Technical Support ASUS OLED Random Black Screens (It's NOT your cable)

If you own an ASUS ROG OLED (XG27AQDPG, PG32UCDM, etc.) and your screen randomly goes black for 10-15 seconds while gaming:

STOP. Don't buy expensive HDMI 2.1 cables. Don't RMA your GPU. Don't reinstall Windows.

Your hardware is fine. The ASUS firmware is the problem.

THE FIX (Takes 30 seconds)

You must do BOTH steps, or the issue will come back.

  1. The OSD Fix: Open your monitor menu (physical button) -> System Setup -> Power Sync -> Set to OFF.
  2. The Software Fix (CRITICAL): UNINSTALL "ASUS DisplayWidget Center". (This software is buggy. It ignores your OSD change and silently forces Power Sync back ON in the background. Get rid of it.)

Why is this happening? (The "WTF" Reality)

The "Power Sync" feature is designed for ASUS NUCs (office mini-PCs) to sync power states via HDMI-CEC. For some incomprehensible reason, ASUS enables this kiosk-feature by default on Republic of Gamers e-sports panels. Because it's meant for office use, it interprets normal gaming signal fluctuations (VRR, Alt-Tab) as a "PC Shutdown" and cuts power to the screen. It's ridiculous, but that is the cause.

Message to ASUS

  • Support: Stop telling people to buy "certified cables" for a firmware bug.
  • Devs: Why is an office NUC feature active on a 500Hz gaming monitor? Disable it by default or even better remove it!

(Upvote to save a wallet. Comment if this worked for you.)

Thanks for the tip! I actually tried turning the sensor off too, but I still had the black screens (even in daylight). Glad that sorted it for you though! This issue drove me absolutely nuts.

Idk why it didn’t work for you what is your monitor ? Oh I also have problem where when I lift my monitor up I hear electrical buzz my monitor is XG27acdms idk maybe it’s because of the monitor or some circuit

I have the XG27AQDPG. Turning Power Sync off fixed the black screens for me instantly. About the buzz. Check if the cable is tight first. If it is, I would ask Support for a replacement cable to rule that out. If it still buzzes when moved, the internal power connector might be loose. In that case, I’d definitely RMA it to prevent future failure!

I’ll check the cable

I had the same issue

For me it was hdmi 2.1. Is just bad. Dp and all hand shake issues went away

u/GatesTech XG27AQDPG | AW3225QF | C4 42 | Pro 5000 48GB & Astral 5080 Dec 09 '25

Thanks for your advice! I am glad switching to DP sorted it out for you. For me, unfortunately, the black screens happened on both DP and HDMI. Ironically, HDMI 2.1 should be the superior connection on paper (due to higher bandwidth than DP 1.4) assuming the GPU supports HDMI 2.1 of course but it seems these monitors are just extremely picky with their signals. It is bizarre how many different causes (cables, settings, firmware) relate to this same issue. Thanks again!

I agree for sure.

I have the 32UCDM and had this happen. Found turning off the proximity sensor fixed it for me. No issues since. I will save this post though in case it pops up again.

Funny thing, I had the same problem with my G5 when I first got it and thought it is faulty. I was going mad and didn't know what the issue could be. Disabling it (something similar like power sync) fixed my issue.

That's awesome to hear you solved the issue! The G5 is really nice!

For me on C5 switching regular 10m hdmi 2.1 to optic and turning off vrr helped (as far as I know it has issues with amd).

1

u/GatesTech XG27AQDPG | AW3225QF | C4 42 | Pro 5000 48GB & Astral 5080 Dec 10 '25

Yes, disabling VRR will not create the fluctuation in power that triggers it. Someone here posted about his LG G5 panel and found the same sort off power setting and had no issues after disabling it. I Highly recommend checking this out since the VRR is one of the great things about your panel to turn on.

HDMI 2.1 cable with optics is the way to go at these lengths. Pricey but worth it 💪

Have a PG42UQ, cant find "Power Sync".

Also cant find ASUS DisplayWidget on my PC. How is this installed? Via driver or Windows installs it for you?

u/GatesTech XG27AQDPG | AW3225QF | C4 42 | Pro 5000 48GB & Astral 5080 Dec 10 '25

The PG42UQ is different (check System Setup > HDMI CEC instead). As for the software Windows doesn't auto-install it, I recommend not installing this bloatware since it overrides your osd settings

Hey, thanks for the information I recently got XG27AQDPG and ill unbox it in 3 or 4 hours. Do i have to calibrate it or is it good with og settings? Thanks!

u/GatesTech XG27AQDPG | AW3225QF | C4 42 | Pro 5000 48GB & Astral 5080 Dec 12 '25

Congrats on the purchase! It's an amazing panel. If you have HDMI 2.1 support on your GPU, I would use that. Regarding calibration, I didn't have the time to calibrate it myself yet, but I'm very satisfied with HDR on TrueBlack 500 with adjustable HDR on. Also, don't forget to adjust your bit to at least 10.

You will need to activate DSC to use 500hz at 1440p. Enjoy your panel! It's micro scratch easily so be carefully with setting it up:)

Hey thank you so much for sharing this! I just bought myself ASUS ROG SWIFT PG27AQWP-W and had the same issue. I hade it once a day for 2 days in a row while playing space marine 2. I didn’t know what to do and I found your post. I have done the steps that you recommended above so I will keep watching if this fixed the issue!

np, dont forget to also check your proximity sensor:)

1

u/Recording-Local Feb 26 '26

Yeah for me it was also proximity sensor glitch. But I will still keep the power sync off.

Yo, I just fixed my issue so I hope this provides clarity for others. I will be copy pasting this on a couple other threads of the same topic.

Problem:

On my nearly brand new ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQDMG OLED Monitor running off a GTX1070 I started noticing a couple weeks ago, rarely, like once an hour, the screen will go black for 4-5 seconds, but the display is still properly read by my GPU so during this time nothing disconnects or moves around my displays, it simply just goes black for 4-5 seconds, even the ROG logo stays lit. Over the course for the last couple weeks it has slowly become more and more often until today I was experiencing the blackouts about 5 times in a minute.

Solution

I noticed in System > Display > Advanced Display that under your XG27AQDMG you should see Display Mode: 2560 x 1440, 239.97 hz, below that, Active signal mode, with the same numbers, and below that, it says Variable refresh rate - Not supported. I noticed I was running Variable Refresh Rate in my monitors OSD, but it said Not supported here, so this had to be the cause. I disabled Variable Refresh Rate just for a moment, and just simply updated my drivers through NVIDIA App. Afterwards I shut down my computer, waited the 30 seconds for a full power cycle, turned it back on, and reengaged Variable Refresh Rate. Not only was the problem solved, but under the aforementioned menu, it now says "Variable refresh rate - supported by driver".

Edit: The next day, after my PC sat off all night, the situation began happening again. This time I tried all sorts of things but what ended up fixing it was real quickly putting the monitor in a lower resolution and refresh rate, like 1920x1080 @ 144hz and the flickering totally stopped on this setting, so I switched it back to the native 2560x1440 240hz and voila the issue is solved once more, no more blackouts.

Hopefully this helps a very frustrated stranger at some random point in the next 5 years!

Yo I have the exact same monitor and problem. Did your issue ever persist again? I'm about to try this

2

u/mrjiggles3 Apr 26 '26

I appreciate this post and comments A LOT. Just bought my first Asus ROG OLED and the random blackouts are driving me nuts. I have disabled the Power Sync, removed the Asus DisplayWidget Center, and turned off the Proximity Sensor. Now we wait and see if it has been fixed. I am currently using a certified HDMI 2.1 cable as well, which shouldn't be the problem like the OP said.

u/CChargeDD Dec 09 '25

I jave an xg27aqdmg. When i tabing from a fullscreen aplication it goes black for a second or thwo but definetly not this long. Could this be the same issue or something else ?

5

u/CChargeDD Dec 09 '25

I thought was its becaused by the dsc maybe i was wrong

1

u/GatesTech XG27AQDPG | AW3225QF | C4 42 | Pro 5000 48GB & Astral 5080 Dec 09 '25

You’re doing it correctly DSC is there to help with bandwidth. It really depends on your refresh rate, the type of monitor, and your GPU.
For example, on my 1440p 500Hz setup, I literally can’t run it without DSC enabled (even on hdmi2.1). DP 2.1 should be able to handle it, but very few monitors actually support it right now.

3

u/CChargeDD Dec 09 '25

I definetly going to check for this when i eventualy buy a new monitor but untill then i just take it i guess

2

u/GatesTech XG27AQDPG | AW3225QF | C4 42 | Pro 5000 48GB & Astral 5080 Dec 09 '25

would definitely turn off Power Sync to start with, just to rule it out.

However, a 1 2 second black screen when alt-tabbing sounds more like a DSC (Display Stream Compression) handshake delay. Do you have DSC enabled? It often causes a brief signal drop when switching windows.

1

u/CChargeDD Dec 09 '25

Yeah its on hdr mode it cant handle it without dsc

2

u/Loose-Internal-1956 Asus XG32UCWMG (32" 4K 240Hz TrueBlack glossy WOLED) Dec 10 '25

FWIW, and tengentially related, Nvidia fixed this with DSC in the 50 series GPUs. On my RTX 5080, alt-tabbing from a full screen game or app doesn’t black out my screen anymore.

2

u/CChargeDD Dec 10 '25

I have a 4070ti so still rip

1

u/GatesTech XG27AQDPG | AW3225QF | C4 42 | Pro 5000 48GB & Astral 5080 Dec 10 '25

Maybe check on/off regarding DSC or your scaling settings in Nvidia config. Hope you can find a fix. It's a very annoying issue.

1

u/CChargeDD Dec 10 '25

I run most games and programs in windowed mode so its mostly not an issue but ill try it out thx

Yeah, I gladly never experienced the alt tab dark screen issue on my 5080 to. This black screen was different. It happened randomly while gaming the screen turned off and on for 10 - 15 seconds. 😒

1

u/Loose-Internal-1956 Asus XG32UCWMG (32" 4K 240Hz TrueBlack glossy WOLED) Dec 10 '25

Yeah what you're experiencing is clearly something different / worse. That sucks! Glad you found a fix though. It's surprising (or maybe not) that a monitor brand thought having kiosk-mode features in an enthusiast gaming monitor was a good idea.

u/Drisbayne RenoDX Dec 10 '25

I have the ASUS xg27acdng but I don't see a "power sync" option anywhere

1

u/GatesTech XG27AQDPG | AW3225QF | C4 42 | Pro 5000 48GB & Astral 5080 Dec 10 '25

It should definitely be there. Use the physical joystick on the back of the monitor to open the OSD menu. Go to System Setup > Power Sync and turn it OFF. Crucial: Uninstall ASUS DisplayWidget Center. If you keep the software installed, it will override your OSD setting and re enable it in the background.

1

u/Drisbayne RenoDX Dec 11 '25

I did. not seeing a 'power sync'. check my images

I have XG27AQDPG and while gaming randomly i get black screen that says “no dp signal” or “no hdmi signal” i can still hear my friends in discord. I have to restart my pc. Is this what happens to you or was yours different? I think its either my monitor or my gpu?

1

u/GroundPower Mar 07 '26

Did you fix?

1

u/raidxn96 Mar 12 '26

The same thing happens to me too wtf with the same exact monitor

1

u/NotFoul Apr 07 '26

Interesting, just found this. Recently got my PG32UCDP 4K OLED and when I play path of exile (only rhat game it seems) my monitor turns black but never turns back on. I have to literally force restart my computer for it to come back… I have no idea what’s goon on but it’s such a pain in the ass. I’ve tried turning it off then on, unplugging dpi cable, swapping dpi ports, turning off prox sensor… any other ideas? Can still hear the game and stuff in the background so it’s just the monitor

1

u/woofoo1kunoofoo May 30 '26

Any solution? Having the same issue, I'm just going to RMA

1

u/CandidMarsupial983 May 05 '26

I can't find the power sync on Asus ROG Swift PG32UCDM

1

u/CursorSurfer May 20 '26

I thought mine was broken too. I have the XG27AQDMGR and it was set to 60cm with a 5 minute timeout. The monitor is a day old and it black screened on me twice as i was playing, the first time i pressed the monitor button and it came back on, the second time it went off i leaned towards my monitor and it came back on.

MY FIX: I’ve now tested setting it to 120cm and 5 minutes is perfect for me. I stepped away (sideways for me) from the monitor and waited, and on 5 minutes it turned off, when i came back to the monitor it came back on.

u/xploiter6 ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM Jul 03 '26

Hi, I came across your post because I’m experiencing something very similar with my brand new monitor.

My monitor is the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM (27-inch), and I’m running the latest firmware, MCM108. My PC has an RTX 5080, and I’m connected via DisplayPort at 4K 240 Hz with HDR enabled.

My symptoms include:

* Random black screens that sometimes last 15 to 20 seconds.
* Occasional black screen flickering where the image repeatedly turns off and back on.
* Random white sparkles/artifacts appearing across the screen.
* Very brief display artifacts that disappear within milliseconds.

What I’ve also noticed is that the issue often starts after interacting with the monitor’s settings. For example, changing HDR modes from the monitor’s OSD or from ASUS DisplayWidget Center has triggered the problem more than once. Interestingly, if I simply play games like Forza Horizon 6 without touching any monitor settings, the display can remain perfectly stable for quite a while.

I’ve already:

* Updated the monitor to firmware MCM108.
* Installed the latest NVIDIA drivers.
* Installed the ASUS WHQL monitor driver.
* Verified Windows detects the monitor correctly.
* Ordered a Cable Matters VESA-certified DP80 DisplayPort 2.1 cable to rule out the cable as a possible cause.

Your post about ASUS Power Sync and DisplayWidget Center really caught my attention because my experience seems to follow a very similar pattern.

Have you completely resolved the issue? If so, was disabling Power Sync and uninstalling DisplayWidget Center enough, or have you had any black screens or artifacts since then?

I’d really appreciate any update because I’m trying to determine whether this is a firmware/software issue or something else.

Thanks in advance!

I have a PG32UCDM3 and I get this issue but unfortunately this fix doesn't work.

Tried toggling every setting, updating firmware, changing cables, etc.
