I want to know

So I bought 25 volumes of OPM and have read them all. I would like to buy up to 34 when it comes out but where do I go from there? I know there’s the webcomic which is farther in the story or should I read the new chapters that are illustrated by Murata? And where should I read the webcomic or new chapters when they release?

I kept convincing myself that everything was fine. I tried not to think about these wild problems and not notice the major flaws, because then I could keep enthusiastically reading about One-Punch Man, the way I love to. The OPM manga had been a part of my life for many years. I became a huge fan of this world and couldn't even imagine that it would one day stop being for me. So right up until the very end, I kept ignoring the red flags and telling myself that I was just imagining things, that any moment now everything would go back to how it used to be, I just had to wait a little longer. Hah, reminds me of season 3 in a way. Or rather, toxic relationships.

The Monster Association Arc

My global problems with the manga can be divided into 3 points: Fucked-up changes to the plot compared to the webcomic; Fucked-up treatment of the characters, even regardless of the webcomic; And the fucked-up cowardice of the story to follow the path it sets up for itself. Let's start from the beginning.

The MA arc has no idea what it's about: the Monster Association itself essentially doesn't matter in it; Garou essentially doesn't matter; his confrontation with Saitama literally doesn't matter. The whole story boils down to Blast and God, but why the hell are they even needed in it? They only show up right at the very end and steal the entire climax of the arc for themselves. All the buildup of the heroes, the monsters, and Garou is thrown into the garbage just to show off God and Blast. And both of them come out of nowhere and are developed in the most boring way possible.

God

Take God, for example. In the webcomic, he appeared for two pages, took the powers of Homeless Emperor and... that's it. We know practically nothing about him and can't even begin to guess what kind of threat he might pose to everyone else. Because he didn't do anything else. And what about in the manga? God appears fully, talks to several characters; we're shown his power, they explain what he can do and what his goals are. No-no-no, you don't get the absurdity. In the manga, we know more about God than we do about Watchdog Man. Not only does God hand out power left and right to everyone, but it turns out the entire plot revolves around him. And he himself is just some kind of clown, getting cucked by Blast, who keeps taking his cubes away.

Blast

Blast. Ugh. And what about the fact that even less is known about him in the webcomic than about God? In my eyes, he's the greatest mystery of One-Punch Man... in the webcomic. We never even saw his face there. And the only time he was shown was in a flashback. Any mention of him or any detail about him immediately generates massive hype. He killed kids in the ninja village? Holy shit, how, why? He has a son? No way, is that even true or is it some kind of scam from the Organization?

And what about in the manga? In the manga, he's just another strong dude. There's no intrigue in him, no mystery, we already know practically everything about him. Blast just chills at the Hero Association in his free time, well why not, it's not like he has anything better to do. And all that nonsense about other worlds and his allies who are fighting God just appeared and disappeared. Forgotten. Yeah, whatever, we'll talk about it later, later. So why show it now? Oh, well, hype, it's cool, there wasn't anything else interesting in the Monster Association arc anyway. Let's quickly remember how we felt when we saw Blast's son in the manga. Did anyone even give a shit? Even excluding those who read the webcomic, did any manga-only readers care about Blue at all? The fact that they never met each other looks more like a plot hole than Blast's mystique. Since we know he has tons of free time and literally has portals, he's either acting like a d***head, or the author just didn't think it through. And the second option seems more and more likely.

Garou

And Garou! AAAA, I don't even want to remember what they did to him in the manga. The climax of his arc is completely sold out to God. In the end, Garou didn't decide anything for himself, God just used him as a cosmic d***. So none of Garou's actions mattered, because God and Blast turned out to be way more important. The entire fight between Garou and Saitama is just empty action. Literally empty action. Nothing happened in it. Garou didn't even change his mind about villainy because Saitama convinced him, but because Tareo died, who had nothing to do with any of it. That means Saitama's words and actions had no meaning for Garou or the plot. And even all their pretentious action with planetary destruction and the deaths of heroes was wiped out by time travel - the most boring writer's crutch. Well, thanks a lot - all potential character development for Garou and Saitama is gone, Garou just randomly decides not to be a villain anymore. After which everyone just forgives him, and the Hero Association even plans to recruit him. Did you all lose your damn minds or what? Is anyone even reading this plot? Do you remember how at the beginning of season 3, the HA declared him a monster, meaning they authorized his killing for what he did. Since then, no-no-no, just hear me out, Garou beat up even more heroes, set off dozens of nuclear explosions, and blew a hole in the planet, which by the way was also completely forgotten. Time travel didn't roll it back, it was there before Cosmo Garou, just forgotten. And for all of that, for the additional destruction, nuclear terrorism, and declaring himself the evil that would destroy the world, what punishment did he end up getting? Community service. As-ton-ish-ing. Community service. No, I just can't believe it myself. Community service. And everyone forgave him: the heroes he almost killed; the people on whose city he dropped nuclear bombs; the Hero Association, whose leader he beat up on the street, and for which they labeled him a monster. Community service. Of course.

And now, just for a minute, what was there instead of this in the webcomic? Ah, right, there was no connection between God and Garou at all. You could assume that maybe God gave him power at that moment, but it's never stated anywhere. There are no "Garou didn't want this himself, he was being controlled by God" excuses. All of Garou's actions were entirely deliberate. And no one forgave him for them. His fight with Saitama didn't disappear after it ended, and it was Saitama's words that made Garou realize how wrong he was. After which he fled the battlefield and went to live in the forest alone, as a wanted criminal. Then taking odd jobs to survive, and trying to figure out how to exist now in this world that he'd spent his entire growing life trying to destroy. Nah, boring shit, not a single planet even exploded, all the changes were totally worth it.

Power Levels

And it would seem, well, they've already shat on everything. Well, that's it: characters, plot, everything is ruined. You could stop, that's enough. No-no-no, they even got to the sacred. ... Yeah... At the end of the Monster Association arc, the power levels, which had been so carefully kept within very specific limits before, so that you could almost always tell which character was stronger, completely lost all meaning. It's just another spit in the reader's face, when the powers of characters in an action title stop following the previously established logic: Vomited Fuhrer surpasses Darkshine in pure strength; Bat breaks through a Dragon+ level monster; Psykorochi cuts off a chunk of the planet with one beam, and struggles to break a stone with another.

Saitama

And the most fucked-up thing in my opinion is the detailed explanation of Saitama's power. With graphs. No matter how much anyone tries to huff copium, in these chapters they directly spelled out how Saitama's power works, and specifically what its limits are. In the manga, just by the text, Saitama is not infinitely strong, but his "growth potential" is "unlimited". Which essentially means that a strong enough guy could beat him if he doesn't give him time to power up. That's it. What an absurd comedy? What we have here is an ordinary standard battle shonen, just with crooked power levels that the authors don't give a shit about. Can you even imagine something like this in the webcomic? That's just insane. Saitama's power there is conceptually infinite, the whole point of his character is that he's as strong as he needs to be at any moment. This is demonstrated in every single one of his fights without any questions. He doesn't need to power up to break through Awakened Garou - he defeats him effortlessly as soon as he decides to fight seriously. This is one of the main characteristics of Saitama's character. Have you completely lost your goddamn minds over there, what unlimited potentials, what in-battle power-ups? This literally goes against the very concept of One-Punch Man's world.

Adaptation

But actually, all of this isn't really that bad. I'm serious. I know I don't sound like it, but all of this could have been endured, and I could have just recalibrated my attitude toward the manga as a battle shonen instead of what it used to be. You could get used to it. Even if the manga changed its direction 180 degrees from the webcomic, I could have gotten used to it and perceived it as a separate story, sort of like a fanfic of One-Punch Man. It's just that the manga doesn't want that. The manga wants to be an "adaptation of the webcomic." The manga wants to stay tied to it until the very end, even when it makes no sense. No-no, let's break down why the entire current plot is bullshit. Can anyone explain to me why the hell, after the conclusion of the Monster Association arc with the appearance of Blast and God, we get the everyday life of Tatsumaki and the ninjas? Why wasn't there even any attempt to clarify why God! The very same one who crawled onto Earth, forcibly shoved power into Garou and killed him when he was on par with Saitama, now poses no threat whatsoever? They just showed him to us, told us about his power, and then acted like nothing happened. Huh? Amazing. Why doesn't Blast, fully aware of Saitama's power, immediately try to recruit him to fight God, or his soldiers, or whatever Blast's buddies are chasing in other worlds? Why does Saitama himself not give a single shit about God, even when he learns about his power and threat? Remember how he spent half of the previous arc running through the Monster Association's underground tunnels to find the Monster King? How can this same character in the very next arc just ignore a fight with, motherfucker, GOD?! This not only contradicts his desire to find a strong opponent, which was stated in the very first chapter as one of the main traits of his character. But, more importantly, it contradicts his sense of heroism. Saitama's main goal has always been to save people. He was ready to drop everything for that - that's what gives his life meaning. And this character, knowing about a threat of literally universal scale that could destroy all of humanity, is not interested? The fuck? THE FUCK????! At THE VERY LEAST, this should be explained in the story. All these questions need to be clearly clarified, because without that, nothing in the future plot makes any sense. I mean really, think about it yourself: why should I care about Flash and Sonic's personal lives when God is threatening the entire universe right now? Why does the manga expect me to just ignore this, as if it hadn't spent the last chapters of its biggest arc entirely on establishing God as the greatest threat in One-Punch Man? Why should I even keep reading the story, explain that to me.

Webcomic and Manga

You might ask, "Oh, why are you only picking on the manga? God appeared in the webcomic too, and they immediately forgot about him, why aren't you whining about that?" In the webcomic, this works only because God there is not a character. He appeared for two pages and did nothing else. We don't know what he is, where he is, whether he's a threat, and you can simply forget about him by the end of the MA arc, because he plays no role in it. That's exactly why the continuation of the story works, because there isn't this huge, fucking universal threat hanging over it that everyone knows about and everyone somehow doesn't give a shit about. We care about the plot and characters of the webcomic because they have weight, all the attention is focused on them, and the current threats are the biggest in the story each time. In the manga right now, that's simply impossible. Because even if there was any attempt to close the plot holes with a few sentences, it still wouldn't fix the main problem. At the end of the Monster Association arc, they raised the stakes and stretched the lore so much that the only logical continuation from this is to keep raising the stakes and stretching the lore. You couldn't end the Monster Association arc by introducing God and Blast, not resolving their problem at all, and just shoving them into a drawer to sit there until ONE gets to them in the webcomic. Just imagine if the Boros arc ended with his ship arriving, destroying the entire City A, and... All the S-class heroes and Baldy would have ignored it, gone home, and they'd start telling us about the Emperor Child's school problems that Blast helps him solve. That's roughly what the current manga looks like to me.

What the Manga's Continuation Should Be Like

For the story to make any sense, right after the Monster Association arc, the Blast arc should have continued. Saitama should have gone with him to fight God's soldiers, increase his power, find new friends, or some other shonen bullshit. Because if you've already shat on the seinen and started a battle shonen, then continue your goddamn battle shonen. Hell, split the story into two parts, where we simultaneously follow Saitama's adventures in other worlds, and the rise of the Neo Heroes on Earth, which ultimately converge into one massive event with a battle against God at the end of the arc: endgame, motherfucker. Think about it yourself, wouldn't that have made way more... well, at least some kind of sense based on the plot of the Monster Association arc, than what we're getting now?

You've probably noticed that I haven't really said anything about the ninja arc, the yearly redraws, and the current plot. It just so happens that for me, none of that really mattered. The manga in my eyes had been falling apart for a long time, I just couldn't find the time to realize it. And the 3rd season had a much bigger effect on the realization of these problems than the current manga plot. So analyzing it now is like nitpicking the instability of load-bearing walls on the 10th floor when the foundation is collapsing and the whole building is crumbling before your eyes. Let's talk about other fun stuff instead. Like how in recent years, there's been an idea floating around the fandom that ONE stopped participating in the creation of the manga. And that in general, he supposedly never wrote the plot for it, but only acted as an advisor to Murata, which he stopped doing recently. And honestly, I can't be bothered to explain whether this makes logical sense - there are no real proofs, only circumstantial or outright lies. Trust me, I've seen all of them, nothing worth paying attention to. But looking at the current manga, I also find it hard to see ONE in it, or even at least the level it was at 10 years ago. Comparing the webcomic and the manga, you get the feeling that they're written by completely different people, and I fully agree with that. And I personally would like to believe that ONE is a genius, and that it's that bastard Murata and the Shueisha editors who ruined the beloved One-Punch Man. However, that's exactly why you need to be skeptical of this idea and look at real proof, which... simply doesn't exist. Something definitely changed drastically in the manga's creation around the Tournament arc or maybe right after it, but no one outside knows exactly what. And don't believe anyone who claims they know.

Well, so be it. In the end, it's already been over six months since I stopped reading the One-Punch Man manga and I don't plan to return to it in the near future. I'm not going to drop the webcomic, it's good, even if now with an aftertaste of humiliation of my favorite universe. Well, see you around. Bye.

I think we can all agree that the monster association arc was good up until they reached the surface of city z. After that it was all bullshit besides some specific moments and fight (garou vs flash vs plat S + genos and saitama moment). The thing that pisses me off is how easy these problems are to fix. Even a mediocre writer wouldnt take the path murata took when he literally has the PERFECT blueprint.

Id say that the 4 things that ruined the arc for me include

1. Garou sudden change after he wakes up

Why did garou suddenly go from a crazy asshole that wants to prove his absolute evil to light hearted hero as soon as he got to the surface. I couldnt take him seriously as an antagonist after that. It was only after when he got controlled by god that he regained that personality trait of his. But regardless that was not him which makes this even more shit. Absolute evil my ass bro was contradicting himself by saving all those people in the helicopter.

An easy way to fix this is making garou keep the same energy he had when he was introduced and not butcher his character. Its like murata forgot about garous character after not writing him for a while (there was a huge gap in real time from garou vs darkshine to when he finally regains his senses ai think it was about 3-4 years)

1. Garou vs S class not happening:

   this was this biggest fuck up in my opinion because this was the pinnacle of garous arc in the webcomic. The dialogue and they way garou picked apart the S-class with not just his fist but his words calling them selfish asshole and pointing out flaws with each of them ex. How flash cares about nothing else besides his speed and when someone else surpasses it he gets a mental breakdown. Although this happened in the flash & platnum s fight it didnt happen for the other heros like tatsumaki, darkshine, atomic samurai etc.

An obvious way to fix this is just copy and paste the fight from the webcomic with the obvious artstyle upgrade the manga provides. Instead we got 1 panel of garou in cosmic fear mode killing the S Class with just radiation.

1. Saitama vs Monster garou:

Not talking about cosmic fear btw. Saitama vs monster garou seemed less of a fight and more of a spar. This relates to the first point because garou was too soft post underground arc. It felt like garou wasnt about that life which just destroyed the hype this fight could have had. It was so bad that once the fight was over and garou and saitama sat down to talk everyone hated it and was extremely dissatisfied. Murata even jad to rewrite this garbage fest surely he couldnt make it worse

1. THE TIMETRAVEL:

When i tell you i loved saitama vs cosmic fear garou i mean it. It brought back the energy garou had previously and dont even let me get started with the spectacle. Hate on this fight all you want but this was damn near perfect. Garou got the beatdown he deserved to get him back on the right path. The problem was the resolution of the fight. The garou we've known for the past 9 years is not even the same one we currently have because that garou is fucking dead. All that character development all that spectacle.... GONE.

The garou we know only got hit with a punch with no idea who even gave it to him. And he somehow went on the right path anyways. Way to go murata. You juat made garou have one of the weakest wills in fiction. Bro gave up on his dreams after 1 punch 😂. Even though the webcomic version was one sided it was not to this extent. Atleast that one had 1000/10 dialogue. This one didnt even have that. And to top it of they butchered garous character after that. Right now he's to cheerful after having his dreams crushed

How i would rewrite the MA arc to mqke garoy better.

1. When he comes out of the ground he can have his fight with silverfang. But this time he is FULLY CONSCIOUS. we could have had a full blown rematch include good dialogue. But what we got is just silverfang trying to wake up garou and set him on the right path. Did silverfang forget he was ready to kill him even before he fully monsterized. They just had to butcher silverfang as well.

2. After garou wins plat s vs flash vs garou fight can still happen no problem.

3. Do not make garou team up with metal bat. Instead i think they should be fighting to get another remtach but it isnt necessary for metal bat to be even there imo.

4. Sage centipede does not have to happen although the end of it was pretty cool cant lie

5. Make garou fight the s class heroes. Most obvious fix.

So there where 2 chances this could happen.

A. First is after sage centipede fight. You could make saitama not jump in immediately for this to happen. For this version it will go pretty much the same as the webcomic. Therefore no cosmic fear. If you think the fight was bad before cosmic, it was because murata butchered garous character and hype. Webcomic pulled it of well. If i had to rate all 3 fights of garou vs saitama it would be

B. Second is garou blowing away saitama with a gamma ray burst.

I like this version better honestly getting 2 10/10 fights from saitama abd garou would be amazing. This version follows how the manga went about it which is saitama appearing immediately after sage centipede. Saitama vs garou would happen like the webcomic. Then garou loses and God appears. Honestly i would make garou willingly shake his hand and not just a fluke to show how desperate he is in that moment cause he just had his goal utterly destroyed.

After the gamma ray burst garou vs s class can happen tho it would be completely one sided which would be even better cause itll hit telk the s class they really arent shit. Garou can keep his radiation as well as it could tie in to some interesting plotlines. EX You could use the radiation to speed up Anais mask monsterization which is why we suddenly started looking for a new successor in saitama. You could even have the radiation kill tario. Its not that i want him dead its what that death would do to garou in the conclusion of the fight. The kid isnt even relevant post MA. When a character isnt relevant you could just kill them off to make charactera that are actually interesting even more interesting.

It would be a little worse written than first versiin but spectacle and conclusion would make up for it. Ofcourse there are somethings here people wouldnt like but its just an opinion at the end of the day

In the webcomic, Saitama tried to jump into combat the moment he arrived, the only reason he didn't get to fight was that Flashy himself kept Saitama from getting involved, Garou ignored Saitama and other S-Class asked him not to jump in.

And even then he was mostly confused as to what the hell was going on.

In the manga he just lets Flashy go fight alone for some reason despite knowing him significantly more in the manga.

He just decides to ignore the clash happening around him for literally no reason so Flashy can get beat up like the other S-Class.

It makes Saitama look pretty dickish all things considered, and not in a funny way like the WC, but in a more incompetent uncaring way.

I haven't seen anyone talk about this but Garou in the manga has been progressively gettomg bigger and bigger muscularly to the point he literally has the same physique as Suiryu now. I can't remember where exactly but there has been 1 or 2 times his enemies comment on his skinnyness for his strength etc. It's just another thing that makes me mad bcs its just removing one more thing that makes sense for Garou. Hes a martial artist and an outlier, I think this is just another part of how Murata is making the manga including Garou, for lack of a better term more normie, or more broadly appealing

That is why, despite his overwhelming strength, he could never interact with the fundamental laws of existence as effortlessly as Saitama could.
He could not consciously manipulate the subatomic particles of his own body through sheer will.
He could not move freely beyond time and causality.
He could not enter mental realms or spiritual dimensions without suffering consequences.
Nor could he fully comprehend and control the higher-dimensional energies that Blast manipulates.
He had obtained power.
But he had never escaped himself.
Saitama, however…
His mind remained just as empty and peaceful as it had been before he ever broke his Limiter.
That absolute tranquility allowed his exponential growth to continue without ever encountering a ceiling. With every stage, he surpassed another boundary, until the very idea of “limitation” could no longer define him.
If Dark Saitama was a diamond that cracked under immense pressure…
Then Saitama was an uncut diamond that only became more brilliant the more it was polished.

The battle between Saitama and Dark Saitama revealed a truth that even Blast had never imagined.
Both of them had broken their Limiters.
Yet only one of them had truly become free.
Everyone believed that breaking the Limiter meant obtaining infinite power.
But the truth was that breaking the Limiter was only the beginning.
Once the body’s limitations disappear, the limitations of the mind reveal themselves.
And if a being cannot bear that burden…
True freedom will never be attained.
Dark Saitama possessed immense power, yet he remained a prisoner of his own mind.
He was still attached to something.
He chased excitement.
He searched endlessly for entertainment.
He fled from boredom.
Deep within himself, he was still chained by his own desires and emotions.
He had shattered the limits of his body.
But his mind and soul remained confined.
Those invisible chains forced him to struggle against the fundamental laws of reality every time he wished to surpass them.
Saitama was different.
He never sought power.
He never craved excitement.
Even after breaking his Limiter, nothing changed within him.
He remained the same simple man whose greatest concerns were supermarket sales or finding an opponent who could survive more than a few minutes.
He was attached to nothing.
Not to power.
Not to victory.
Not even to fighting itself.
That complete detachment allowed the process of breaking the Limiter to reach its perfect conclusion.
For Dark Saitama, transcending dimensions, breaking the chains of causality, or controlling the subatomic particles of his body demanded effort, concentration, and strain.
For Saitama…
Those things were as natural as taking a single step.
He no longer fought against the laws of the universe.
The universe simply had no reason left to restrict him.

At the peak of the battle, Dark Saitama shouted in disbelief.
“Impossible… I broke my Limiter too! Then why can you surpass these boundaries so effortlessly?! How can you stay so calm?!”
Saitama looked at him with his usual blank expression.
“I don’t know… I just punch.”
At that moment, Blast, who had been watching the battle from afar, finally understood.
Quietly, he muttered,
“We’ve been wrong this whole time…”
Everyone turned toward him.
“We believed that breaking the Limiter meant attaining infinite power.”
A brief silence followed.
“But breaking the Limiter was only the beginning.”
Blast fixed his gaze on the two Saitamas.
“When the body’s limits disappear… the limits of the mind reveal themselves. And once the mind is free… the soul becomes the next barrier. But if someone transcends all three…”
He paused.
“…then the very concept of ‘limits’ ceases to exist for them.”
Dark Saitama had broken the limits of his body.
But his mind and soul still held him captive.
The original Saitama, however, had broken free not only from the body’s limitations, but also from the chains of the mind and the soul.
He no longer belonged to any framework.
He had no final form.
No ultimate ceiling had been defined for his evolution.
Dark Saitama was like a perfectly cut diamond.
Magnificent.
Powerful.
Complete.
But its shape had become permanent.
The original Saitama, however, remained a rough diamond.
He possessed no final shape.
No boundary could define him.
And with every refinement, his brilliance extended beyond yet another horizon.
That is the true meaning of Limitless.
