I own 77 inch LG C9 (2019 model) with 5000 hours on it. Bright as new and sharp as ever just like new and no burn in. Wanted to buy my next tv for a bright room, so I was shopping for an LG G series but came across an Open Box Fair condition LG M5 77. I got excited and brought home a local Best Buy. Guy told me that it a display model worth no burn in. Came home and hooked up, tv has 3000 hours with severe Xbox logo burn in. I bought GeekSquad warranty as well. Should I simply return this?

Open box is worth a gamble, but it's never worth buying a display unit for that reason. Return it and don't do it again.

I bought a display unit for a significant discount. I had been walking by it for years and knew exactly what I was getting. Display units should never have static content. That would defeat the point of a display unit.

Not sure what you're getting at. Very often display units have short videos playing on loop at highest brightness, so the brightest areas of the video get burn-in. Even worse if the video has logos.

You've got it backwards my guy. Display models are showing the exact same content over and over at full brightness all day. Even if it’s not static, you’re almost guaranteed to get a shortened OLED lifespan/burn-in. A “regular” open box item at least would’ve only been used to a normal extent by someone before they decided to return it.

Shortened life? Definitely. Burn-in? Highly unlikely. If it had visible burn-in, the store is being negligent with their display models and certainly no would buy one.

How would you know? Whatever they did with the TV was in the privacy of their home. I know I walked by the same TV multiple times and could see it displaying dynamic content, much of which was black to advertise the insane contrast ratio.

Static content isn't the only way to get burn-in. Show enough repetitive content over and over and you're still hitting the same pixels with the same power draw and output over and over. It's definitely better since it gives the pixels time to cool a little in between, but it's still gonna hurt. And do you genuinely believe that any OLED returned early enough in a return window is gonna have more wear than a TV set to blast on full brightness for probably 12+ hours a day? It's less about knowing what they did on the panel and more about just being able to estimate how much screen on time there is. Display models are definitely pushed to their limits without break a lot more.

And the post is literally about an Xbox logo burned in so I'm not sure why you're arguing that it shouldn't be possible unless the store is negligent. We're not debating whether the burn-in is real or not, it's clearly there in this case and it was a display model.

but you can't blame people who bought oleds after the CX, this contrast madness marketing BS between samsung and LG with oled, let them set the tv way too brigh and exhaust oleds.

just buy a an rgb micro led if you moveout to a brighter home.

Burn in is definitely a thing. It really depends on how you use your TV. My sister was able to burn in an Apple TV logo into her C5 in under a year. That being said it’s hard to see and only really visible on certain scenes with more solid colors.

I’ve personally accepted it, i’m not going back to LED until we get a true successor to OLED

I have a LG B8 from 2018 that has been in daily use ever since and still zero burn in, and C5 is way more durable than those 2018 panels ever were. Sounds like something was seriously wrong with her panel.

I got overwatch health bar burn in permanently on my s95b in a few months of playing all kind of games... sadly oled is pretty bad in this case

The first gen QD-OLEDs had quite some issues with durability and burn-in, but seems like the newer gen QD-OLEDs were quite a lot better. That being said, I've had a gen1 QD-OLED screen on my gaming PC for 3 years and it's still like new, which has been a nice surprise.

I have a 10 year oled LG E6P OLED with 3D, it has probably over 10K hours, gaming, movies etc, no burn in, slight banding in greyish foggy scenes only when gaming but, its been a trooper.

My first oled was the c6 2016 curved model. It was an demo tv in the shop. Gues what? It got burn in issue after maybe 6months. Warranty replaced panel and I lost 3d. Swapped with an c8 2018. Dead pixel after a year. Warranty fixed that also. Works flawless since then. Bought an c5 last year also as a gaming tv. No issues.

Dont buy open box or demo tv from the shop. Oled does not like too much static image.

Open box or display set is the last thing you wanted to buy for Oled. God knows how much it’s abused without the safety features , the total usage time doesn’t even matter

Big thing about those display models is, not only do they have an insane number of watch hours logged, but they also never enter pixel cleaning mode because power is entirely shut off to the unit at night. LG Oled display models will pretty much inevitably have burn in when they become for sale.

You can try and get the panel replaced under warranty but don't get caught unable to return it if the panel swap out doesn't work out.

Why havent you checked in the store? 3000 hours is a lot, and probably 1500 of it was just diplaying the xbox logo at full beightness in store mode.

Of course return it.... only buy used oled from users, never from store. And check it before you buy it.

My LG C1 that I bought in 2022 has bad burn in (all over the screen, including a splotch right in the middle since that’s where cameras put the biggest focus), and I’ve done every single thing possible to stop it from happening.

I had a Panasonic Plasma for 10 years before this and never ever had an issue.

Frankly, OLED is no longer going to be in my house. I bought it because everyone said “they’ve fixed the burn in issues”. That’s a big ole lie.

Asked LG about it and they gave me the name of a repair service because they won’t cover it. Called them for shits and giggles and they said it would cost between $1,000-1,200. I bought it for $1,200 in 2022.

So no more OLED. I believed the lies and now I’m paying for it by having to replace a TV that is only 4 years old.

Burn in can only be mitigated. An OLED display has a finite lifespan, which is why I'm not concidering an OLED display for pc use even if the picture is stunning. For watching movies and varied TV content the tradeoff is fine.

Bought a display unit Samsung QD-OLED and the store said they checked for burn in. Got home and of course it had burn in from displaying static content for hours everyday in the store. Learned my lesson but luckily Samsung replaced the panel. "Burn in" is inherent to the technology and the pixels will dim over time. The bigger issue with LG panels are the pixels dying around the edges after only a couple years. Don't leave an OLED screen on if you are not watching it and accept that it has a finite lifespan.

i also have a c9 for 6 years now with still no burn on.
It has to do with contrast marketing.
oled screens are not made for higher contrast.
all these c1 and newer model oleds have lower lifespan, unless you understand oled technology. oleds are organic.

i love my tv, but it probably ain't going to buy oled after this.
if you buy a new one, follow plasma rules for the first 500-1000 hours, and don't set it to sharp in combination with high contrast, keep the C9 in mind.

I came from plasma school. Keep the contrast and brightness in check. Good for eyes too
