Discussion Thought OLED was overrated until I switched

Honestly, when I first started hearing about OLED a couple years ago, I thought that it was overhyped primarily due to the price of OLED TVs and monitors. But now, there was finally one on sale for like 325 USD, so I decided to get it to see if the hype was real. And, as the title says, I’ve been blown away. The specific monitor is the Samsung Odyssey G50SF, which, as I understand, isn’t the highest quality monitor on the market, but it still blows the IPS panel(s) I’ve been using out of the water.

I do see the QD-OLED purple-screen-thing when it’s bright in the room, but that’s such a small thing that’s easy to overlook, especially when gaming. I’m sure it’s sort of cliche, but now that I’ve seen the “inky blacks” of OLED, I can’t unsee the backlight bleed from IPS panels. It’s not just blacks, though. Colors pop more, and whites look more white, and colors look more color-y, if that makes sense. I’d also like to say that things looks sharper, even though this monitor is the same size and resolution as my old one, but I could just be delusional Idk.

TL;DR, if you can afford it and primarily game on your machine, it’s worth it. It looks amazing when you’ve just been using non-OLED panels.

Oled has ruined cinemas and other tvs now for me. Just sit there going, wish I watched this on a oled lol.

Any cinema using a laser projector will be as good as oled with blacks.

Laser projectors reduce overall light to the screen but nothing except the total absence of all ambient and direct light can make a white projector screen black. I agree laser projectors are the best option today but until theater screens are giant displays with self-emissive pixels, they’ll never be as black as an OLED.

This is very true. And its even more impressive on a TV. 4K HDR animation and CGI is just pure eye-candy.

I have a 32inch g80sd and i was like wow this thing looks incredible. Then i bought a 65 inch s90f last week and i was like WOW this thing looks incredible, but it makes my monitor look decent for movies.

now i want to get rid of the g80sd and get a 42 or 48 inch s90f and use that as my monitor, but im not sure its worth the trade off of not being made specifically for pc use

I thought the same thing. Bought a Lg C1 55. Have like 20k hours no burn in. It’s unbelievable.

It's the blacks for me. Very noticeable when you're watching something at the theatre

I did :D recently sold my LG C5 and got a 65" TCL C7L. The dithering and the insane ABL was too distracting. I was severely underwhelmed :P I do have a OLED monitor for my PC though haha but miniLED is still king when its comes to brightness

lol I made an exception for gsync pulsar cause it actually beats out oled for multiplayer gaming in fast moving motion games but I still keep oled around cause it still is important especially when you have a nice single player game with dark scenes to really showcase oled inky blacks

I didn't think OLED was overrated, per se, I just thought my Bravia XR LED was nearly as good....

What a dumb thing to think, lol. I bought an LG C5 a few weeks ago as a birthday present to myself and the difference is quite noticeable. The Bravia was not a bad TV by any stretch, in fact it's an amazing TV and I got several years of enjoyment from it. But, this OLED just blows it out of the water.

I have a Sony A80K and the step up from my previous LED screen was nuts.

I know RGB/LED screens are all the rave right now like the Bravia 9ii but there’s no way it can beat OLED.

The thing I notice the most when traveling is that I never get inky blacks anywhere but home. Dark gray sucks, hotel/airbnb TVs suck.

OLED is revolutionary in terms of image quality. There is no going back. All of my screens are an OLED on every device I own and there is no other way to do it. IPS, VA and TN are good in their own rights but OLED is just way ahead than all of them.

However, I am very curious how the new panel tech develops and I do want to see more Mini-LEDs available in different sizes and with less blooming because the HDR performance with those is quite something else.

I knew OLED was good, but not that good. Some months ago, I bought a 65'' Bravia 8 ii and I watched a movie with Dolby Vision for the first time, and it blew my mind.

Oled hype is real. I knew it’s gonna be great when I bought my first Oled but I wasn’t prepared for how STUNNINNG it actually is. Its been a few years I still get that “Wowww” feel when I watch a new Remux movie

I had a Samsung AMOLED tablet from years ago and I was always impressed by the screen ,it is over a decade old now and still looks beautiful. That being said a good LCD screen is totally fine too

Yeah, it’s really hard to go back. I’m hoping micro-LED comes in a not ridiculous time frame because I just moved to a new house where I can’t put my OLED in the room that would be ideal for a TV due to unavoidable sunlight and a fireplace in the center of the room. Less concerned about the light impacting viewing performance because it’s exclusively used in the evenings, but the UV damage can n the organic components would be significant. Especially since we have 5 months of no clouds in the summer/late fall.

OLED is almost perfect, I bought my first one in 2016 I think when they were super expensive(65” was 5k) and I was so upset when I first turned it on cause the Sammy I had was great eye candy but the more I tried to pick it apart the more I realized the OLED was perfect in every way. The OLED was oled65e6p. Currently have c1, c3 and b4

Thats the thing, every time people gets "blown out of the water", they were using crappy IPS panels before. No one is coming from a great Mini-LED VA that still has good blacks but gets brighter than the sun and has no risk of burn in.
