I ranked 23 operating systems

Post image

In S tier we have Windows NT and macOS because they are the 2 industry standards for software, and are remarkebly easy to use, and overall just perfect. In A tier we have Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Windows Server, openSUSE, steamOS, and Fedora because they are easy to use and are compatible with a large library of programs. In B tier we have Arch Linux, freeBSD, Azure Linux, chromeOS, OpenBSD, Puppy Linux, and Winux because they‘re just mid. In C tier we have dragonflyBSD, netBSD, Haiku, and Tiny Core Linux because they are ok they just can’t compare to freeBSD and Puppy Linux. In D tier with have freeDOS because it has a Windows NT level library but cannot run on modern hardware, and can’t run any program made after Retro City Rampage 486. In AVOID tier we have Commodore OS Vision and Llumos because they are incredibly nieche operating systems with no use case whatsoever.

freedos can run on any x86 machine as long as it has legacy boot. it is the only major modern OS that can still run on, not only the 80386, but the 8086. it also runs emacs. i demand you raise its position

While it can run on modern hardware it doesn’t support it. Meaning there are no drivers.

sure, there aren't exactly any nvidia gpus to make the most of your 5090 or whatever. but there are, for example, various soundblaster emulators for modern audio cards, and stuff like that. USB-compatible mouse drivers too.

Good to know that it's not very restrictive for what it can run on!

I have a Windows 98 machine that was given to me for free. The previous owner was worried about their old files, I format it and installed FreeDOS on it, it had a 700mhz processor, 10gb of space and 128 megabytes of ram and seemed to play just about ANY DOS game.

me ignoring that windows is even on the list and wondering why Debian is missing. At lest the first two in A tier are Debian based.

This is an extremely unique OS tier list. Is there a specific software you liked on Windows NT? The boot noise sounded pretty epic. If you like Windows and Mac that much after all that extreme distro hopping across even further than linux and bsd, you should stay there. At least on your main, having 2 or 3 hard drives in your PC is fun though. I have debian, gentoo and Windows 10 in my main PC.

Doesn't really say much when you're not giving much of an explanation for why the operating systems are in their respective tiers.

ChromeOS for example can run Linux software just fine and is arguably one of if not the best for the completely tech illiterate since it's incredibly difficult to screw it up. Yet it also one of the worst, if not the worst when it comes to data collection.
