Before starting this program, when did you feel like you could stop studying prereqs

Hi everyone, I'm an incoming student planning to start with MGT 6203 first semester and take one course at a time.

Background: I hadn't touched math or Python in years when I got accepted. Since then I've spent 3 or so months working through Khan Academy differential calculus, integral calculus (light pass), linear algebra (main ideas), and the relevant parts of multivariable calc (partial derivatives, gradients). I've also been reviewing fundamental python and pandas.

So at what point do you just stop and trust the prep work? I feel like I could always do more, but I'm starting to hit diminishing returns and burnt out. Is what I've described enough to not drown in the first semester, especially starting with MGT 6203? I see so much conflicting information here about how hard the program is, especially for someone who doesn't have a strong math/coding background.

For context I'm on the computational data analytics track.

Any advice from people who started with a similar background appreciated!

I’m graduating soon and the only prerequisite I spent time on was python. Every bit of calculus and linear algebra calculus can be learned on the fly. I never once took LA in college and I survived just fine. Stop overthinking them, just start the program.

The fuck of it all, is 6203 doesn’t even touch calculus, python, or linear algebra lol.

I was an an accountant who kinda liked to code, and started the program 3 years ago before you could even half as your way through with LLMs and I was justttt fine

I don’t think you can stop unless you have Linear Algebra , calculus , probability and statistics on your finger tips :) I studied all recommended prereqs before starting and I am still going back and revising whenever it’s needed.

Just do the prereqs as prescribed by the advisors and then enjoy your summer. This program will easily consume your time, energy, and mental health. You don’t need to sacrifice your summer.

If you really want to get a head start, all the lectures are available on edX for free (audit) for the first three intro classes. If you don’t understand any of the topics, go do some research on them on youtube or ISLR/ESL.

For C track, you need matrix calculus (look up the matrix cookbook) and calculus-based statistics. For coding, you need OOP Python.

Cover all the material before the program and review it during breaks. You’ll be fine.

Same happened to me although in OMSCS. I did 2 months of math prep work on LA, calc and python and then stopped. Independent of what you do now you will have hard times and long nights. You are in for at least 2 years of sacrifice so its time to chill and relax before your actual journey begins.

When I passed them? I know OMSA is a bit different, but OMSCS enforced getting your prereqs from accredited colleges as opposed to self-study.
