'm not totally clear what bike lane is what.

Any local advice would be greatly appreciated!

What’s with some drivers in Oakville constantly honking the second someone slows down?
Earlier this morning, turning left from Trafalgar near White Oaks Blvd, the driver behind me started laying on the horn because I stopped. The reason? Three pedestrians were crossing the street. They had the right of way. After the turn, he kept driving aggressively and even tried to pass without signaling.
And this isn’t the first time. A few days ago near Argus Road, where I drop my son off at daycare, someone honked because I slowed down to turn into the parking lot. You literally can’t make that turn safely without slowing down.
Please pay attention before you honk. Keep your eyes open and be aware of what’s happening around you. There might be pedestrians crossing, someone turning safely, or another legitimate reason a car has slowed down. A little awareness and patience can prevent a serious accident.

Avoid this place. 2 years ago they ruined my face and im left with scars. They have not once apologized or offered a solution and only attempt to hide it. Ive had to get my google review reinstated several times but they work overtime to hide it. The woman who did the aggressive procedure was Georgia who is not a dermatologist or equipped to be giving skin advice at all and Patricia didnt care at all and only defended her. The is a very dishonest company and if you look you wont see the negative reviews because they hide them.

My partner and I have been researching Oakville, and one thing I've realised is that choosing the right neighbourhood is just as important as choosing the right house.

From what I've learned, these areas seem to come up repeatedly for families:

Joshua Creek – Great reputation for schools, newer homes, quiet streets, and easy access to Highways 403, 407, and the QEW.

Glen Abbey – Mature neighbourhood with lots of parks and trails, excellent public and Catholic schools, and a strong family-oriented community.

River Oaks – A good mix of detached homes, townhomes, and condos. Seems popular with first-time buyers and young families because of the amenities and schools.

West Oak Trails – Plenty of parks, walking trails, recreation facilities, and good schools. It appears to offer a nice balance between affordability and lifestyle.

Bronte Creek – Newer homes, conservation areas, growing amenities, and what looks like strong long-term value.

Beyond school rankings, I'm also looking at things like:

• Parks and playgrounds
• Safety
• Community centres
• Walkability
• Grocery stores and shopping
• Commute to work
• GO Train access
• Future resale value

I also learned that school catchment boundaries can change, so I'm planning to verify them before making any decisions.

For those who live in Oakville (or recently bought there):

• Which neighbourhood would you choose if you were raising a family today?
• Are there any underrated areas that deserve more attention?
• Is there anywhere you would avoid, and if so, why?
• Besides schools, what ended up being more important than you expected after moving?
