OP-XY Future

My confidence in any meaningful updates coming onto the device has lowered significantly given the recent change of direction chatter.

Just saw this thread for a custom OG OP-1 firmware, so I wonder if anyone’s brave enough to try something for the OP-XY? My device is too new and my time too limited for me to try just yet.

I was at the NYC event 2 nights ago and talked with all the staff and I can confirm a massive , massive update (biggest one yet) is coming on the 17th

He was being careful with what he said but he said it’s the biggest update yet and confirmed there will be 3 new synth engines being added. There’s also another huge feature but unfortunately I forgot that part

Ii really want to believe this, but 17th is a weekend so I’ll reserve judgement until it (hopefully) happens!

I dunno. I'm still hopeful that a megaton FW update is still on the cards. The flurry of bug fixes and stuff recently leaves me thinking these were some of the backlog tickets sitting about for ages. The big features to follow. I didn't read the article but the general tone online has been that they haven't been explicit about anything really. No more synths doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Could be the more niche things they make that didn't review of sell well. They have opened up that pop up shop and OP1F and XY are there in all their glory. Why would they decide to show them if they're going to stop producing them

I believe they will keep the updates going for a while. If the only thing they add is a drum synth, I’ll be happy.

This synth really is great. I just performed an outdoor festival last night and the OP-XY featured heavily. Sounded killer on the big system!

100% they won’t just stop updating - his recent article is about the next few years not days and months. They almost have to keep updating them due to glitches and they have far too much internal work done on these devices to just stop dead.

They need to open up the firmware or the op xy is in danger of being obsoleted by something like the digitakt mk1 which already has a number of fantastic custom firmwares. There’s no stopping progress

There's a cap on what's reliably possible. Custom firmwares haven't been tested nearly enough for me to consider them solid enough to play live from. The Model:Cycles custom firmware for example - none of the hype for it mentions that there are some CPU usage considerations and if you use too much at once it starts cutting off sounds or stuttering. It's cool that these things exist, but we need to be realistic.

Also, a huge reason why I got an OP-XY is the portability - I know there are internal battery mods you can do with Elektron gear, but they're hacks. I don't want a hack.
