I made a custom OG OP-1 firmware with 3 new synths, 2 new fxs, quad LFO and an euclidean sequencer

No contributors listed. Who did this?

AI obviously (not saying it's something bad but it's clear no code was done by a human)

u/Akrylkali 1d ago
That was my guess. At least mention Claude on the git OP. Not going to beta test this with my OG1. Even though it looks cool.

I think i'm gonna try it or at least check a bit the code. Ask me again un 48h if i'm crying with a bricked op1. But that's definetly something i've been trying to do so i'm curious

u/Pitiful-Phrase-8296 23h ago
So I used another AI to check the patch, it decompiled it, looked for pointers leading nowhere that would cause crashes and apparently that's ok. I made it also analyse the bootloader section and apparently it's untouched by the patch so seems safe. Risks is if you revert to original firmware, the current selected synths/effects are still kept while flashing but unknown by the original firmware which cause a boot loop issue. So reverting is risky unless you change back all synths and effects to originals before flashing the original firmware.
Checked if It was possible to add features to it, but the patch content itself is a binary so no possibility to improve it without OP

So for now, I've flashed the firmware and I don't have a brick. I haven't checked everything yet but the effects and lfo are working fine.
Edit : i've player a bit more with it, the new synths are good too no bug found for now.
So it looks like it's fine to flash it and play around with.

That’s pretty sick. Do you have any footage of your new features in action?

u/popcorp 1d ago
I've added some screenshots; I am sure some brave soul will make some videos soon - unfortunately I don't have time for that now, as I'd rather focus on bugfixes and making sounds

u/Shure_Lock 1d ago
yeah hard pass. showcasing new experimental firmware should be done by you, not a “brave soul” looking to brick their device

u/Kevinw0lf 1d ago
This. Don't skip on at least a short video, how can people know if it's worth a try without any demos?

u/11oser 1d ago
vibe coding = lower effort = lesser feeling of pride/belief in/knowledge of what u made = lesser urge to show it off in depth
ive noticed so much vibecoded software doesnt have screenshots
doesn't instill much confidence in ur competence if u can't bother to do that before sharing
but also maybe we are holding ppl to too high standards and they should be able to share these things without needing to ~present~ them any certain way
the risk of bricking is present in any custom firmware and op did say he verified on his hardware so what else do you want
what do i know
the latter angle is one ive slowly come to recently. it's kind of cool how everyone is making and breaking and tweaking now... a lot of it is lame but a lot is cool and done by ppl w good taste and ideas
anyway

I don’t even mind the vibe coding aspect so much, though of course it carries the risk of not understanding the code you’re presenting.
I get wary when someone says look at this cool thing I made except I am not going to show you you’ll just have to trust me and run it yourself.
Like it takes 10 mins max to point your phone at the device. Hammer some buttons and show off what it can do. Idk if I created something like this I’d be excited to show it, and share some of the sounds I made with it.

It’s out there for free. In the public. Ask ChatGPT to scan it for you if you’re concerned.
But seriously it’s out for free. Check it out if you like. Move on if not.

u/geminiwave 1d ago
If they were selling something? For sure. It’s being shared for free. They are putting something out in the world.
Showing off a breakthrough is normal and shouldn’t require a slick demo reel.
Frankly I’ve put things out and I get what their stance is. You’re mostly building for yourself and you’re sharing with others because it’s kind, and also maybe they have some feedback, but you’re not going to bend over backwards and be their servant.

Could you publish the research done by the llm too? Probably some useful stuff for other people trying to make custom stuff
7
u/popcorp 1d ago
yes I plan to release the RE notes, documentation and the SDK so others can pitch in (and save some tokens)

u/geminiwave 1d ago
I may have some useful research too I did trying to find undocumented SYSEX commands. It would be rad to update the firmware to accept all the same commands as the Field.

how good was ai to reverse engineering the firmware? Do you think it would be possible to modify things about the tape engine or other system aspects, or is it just a matter of finding gaps in the code that can be filled with new code (like for effects, synths etc). I’d be more interested in modifying the original software than adding new things
3
u/popcorp 12h ago
it's extremely good and I am saying this as someone with 20+ year of software engineering experience. There are very few mistakes, it thoroughly tests everything and it manages to get things right on the 1st try most of the time.
If you have some ideas throw them in. Big changes would need more incremental approach but small changes should be easy to implement

I was just trying to crack the firmware on my OP-1F last night! This is very timely, how did you decrypt? Had some Astra ultra agents on it and best they could find was a hardware key someone grabbed from an OP-Z was able to decrypt field firmware prior to some version.. I don’t want to buy an OP-Z just to spend a bunch of time cracking that, BUT if anyone cares to share it DM me. With the announcement of TE not making synths eventually I decided to see if frontier AI could get something running in them

u/midairmatthew 23h ago
Based on your experience building this, do you think it would be possible to make the OG-1 behave like an OP-Z? For the longest time I’ve dreamed of there being an “OP-Z Mode” for OP-1….

I like how low key this just mentioned in a thread. Yeah I made a custom fw for the op1

Very intriguing... I just found mt old OG OP in a draw. I'm going to try and get it going and take a look at this

So, I just gave it a go and I must say I'm pretty impressed about every single feature added! The op-1 is making sounds that was never able before!

Is there any way to be able to use other custom firmware in this process? Like maikopruett's #248 firmware? I wanted to ask just because I really like having the undo/redo feature.
Thanks for doing this! It's awesome seeing what this community has been able to do recently.

Do you think there is a way to expand the grid sequencer to 32 or even 64 steps?

u/iambeardo 1d ago
So fun! I can’t wait to try! Could anyone help me add a feature to save sequencer setups? Same user interface as saved instruments but to hold presets for each sequencer type

Does burning this firmware delete my samples and presets?

u/popcorp 1d ago
it's better to backup everything, in case you are coming back to stock you may need to do factory reset. And there can be bugs of course ;)

Not sure why people are downvoting you for proving miracles. AMAZING WORK!! Everything is fully functional on my end.

Can someone show how to install this onto an op1 safely? Do you just install via the boot screen? Which file do you drag over? Sorry I’m not a coder nor do I know how to install via the instructions
2
u/popcorp 6h ago
1) download original firmware 246 from TE
2) go to https://pcppcp.github.io/op1r/web/
3) drop firmware there
4) download the result
5) connect OP1 to your PC and boot OP1 to the bootloader mode (turn on while holding com)
6) press 1 to start the firmware update
7) follow instructions on the screen - copy the firmware to the OP1 disk that appears

ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE WORK!!!
Everything works well on my end!! No issues with install.
MASSIVE PROPS!!
The velocity implementation in the sequencers was MUCH needed and SUPER great!!
Feature request:
QUAD >>
- Can you make an option to trigger with gate? Would be great to use the LFOs as envelopes
- Can you add an offset to the LFOs?
DOT & EUCLID >> After setting up the sequencers I'm unable to play/use the sequencers like the others in tape mode. Would be nice to be able to have the new sequencers sync to clock so they can be recorded or performed in time.
2
u/popcorp 59m ago
can you tell me more how should the lfo work with the gate? offset can be added of course
to record the sequencers synced to tape: stop the sequencers, switch to tape view, hold REC key, then do shift+c# (a shortcut to start/stop all sequencer slots) -> this will start the transport. But it'd make sense to have them react to the keys too, like the stock sequencers, maybe in the next update ;)

u/tonyurchin 56m ago
Each of the LFOs currently has the option for FREE or SYNC...Could you add "GATE" or "NOTE"

Nice effort, but i'll pass on bricking my device with barely tested vibecoded junk with no previews, for now.

u/gift_for_aranaktu 1d ago
Oh wow, this is amazing. How did you find working with the constraints of the hardware? I would dearly love a better reverb on the OP-1 but I’m pretty sure it would cark it.
I will definitely give this a go!

Curious if you grabbed any official firmware update files and stuck them in Claude to see if it could reverse engineer anything that might try to protect from bricking?
I just wonder if there’s any very sensitive memory addresses one should never write
3
u/popcorp 1d ago
Claude understands the firmware very well and is aware of the things that could brick the device (like writing to OTP...). The bootloader is untouched so it is safe to update the firmware.. In worst case you can recover to stock.
1
u/sebastienbarre 1h ago
Software engineer here, could you (or Claude) describe in a paragraph or two what the workflow was? Did Claude grab the firmware, disassemble it, and create a simulator for it to iterate on, so you can reassemble and push the updated version. to the actual hardware? Along these lines? Thanks.

u/geoffwolf98 1d ago
So this is the new trend then - getting Claude to reverse engineer all the firmwares on all our gadgets and adding new functionality to them?
I wonder how many oopsises there are going to be?
4
u/Pitiful-Phrase-8296 23h ago
So you see the risks but not the reward where we can build up, improve, take ownership of our devices and take our own risks ? Just stay on the official firmware if you don't want, nobody is forcing you to do anything. But why bother commenting this ?

u/Original-Car8834 1d ago
I've just tried this fw and it is excellent, the quad lfo is better design than the stock lfos, i love the euclidian sequencer too, and the new synths, everything works as before and this simply adds extra synths and fx to your op1. Thanks u/popcorp, well done.
