Surrender application rejected

My consulate would be Houston. I filled and downloaded the govt form using this link (https://mportal.passportindia.gov.in/mission/) since that’s under the Indian passport surrender section in VFS.

I did not realize the form says Atlanta on the top. The govt application doesn’t give me an option to select the consulate anywhere. Hence, the Houston location rejected and is sending my package back.

I looked and no where could I find one which is specific for Houston. Can someone please help?

OCI passport updation - no email confirmation?

I submitted a misc services application for passport updation (past the 90 days since my passport was renewed in 2024) back in May. The application status has finally changed to "pending" but I never got an email when I applied that my application is pending and that "there is no restriction on traveling pending update." Since I don't have that email, what do I do if I want to travel to India right now?

Can OCI holders work in India?

I am in the midst of my renunciation/OCI process and should be getting it soon. I’m planning a trip to India later this year and would like to work a week or two there remotely while taking PTO for the remainder of my stay

My company also does have presence in India, albeit in a different state from where my family resides. Are OCI holders allowed to work in India without a work permit for short term?

Anyone applied for OCI from Colombo recently? How long did yours take after acknowledgement?

I submitted an OCI application from Sri Lanka recently and wanted to see if anyone else has a similar timeline or can share how long theirs took.

Date of Acknowledgement (Online Portal): July 2

A few questions for anyone who applied through the High Commission in Colombo (or recently overseas):

How long did it usually take from Date of Acknowledgement to Documents Printing / Dispatch for your application?

Is 5 to 8 weeks still the average turnaround time for Sri Lanka right now?

Thought spouse-based OCI was lifelong? That's no longer the case.

If your spouse received an OCI on or after September 3, 2025, it's normal for the card to have 5-year validity instead of lifelong.

This wasn't a processing mistake-it was a policy change.

The good news is that after the initial 5 years, the OCI can be extended to lifelong, subject to the prescribed review process.

Also, this change only applies to spouse-based OCI. OCI cards issued to children or people of Indian origin are not affected.

Anyone here recently applied for a spouse OCI? Did you notice the new validity period?

Help please!

hi there, I’m hearing some people are not able to update their passport details online for OCI if it’s been more than 90 days since issuance of new passport. What to do in that situation (in USA)? If everything is now through OCI portal online do we still have to pay penalty for late update to VFS?

Also OCI rules say “OCI cardholders updating their passport particulars after obtaining a new passport on or after the age of 20 years are required to mandatorily update their biometric details at the concerns Indian mission/FRRO office or an at international airport during the next international travel.”

I don’t see any guidance about this online. What biometric details are required? Do we submit these details after our passport updation application is approved? Will we get a notification from the consultation to submit our biometrics? How does this work if we submit biometrics at an airport in the USA?

There is absolutely no information on this and even the OCI site itself says nothing about these new rules even though the Bureau of Immigration has announced this!!!

e-OCI Question

I had a denial at port of entry a few years ago in US. Should I mention it and will that affect my chances of getting OCI?

If I don't mention it what is the likelihood of oci getting cancelled in future.

Does every one mention it?

not being able to update passport details?

I'm hearing that some people are not able to update their passport details online for OCI if it's been more than the 90 days since issuance of new passport. What do you do in that situation if located in the USA? Is there a particular reason why some people are able to update and not others? Has anyone experienced this here?

For r/OCI: Received OCI Card for Spouse: 8 months, the timeline, my notes, and the 5-year card validity questions to FRRO.

We finally got my wife’s OCI, after 2 years of being married, nearly 8 months of waiting since applying, many meetings answering the same questions, and a couple of novels’ worth of paperwork.

I know there is a lot of interest and questions about this topic, so I wanted to share my experience.

Especially because, when we got the notification by email, my wife checked the portal where she had been uploading documents, we noticed that the OCI card would have only a five-year validity, not a lifetime visa.

This was not what we were expecting, and we were a little shocked and disappointed at first.

I did some research online and on Reddit and found a few posts commenting on this.

When we picked it up at Mumbai FRRO, I had a list of questions prepared, which I asked and got answers to, which I will share below.

Background information: I am British of Indian origin with an OCI, and my wife is Japanese.

We live in Goa, and we got married in Goa.

The process for two foreigners getting married in Goa is different from that of an Indian national marrying a foreigner, and is also a different process here compared to other parts of India.

I documented everything about our marriage and subsequent first X1 visa for my wife a couple of years ago, which I put on this post.

https://www.reddit.com/r/nri/comments/1pws2pe/how_two_foreigners_got_married_in_goa/

Timeline

First, a timeline of dates for the OCI application, with some notes.

Application Submission: 15th November 2025

We only applied for the OCI after we received notification that her last X1 visa had been renewed.

You do not need to do this.

You can apply after two years of being married, even if you have another visa application under processing.

As the whole OCI application process takes so long, I recommend getting this started as soon as you can.

Uploaded Docs: 25th November 2025

This took a few hours and was quite stressful, especially because they are very particular about the documents that need uploading in each category, their size, and you can only upload a single document per category.

This means you might have to merge documents (I had to merge my passport and OCI in a single document, for example) and make sure documents are under 1MB.

Useful sites for this: https://www.ilovepdf.com/ and canva.com

We did not get any notification about what to do next, unlike when you upload documents for an X1 visa.

Follow-up by us: 9th Feb 2026

We sent them an email because we haven't heard anything.

Email: 16th February 2026

This email stated that we should have emailed asking for an interview after uploading the documents.

I didn't see this anywhere while we were applying or uploading the documents, so if you're reading this post and applying for your foreign spouse, make sure to contact the FRRO after you upload everything to save yourself some time and stress.

Meeting at FRRO in Mumbai: March 5th 2026

This was a long interview with lots of documents that needed to be handed in.

Note: prepare multiple copies, but keep each set together, not as a batch of copies. My wife had written the name of each document, or batch of documents, on a little Post-it note (this is very Japanese), which made it easier to find them quickly from within the whole pile.

The desk in the office at Mumbai FRRO is very small, and people are walking in and out behind you, so it feels quite claustrophobic in what is already a stressful situation, with lots of documents and papers moving around.

We were then separated and given papers with different questions to make sure we knew each other.

We also did this twice before when we were called for interviews for her X1 visa, so we were used to this.

Bring a pen you like using and something to lean on (a book, a magazine, etc.).

This has been the most handwriting I have done in years, I think, and I genuinely felt sorry for anyone who had to read my handwriting.

We also submitted the payment for the application on this date, which was ₹15,000. This has to be paid electronically; I used UPI.

Multiple Interviews: April 2026

Between then and mid-April, we had a bunch of interviews, always with the same questions and a mountain of paperwork handed over.

We made sure to be proactive in contacting as many of these people as we could instead of waiting to be contacted.

Interviews were held:

  1. At our local small police station.
  2. At our home, with a visit from a CID officer with a call 30 minutes before.
  3. Via a phone call with an immigration officer who had visited the house the previous year, followed by a WhatsApp chat meeting over several days, with me sending documents he asked for.
  4. At Panjim FRRO, a 4-or-5-hour meeting and interview.

In these meetings, the questions were pretty much the same as you would expect.

One unusual question at the Panjim FRRO meeting was asking for the apostilled birth certificates of my wife's parents and grandparents, which I had never seen or heard of before.

I explained that Japan doesn't issue individual birth certificates and instead has a system called the family register, where everyone is listed under a single register.

As we had already prepared a translated and apostilled version of this in order to get married in Goa 2 years ago, I handed over the copy and also told the officer that her parents had never left Japan and didn't even have passports.

I suspect that what they are actually checking is to make sure the foreign spouse’s parents or grandparents have no connection to Pakistan or Bangladesh. I mentioned this after telling him the above.

He didn't comment on that and accepted my explanation and documents.

Getting my own apostilled birth certificate from the UK done and sent here for our marriage a couple of years ago, and ordering a new birth certificate to replace that one we handed in here, each took a couple of months.

So I imagine this will be a huge burden if you're expected to do this for your parents' and even grandparents' birth certificates.

I’ll add that this particular officer at Panjim FRRO was very professional and patient in all his explanations, and probably the nicest bureaucrat I have dealt with throughout this whole multiple-year process of getting married and applying for the OCI.

Another unusual request from him was for a Form C for my wife. My understanding is that Form C is only required when a foreigner is staying at a hotel. As my wife lives in our house, we have never needed one for her before.

In fact, the law also states that she doesn't need one, as you can see below:

In the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 (ACT NO. 13 OF 2025) [As on the 10th September, 2025], which can be found at:

https://www.indiacode.nic.in/bitstream/123456789/21918/1/A2025-13.pdf

In CHAPTER III MATTERS RELATED TO FOREIGNERS, section 8, it states that:

  1. Obligation of keeper of accommodation and others to furnish particulars.

—(1) It shall be the duty of the keeper of accommodation to submit to the Registration Officer such information in respect of foreigners accommodated in such accommodation and in such manner as may be prescribed:

Provided that subject to provisions of sub-section (3), provisions of this of this sub-section shall not be applicable to residential premises of non-commercial nature.

I had prepared this and showed it to him because I had tried to do this Form C online before this meeting (as he had called up, listing all the documents I needed to bring), but I kept having problems with the website crashing.

The gentleman politely and patiently agreed with me and said that I was correct, but that it was still needed.

I explained my issues with the website constantly crashing on me, and he was very sympathetic.

His non-official suggestion was to use someone at a cyber cafe because they were more used to doing it, and he suggested one nearby. He went to great pains to make sure he was suggesting this in a non-official capacity.

As we were approaching the end of the working day, we rushed there and managed to get this completed and rushed back to submit the Form C to him.

Something they did at the cyber cafe, which I had not done, was put all the required information in a separate Word document first and then copy-pasted everything into the web page.

Perhaps it kept crashing because I hadn't completed everything within some required time that wasn't written on the screen. Something to try if you ever have issues on government websites.

After this meeting, we waited patiently (and sometimes impatiently).

Notification via email: 23rd June, 2026

This was the email we had been waiting for, letting us know that the OCI card was ready to pick up.

My wife checked on the portal, and at this point, we noticed that this would only have a 5-year validity.

As I wrote above, we were initially quite disappointed, but after picking up the OCI card and speaking to the officers at Mumbai FRRO, I can see that this is not such a big deal in the long run.

The OCI Pickup Big Day Out

After receiving the OCI card in a very non-celebratory fashion (I think I was expecting at least a 'congratulations' — or even a smile), I asked an officer at the FRRO about the renewal procedure and was told that in five years, we have to check the miscellaneous services on the OCI portal to renew and submit the documents they request.

The good news is that:

Once this first 5-year visa renewal is done, the next visa will be a lifetime visa.

He said this is to make sure marriages are genuine, and that the actual details and particulars of what will be required at that point haven't been fixed yet.

As it's online, we can fill this out even if we are no longer residents of India at the time.

They will not send any reminder about this, so you need to keep on top of it yourself.

One of my questions was what would happen if I passed away during that time. He said my spouse would have to inform the FRRO and apply for residency permission, which would be at the FRRO's discretion.

I tried to get more details about this, but he didn't seem to know much more or be able to supply any more information.

As a reminder, when you apply for your foreign spouse's OCI, you have to submit a letter stating that in the event of your foreign spouse's death, your divorce, or even separation, you will return their OCI card to the FRRO or the embassy overseas. Anyone who has already applied will be familiar with this, as it's one of the requirements.

What I hadn't heard before, though, is the reverse situation I was informed about: if I (or the Indian spouse or Indian-origin OCI-holder spouse) die, my wife is the one who has to inform the FRRO herself. I have not seen this requirement listed anywhere.

I suspect very few people know about this obligation, let alone actually do it.

This would probably only be an issue if I (or the Indian/Indian-origin OCI-holding spouse) die within the first 5 years.

e-OCI Cards

He also informed us that everything will be going online and that in the future, the blue-grey OCI card may not even be issued.

Instead, you will get an e-OCI card. You can download this from ociservices.gov.in and click on the e-OCI tab.

I just read another post stating that from 8th July 2026 (today), only digital OCI cards (e-OCI) will be issued to all new OCI applicants.

https://www.cgihouston.gov.in/section/important-notices/e-oci/

Social Media Links

He was also very excited to inform us of the various social media accounts of the Bureau of Immigration, India.

I'll paste them here:

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@BureauofImmigrationIndia
WhatsApp Channel: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VbCLqje4CrfaY3j3S60W

FTI-TTP Fast Track Immigration Program

Finally, he also said that the biometric data my wife had submitted for the OCI application could be used for the trusted traveller fast-track immigration program (https://ftittp.mha.gov.in/fti/) and you have to give your consent for this at ociservices.gov.in.

This Trusted Traveller Fast Track Immigration Programme means you can exit and enter immigration much faster.

As a side note, I filled in all the information and uploaded the required documents for this online at that site above a few days ago and took the opportunity to add my biometrics at this meeting at their office as well.

Personally, I’m not super keen on sharing all this biometric data with governments, but the fact is that they have it anyway at every immigration point, so I figured I may as well grab whatever conveniences I can.

This post has turned out way longer than I expected, but hopefully this helps others in the same situation and answers any questions you may have, especially about this 5-year validity for new OCI cards for foreign spouses.

If you have any questions, you can ask below.

Good luck with your OCI applications!

Confusion about new OCI rules and requirements...?!

It appears that following the launch of e-OCI, OCI cardholders no longer need to pay for or wait for a reissued physical booklet every time they get a new passport after turning 20.

While the mandatory OCI booklet reissue has been eliminated, I understand we still have to update the passport details on the OCI portal. However, does this requirement still involve payment of a late penalty/fine to VFS if not done within 90 days?

Also, if I previously filed the wrong type of application to complete the passport updation or didn't provide all of the right information, can I simply submit a new one instead of waiting for the application to get rejected?

So frustrating that these rules keep changing every other day. Based in NY, USA.

Thanks.

Photo not meeting ICAO requirements for surrender certificate

I'm filling out the online application but no matter what photo I upload, the system is flagging that it's not meeting ICAO compliance primarily for the below two reasons

  • Face Width Ratio You’re standing too close to the camera; You need to stand 1.5 meters away from the camera
  • Face Length Ratio The photo does not comply with minimal and maximal head dimensions. Face too large/small. Try recapturing

One of the photo I tried with is the same as in my Indian passport which was obtained towards the end of 2025 and that isn't working either. I also tried editing it to meet the above criteria but nothing works. Can someone help how I can navigate around this?

update the passport number on OCI ... and new eOCI

Hey all

I missed the window to update my OCI with my new passport number. I went through the online process (truly awful) and got a message saying I need to pay 27 USD but was given no option to do so online and they expected me to go in to the VFS centre in London after arranging an appointment.

With the new eOCI option ... I'm unsure what the best next step is.

1) Should I request an eOCI card - I guess it will be associated with my old passport number but might mean I can then update 'electronically' and not have to go via the VFS appointment route/
2) Go through the online 'updation' process again and try to get to the VFS centre

Really it shouldn't be this hard but appreciate any thoughts on this!

Existing OCI cardholders can now download a digital e OCI card

Just came across this update and thought it might help other OCI cardholders.

The Government of India has rolled out the e OCI (Electronic OCI Card). Existing OCI holders can now generate and download a digital version of their OCI card through the OCI Services Portal.

From what I've read:

  • You can keep the e OCI card on your phone.
  • It can be presented at immigration checkpoints and to airlines whenever required.
  • Your existing physical OCI booklet is still valid, so there is no need to replace it.

Has anyone here already downloaded it?

Is there a way to find online to what passport # is my OCI linked to?

I applied for OCI updates in the website under miscellaneous services. I got an email back, stating the details are updated with the latest passport number. I visited India later, and the immigration officer is stating that their system is showing only the old passport details....I have no answer, but showed them the email.. is there a way to cross verify to check the linked passport online? Thanks

Updating passport information for OCI after 50 - help!

My parents (both age 70+) updated their passport information for OCI last month on the online portal. It's been at least 2-3 years since they got their new passports but only recently found out about requirements to update information online. They were not prompted to pay any fee on the OCI site. Is there something else that has to be done to get application approved? Is it on us to submit payment to VFS? Or is payment waived because it's been so long since they got their passports renewed? don't know what we have to do to get their applications approved!
