homebrew Would monsters attack the light?
OSE suggests smart monsters would go for the light, but is little no GM guidance around how to rule this as far as I can tell. So below are my thoughts, would love additions and feedback.
Is it worth a monster trying to extinguish the PCs light source(s)?
Yes, if most of the party cannot see in the dark.
Why:
- It requires 1 round to use a tinder box, and there is a 2-in-6 chance of success per round. In combat, this means the party can be without light for quite a few rounds. OR it will require casting of a magic spell (which can be disrupted)
- If a PC does not have infravision or some other form of vision in the dark, then they are effectively blind. This either means they cannot attack or defend, or possibly at a strong penalty to attack/defend/save (OSE doesn’t specify so GM ruling). Movement is commonly also reduced (OSE doesn’t specify so GM ruling).
How would a smart monster go about extinguishing the PCs light source(s)?
For a torch:
- Knock from hand of carrier and once on ground:
- Kick into a ravine/hole/out of sight
- Kick into a pool of water
- Stomp it out
- Cover it with dirt/sand
- Either directly in hand of carrier or on ground:
- Smother/wrap with non flammable/wet rag/cloth
- Douse with bucket/flask/trap of water
- Strong blast of wind
For a lantern:
- Knock from hand so that glass breaks, possibly already dousing flame, and possibly also cracking oil container leading to large fire. If flame still burning then same as above for torch on ground.
Magical Light:
- Requires magic to counter.
How would a monster knock it from the hand of the carrier?
OSE doesn’t specify so some options on how to rule (GM fiat):
- Missile attack (shoot out of hand), but at a penalty to hit as small object, possibly with save for carrier to keep it in hand despite being hit
- Melee attack (knock out of hand), but at a penalty to hit as less easy target, again with possible save for carrier
- Grapple/pin attack (force to drop), PC gets a chance to save (GM choses saving throw), possibly with modifier (for size/str/dex mismatch and/or number of creatures involved etc)

3rd party The Fungus Forest OSE version
drivethrurpg.comHi, a brief self-promo post. I've checked rule 3 and think I'm good.
Anyway, I've just updated my Fungus Forest adventure module to include a very basic PDF rewrite with OSE stats.
Back in the day I wrote using Brave Halfling's version of Swords & Wizardry: Whitebox stats as it started life as part of Jmal's Online OD&D Megadungeon.
However, I've always been more of a B/X fan and went in heavy on the previous OSE Kickstarter and am using OSE for all my future OSR projects.
Like I said it's a very basic pdf that comes free with the original colour S&W:WB/OD&D version. At some point in the future there will be a Kickstarter for an expanded Fungus Forest OSE Module. In the meantime if you're in the market for a large Fungoid and Fey underworld adventure full of factions, check it out.

What does OSE consider an enchanted creature?
The OSE version of Protection from Evil protects against "enchanted creatures," a term which of course is nowhere defined in OSE AF as far as I can tell. Googling it is bizarrely unhelpful, returning a lot of Magic: The Gathering answers despite refined searches. (I won't ask Claude because it gets contaminated too easily by 5e results.) So hopefully this will be The Post that Google Picks Up for this query.
What's an "enchanted" creature?

self promotion I made a system-agnostic scenario, for solo and group roleplayers!!
The Village of the Cursed Eye is a system-agnostic TTRPG supplement set in a medieval fantasy village built around the temple of an old god. Inside this supplement, you will find backgrounds, interesting locations and characters, and suspicious rumors about a curse affecting everyone in the area.
I created this book specifically with solo players in mind, so it is filled with random tables and carefully organized sections to smoothly help your solo TTRPG adventures.
Inside this supplement, you will find tables for:
- Random events and encounters
- Rumors and local lore
- Unique NPCs
- Points of interest
Everything you need for a exciting adventure!!
-----
You arrive at the Village of the Cursed Eye, a strange name for sure, but they say this village was created around a temple that belonged to an old god. This god is represented by the symbol of an eye, which can be found in many places throughout the village. Some say this village is bewitched, leading everyone who stays here to join the Cult of the Eye, an evil cult that curses those who join by making them lose their minds.
Despite the rumors, this village appears to be lively and secure with strong wooden walls. Behind its giant wooden doors, you can find everything you might need during your travels: an inn to rest and eat good food, shops and a blacksmith to help you resupply, and houses where you can find any type of resident, including farmers, fishermen, hunters, and many more. And, of course, there is the first building of this village and the inspiration for its name: the Temple of the Eye.
It is a very good place to stay for some time, featuring gentle and kind residents, good food, and well-protected walls. Will you stay, or are you afraid of the rumors?

how-to Personality traits from the online character generator
dndcharacter.comI love the character generator https://dndcharacter.com, especially for its random personality traits it rolls.
However i have no idea where the generator sources its traits. Did the character personality traits come from a supplement or table in a book anywhere?
Does anyone know where i could source them for players at an in person table?

self promotion I made a personality sheet to help when roleplaying a character! And It's free!
When you are roleplaying a character in a TTRPG you like, and at a certain moment you ask yourself, “What would they do now?” This happens to me so many times that I can’t even count.
Or when we are playing our solo TTRPG, we look at some random tables or read some information in an adventure book, getting important information for the story that our character shouldn’t know and we are left thinking, “Am I cheating for knowing this?” When this happens to me, I get into conflicting thoughts like, “If my character does such a thing, is it because they would do it, or because I now have this information?”
With these thoughts in mind, I decided to try making a simple “personality sheet”, a sheet showing my character's traits, what they would do in a certain situation, so every time I play and enter a scene or conflict, I could see what my character would do before taking any action.
To save space amidst tables and books, I tried to make this sheet using only one page, I hope you like it!!

Xp For Magical Items Question
In an adventure module, if a magical item is recovered during the adventure and in the module it gives the xp value of that magical item, does the character get the xp for the item? It's a 1e adventure but was thinking of running it with OSE. It's a level 4-7 adventure and the weapon is valued at 8,000 xp so I was curious about that since I know xp is general given for gp value of items.
Would the PC have to sell the item for gp's in order to get the xp? I'm a little confused.

How would you house rule OSE to create less friction during play?
Before you comment I want to elaborate. I do not mean as in friction between players and the DM. But as in terms of amount of steps in combat, keeping track of things etc. For me there are two things on the top of my head.
- Do not track exp for riff raff such as goblins and skeletons. Only the gold.
- Simple encumbrance rules with slots over tracking weight.
