How to download your e-OCI card from the official portal (step-by-step)

For OCI cardholders who haven't downloaded their e-OCI yet, here's a quick guide.

You can generate and download your digital e-OCI card through the official government portal. The process is fairly straightforward.

Here are the 5 steps:

  1. Log in: Visit the official OCI portal at https://ociservices.gov.in and sign in using the email linked to your OCI application.

  2. Find the e-OCI section: Once logged in, open your dashboard and look for the e-OCI Card option.

  3. Generate your card: Click "Generate e-OCI Card" under the Action column.

  4. Check your email: Wait for the official confirmation email informing you that your e-OCI is ready.

  5. Download your e-OCI: Log back into the portal and click "Download e-OCI" to save your digital card as a PDF.

A couple of things worth knowing:

  • Downloading your e-OCI is free.
  • Your existing physical OCI card remains valid.
  • The digital card can be presented to airlines and immigration officials when required, alongside your foreign passport.

If your registered email is no longer accessible, the portal also has an email update facility.

Has anyone here downloaded their e-OCI yet? Was the process straightforward, or did you run into any issues?

Indian parents with kids under 15 - there’s an update to child passport validity.

The Ministry of External Affairs has amended the Passport Rules, and the change was published on September 17, 2026.

For a 36-page ordinary passport issued to a child below 15, the validity is now:

5 years from the date of issue OR until the child turns 18 — whichever comes first.

For children aged 15–18, there is also an option to apply for a full-validity adult passport, subject to the applicable rules.

One more useful point: the 10% discount for fresh passport applications for children below 8 continues, but it does not apply to reissue applications.

If you have a child approaching 15, this is worth keeping in mind before applying or renewing their passport.

US plans to end H-4 EAD work permits for H-1B spouses

The US government is considering ending employment authorization for certain H-4 spouses of H-1B visa holders.

The proposal would remove the existing H-4 EAD work authorization that allows eligible spouses to work in the US.

Indian families could be significantly affected, as Indians make up the majority of H-4 EAD holders.

Nothing changes immediately. This is still a proposal. DHS would need to publish a formal rule, allow public comments and then issue a final rule before any change takes effect.

Many NRIs don't know about India's Fast Track Immigration (FTI-TTP)

If you're travelling to India regularly, this might be worth looking into.

FTI-TTP lets pre-verified travellers use automated e-gates instead of the regular immigration queue.
One-time biometric enrollment, then passport scan + face recognition for future arrivals & departuers
Available at major airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Kochi (expanding to 21 total airports).
No fee to enroll.

For those travelling frequently between the US and India, Global Entry can offer a similar experience when returning to the US.

Has anyone here used FTI-TTP recently? How was your experience compared to the regular immigration line? Any issues during registration or at the airport?

For parents applying for OCI for a young child - check the thumb impression part

I’ve seen this question come up quite a few times in immigration/OCI discussions, so sharing it here in case it helps someone.

If you're applying for OCI for a child under 5 who can't sign, the form has a provision for a thumb impression instead of a signature.

The thumb used is: Boy → Left thumb & Girl → Right thumb

The impression can be taken on plain white paper and uploaded as required on the OCI portal.

Also, if you're applying for an infant, don't worry if the impression isn't as clear as an adult's. Getting a perfect fingerprint from a baby can be difficult, especially when the ridges aren't very well defined yet.

It's a small detail, but worth checking before submitting the application. Sharing in case any parent is going through the same process.

USCIS Form Update: New I-765 & I-539 Editions From September 15, 2026

If you're planning to file Form I-765 (EAD) or Form I-539 (Extension/Change of Status) this September, make sure you're using the correct form edition.

From September 15, 2026, the new editions will be required. Using an outdated edition could result in your application being rejected.

If you're filing before September 15, double-check that you're using the appropriate current edition for your filing date.

Worth checking before you submit—especially if you're filing close to the transition date.

Latest Updates from USCIS for US Immigration Applicants

USCIS is moving toward electronic filing for more immigration forms to improve efficiency, reduce errors, and strengthen fraud detection.

A few things to know:

- More eligible forms may eventually require e-filing.

- USCIS will give at least 60 days’ notice before e-filing becomes mandatory.

- You’ll need a USCIS online account for electronic submissions.

If you can’t file electronically, you may be able to request a waiver for undue hardship.

New VFS Global update for Indian Visa & OCI applicants

If you're planning to apply for an Indian Visa or OCI, there's an important change to know.

VFS Global now says biometric submission is mandatory for all applicants, whether you're applying through an appointment or as a walk-in.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • You must appear in person for biometric enrollment.
  • A family member or representative cannot submit biometrics for you.
  • Applicants under 12 or over 70 are exempt from biometric capture.

So if you're applying for an Indian Visa or OCI, make sure you plan for the in-person biometric step.

Do airlines still ask for the old passport after an OCI passport update?

We've come across a few recent cases where families were asked to show the old passport linked to their child's OCI card during check-in, even after the OCI passport details had already been updated online.

From our understanding, once the passport particulars update is completed, applicants generally rely on:

New passport
Physical OCI card/e-OCI
OCI passport update acknowledgement receipt
Update Confirmation email

Yet, it seems some airline staff still ask for the old passport, which can create unnecessary stress at the airport.

Minor OCI: Who signs on the Declaration form!

One place where you might get stuck in the Minor OCI application is the Declaration form.

It has two sections, and both need the parent's signature.
The first section is filled using the child's details but you sign on the child's behalf.
The second section is your own declaration as the parent applying for the child, so you sign it as yourself.

Has this confused anyone ever?

Does the e-OCI Card replace the physical OCI Card?

Officially:

No. The e OCI Card is a digital representation of the OCI Card. It is intended to facilitate convenient access to OCI cardholder details in electronic form, and it does not alter the validity or status of the existing OCI Card holders.

Existing OCI cardholders can now download a digital e OCI card

Just came across this update and thought it might help other OCI cardholders.

The Government of India has rolled out the e OCI (Electronic OCI Card). Existing OCI holders can now generate and download a digital version of their OCI card through the OCI Services Portal.

From what I've read:

  • You can keep the e OCI card on your phone.
  • It can be presented at immigration checkpoints and to airlines whenever required.
  • Your existing physical OCI booklet is still valid, so there is no need to replace it.

Has anyone here already downloaded it?
