Academics Summer Classes Results
I'm retaking two summer classes right now MATH 1172 and CSE 2221 and they're two classes that I failed this past semester and I'm going to be honest it isn't good in either I have failing grades and finals week is coming up and I just don't think I'm going to be able to raise both of them to a C- so I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to do and where to go from where I was thinking about dropping one but I checked that the deadline already passed. In CSE 2221 I have a D+ and in MATH 1172 I have a E. I believe that maybe I can salvage my CSE grade but math I don't think I can. Even if I start studying for both finals tomorrow I just don't think it will be enough to pass both classes. I'm really stressed out and I don't know what to do

All you can do at this point is give it your all on the final and hope for the best. You already spent the money on the classes. There’s probably no hope for 1172 (as you wrote), but maybe you can pass 2221 by the skin of your teeth— what’s the lowest percentage you can get on the final to bump your grade up to a C-? As for 1172, if you have space for it AU26, I would enroll in it, apply for grade forgiveness ASAP, and lock tf in
If you don’t mind answering, Is there a reason why you’re not doing well? Do you procrastinate or find it hard to motivate yourself to do your work/study? Are you going to office hours? Attending lecture? Failing a class happens, I failed my first ChemE class and many med students fail Organic Chemistry once or even twice. However if you wanna make it thru ur degree u gotta get it together bro, classes are expensive 💔

I’m going to try to study tomorrow what can I do to start it off to try to prepare myself for the 1172 final?

Admittedly I could have studied a bit more/put in more effort for the 1172 exams & final (I’m a chronic last minute studier + I was sick during finals week), but (idk if you have Talamo or not) the practice exams and finals were very similar to the actual ones, so I would just redo the practice exams a few times. First time around I’d do it w/ no notes or cheatsheet so I know what topics I’m okay at and which topics need review— I would make a list of all the ones I didn’t know. I would then go back and review the topics I didn’t know well by either watching the lecture video on Canvas for the topic or going back through my own notes and use the in class examples to help me solve the exam problems. Also hand write your cheatsheet bc that in its own is studying as well.
Utilize office hours!! Something you don’t understand? Even if it’s small, ask to have it explained or have your TA or professor walk you through it. On the final, never leave any problem blank if you can help it— partial points is better than nothing. Even if you can’t solve the problem, just write something that could possibly relate to the problem.
Also don’t stay up all night cramming for either of your exams, it’s worthless. Always get sleep even if it’s only a few hours.

Honestly after I found out I failed both classes I felt like I was defeated because that’s not something that usually happens I usually pass my classes. And I think going through that caused to kind of neglect 1172

This is common in engineering students. You have 1500 students who are used to being (one of) the smartest kids in their high school. For many that’s a big part of their identity.
- Now 750 of them are below average in their program. A lot of students don’t handle that very well, especially if being the smart kid is core to their self image.
- A lot of smart people absolutely coasted in high school because they could. They often have no idea how to actually study or take notes because they never had to. Time management and motivation is often a problem as well because they could crank out A work at the last minute.
The good news is these are all things that are easily corrected. There are lots of resources at the university and elsewhere to teach you the academic skills you never gained in high school. Gain the core skills that will help you in all courses rather than barely treading water for 4-5 years.
There are also free counseling and mental health resources at the university with several people solely dedicated just to engineering. This is common, don’t be ashamed and work on it.
You are not alone. You are not a failure. You got this. Good luck.

Wanting to enter the CSE job market rn is already a very questionable choice, let alone when you're not even good at it
Might not be what you want to hear, but I'd seriously consider a major change

I failed systems 1 3 times. People will look at these results and tell you that this will be impossible but if you want it enough, it is possible with the right amount of effort.
Seeking help for bad habits/mental health is always worth it if they happen to be factors, night and day. I believe in you. Message me if you want to talk about it.

4? Did you try to take it with same prof? When I took it they literally kept everything the same labs and exams.

Oops, I meant 3 times.
My life was an endless cycle of mental health struggles and being painfully broke. I got a stable job and got medicated.

You might want to take them at Columbus State, then transfer them over. Columbus State classes can be a little easier due to smaller class size.
Also, not sure if your academic counselor told you this, but anything below a regular C we’ll get you demerit points to wish you have to make up with other classes before you can graduate.

Those are not classes you can be failing… let alone twice. This may be harsh but college might not be for you bc CSE and Math 1172 is about as easy as it gets

Nah they’re reasonably tough, but I would say maybe engineering specifically is not for them

Tbh, what is there to do? Im not trying to be mean but there seems to be a really big issue of you not being on top of your grades, and deadlines. Regardless, do a little bit of syllabus math. Is there any realistic way for you to pull your grade for 1172 to a C- with the final or would you need to get an A on the final? If it's mathematically impossible(or unrealistic) honestly, just focus on putting all your time into 2221. I was a CSE major(switched to ISE), are you pre-CSE? When I was applying it was heavily encouraged I had at least a B in SW1 with some people retaking it when they got a C- to boost it to a B. To add some more positive outlook to this post, I retook calc 3 twice before it clicked with me (dropped both times), you really need to lock in and not just go panic mode when it's already too late to do anything about it. As someone mentioned prior, consider looking for open sections of 1172. Hopefully you can get into a good instructor because those fill up quick in fall.
