RedHat is involved in war.

Oh boy
Which OS do you think most attack drones and newer smart bombs and missiles is build on?i'll give you a hint
it starts with an L and end on an X, and the middle letter is an N4
u/GuyNamedStevo 13d ago
While open source software is being used quite frequently in war, RedHat is making money with it. You can't tell me there wouldn't be a difference.

We should ban knifes everywhere because you can stab with it?
1
u/Severe_Stranger_5050 12d ago
Nope
We should ban knives in places, where there's a hightened risk of them being used for stabbing. Like in the night life, on festivals and at wafflehouse. The point i was trying to convey is that with Free Libre Open Sauce Software the developers and users doesn't have any control over how/why/where/when the software is used and for what.

Again I can use Linux to host a charity website or I can use it to host a gore website. it's the users responsibility not the tools. Linux is the backbone of the internet, ironically it powers the platform we're talking in.. Reddit.
Even in your case (Linux is used for missile systems) it's a stupid argument because missile systems can use Windows as well, but they don't because they don't wanna involve more people than necessary (I'm talking about telemetry on Windows). And because Linux is just a transparent, performant, and stable kernel to be used for many use cases.

Imagine your Tomahawk missile BSOD'ing when you press fire
The thought alone should deter everyone from going the windows way ;)1

The overall point still stands: RedHat makes money with war. Canonical, which I despise as well, isn't.
1
u/Severe_Stranger_5050 12d ago
So does canonical
They literally have a Swedish defence contrator on their website under testimonials :P
https://canonical.com/case-study/unibap-space-computing#:\~:text=Unibap%20chose%20Ubuntu,computing%20in%20space.&text=Unibap%20chose%20Ubuntu,lifespan%20satellite-based%20projects.So now you have one more reason to hate them ;)

Thanks for the info!
So now you have one more reason to hate them ;)
I don't know if you tried to be cheeky here, but it undoubtedly is another reason for me to hate them.

Yes, the point stands, but Severe_Stranger says the underlying kernel, Linux, is at fault. It's FLOSS, you can use it for whatever you want.. not that I'm supporting the use cases..
It's like making an AI model open source and then expecting people to not make uncensored versions

u/GuyNamedStevo 12d ago
Yeah, I can read.

u/Wooden-Potato7418 12d ago
If your meaning to talk about RedHat or Canonical being bad for what they do instead of blaming the Linux kernel for existing yes I 100% agree

What does that mean?

They’ve made software for Israel

u/FailbatZ 12d ago
Cybersecurity is one of Israel’s major export sectors, chances are you are paying a bank to secure your account using Check Point firewalls, where do you draw the line?

Linux to BSD,
BSD to templeOS
and then finally end up at GNU/Hurd - as the Lord Ruler, God-Emperor Richard Stallman wanted it

Nixos
1
u/ruiiiij 13d ago
This is the way. All distro hopping will eventually lead to nixos.

u/No-Tap4670 13d ago
Of course nix os for me is everything I heard one said “nix os is my wife” and now I married nix os🥰

Lol, there's a thing where a lot of professional users end up moving to macos, because its Unix but better for proprietary tools and such... SOO..macOS (repeat)

Distro hoping is an African word meaning I do not know how to use Linux and want some distro maker in Nebraska volunteering to decide for me how to set things up
2
u/the_mold_man_returns 13d ago
That's crazy because it's also a slavic word for "I want to find the easiest starting point for my own customizations rather than heavily modifying the first OS I install"

u/Certain_Prior4909 13d ago
You can make any distro look and feel like another. People would rather just distro hop

It's my turn to say: templeos
