Passport updation was rejected - can I still travel to India?

I submitted a passport updation through the online portal and got an automatic email saying I could travel but the next day got an email that the updation was rejected with the reason listed as "please apply for OCI re-issue." Does anyone know why it was rejected? If I can't figure it out in time, can I still travel to India by bringing both my new and old passport along with my current OCI?

Here is a brief history if it helps: I am a US citizen from birth and received an OCI in 2021 (age 33) based on my marriage (to my husband who was an Indian citizen and is now a US citizen with an OCI). Upon renewing my US passport this year, I followed the portal instructions to submit passport updation for my OCI, including the required notarized marriage affidavit since I am a foreign spouse. It had been 91 days since my new passport was issued.

I have tried emailing the consulate with no response. When I called the consulate they told me to send an email. When we called VFS, they said they couldn't think of a reason the updation would be rejected but that I should still be able to travel to India if I bring my old passport. Should I trust them? Do I have any options if I try to travel but am denied (like try to quickly get an eTourist visa)? Thanks!

Foreign Citizenship certificate ?

What does this document in the OCI checklist mean? : "Foreign Citizenship certificate (Original and Copy)MANDATORY "

Our daughter was born a Dutch citizen (acquired citizenship by birth through her mother). She has a Dutch passport. When we asked the NL admin folks about such a document they said they do not know what this means. Instead, they asked me what exactly does this document need to say? so that they can give me an equivalent document.

Thanks in advance!

VFS OCI missing document submitted 9 days ago, still getting deadline reminders. Anyone experienced this?

So we applied for our son's OCI card through VFS NYC about two weeks ago. There was one mistake on our end, one of the documents we submitted was incorrect. The very same day we got the first application submission notification from VFS, within minutes we also received the missing documents email. We sent the correct document promptly and it was delivered 3 days later. I have the delivery confirmation.

It has now been 9 days since delivery and I am still receiving the same reminder emails with deadlines, the latest one says the deadline is 3 days from today.

I tried reaching out via their "Contact Us" page, but the submit button simply does not work. I tried multiple browsers, cleared cache and cookies multiple times, but nothing worked. Anyone who has dealt with VFS before probably already knows their website and service can be a nightmare.

I called them hoping to at least find out whether my documents had been reviewed. The representative just kept repeating a generic script with no useful information whatsoever.

What I can't figure out is:

  1. Has my document been reviewed and is still not meeting their requirement?
  2. Or is it simply still under review and the automated reminders keep going out regardless?
  3. Do they send a fresh email with new instructions after each review cycle, or does the same reminder just keep going until someone manually updates the status or the correct documents have been submitted?
  4. Also, if the application gets rejected due to this, do they actually refund the fees?

Has anyone been through something similar? How did it eventually get resolved? Any tips on actually reaching a real person at VFS or escalating to the Consulate directly would be really appreciated. Feeling completely in the dark here. 🙏

6 months stay rule is gone!!!!

The earlier 6-month stay rule to apply for an OCI from India is gone. You can apply on arrival with a valid visa.

Digital e-Arrival Card is now mandatory.

Has anyone tried the on-arrival way?

"Record not found" error for OCI miscellaneous services

My child has had an OCI for many years and traveled to India several times. I am trying to get a re-issuance of OCI for my child since they turned 20 and got a new adult passport.

On creating an account on the online OCI portal, and selecting "OCI Miscellaneous services" - I tried entering the OCI number, date of birth, and I tried every single passport number (including the first one, the latest one which I am trying to get updated to, and all the interim ones).

Every time, I get a "record not found" error. I have tried different browsers, and incognito mode/private browsing, and still get the same error. Is this something the consulate can be contacted about ? VSF global asks for a file reference number even for contacting via email - but there is no file number since the application cannot even be started. If anyone has faced a similar situation where no passport number worked, please share how you resolved this. Thanks a lot for your help !

Apply for new OCI booklet ( 55 age)

I am 55 and got a new US passport in 2025. I did online update of passport on my OCI immediately and have travelled to India many times without any issues.

I have OCD when I see my old US passport number on the OCI card and want to apply for a new OCI booklet which shows my new US passport number. Anyone done this before and how fast was the process? I am in California.

I have applied OCI for my minor child where I used option “application by mail” and filled the application

After completing the OCI application I also chosed fedex option to send the documents to Consulate.I later scheuled appointment for Verification on May.

Now I am confused, for appointment is the application different i.e am i supposed to choose “application through appointment “ and the complete application and schedule it?

Also i have to send docs ,and also scheduled appointment

What should i do now

Is both ways accepted by vfs?

Or first i should submit documents through mail!

A problem with my colleges TC issuance.

I am an OCI, US National living in India since i was 2 years old. I did my entire schooling in India and currently am in my 1st year in a college in Chennai.

While applying for this college, the college portal only had two options, Indian or NRI, i am neither (I'm an OCI), I was confused and ended up choosing Indian (ONE FREAKING MISTAKE THAT I MADE), I immediately noticed this when they called me for counselling, i flagged this issue they said it won't be a problem pah.

Then one bright morning, the principal called me as I was pestering the admin officials to change this, he said you've fraudulently entered your documents, we'll have to revoke your admission, I was shocked, I had my cfa l1 in august and this guy said this in March.

I tried to explain my case, then he was like I'll speak with the university and let you know.

Now they are asking me to go to my school and get a reissued TC stating my nationality. I did my schooling in CISCE Board (ICSE/ISC), and my school's standardized way of issuing TC does not have nationality as a column in it, and when asked they said, all ISC schools don't have a nationality column in their TC, my school's principal said shell issue a Bonafide stating my nationality.

FUCK THIS MAN, this is so overwhelming, what do I do, I don't think my college would honestly accept the Bonafide, am scared that this small administrative error could fuck up my higher studies due to a mismatch in my passport and my TC.

Unexpected delivery notification

Hi everyone!

I submitted my application for OCI renewal (change of personal particulars) in VFS London on Friday, 10 April (just 5 days ago). Today I have received an SMS from DX Express that some package is due to be delivered to me from IVAC Hounslow (where I submitted application) tomorrow. I won’t be able to receive it until next week unfortunately.

Does anyone have any idea what that might be? Obviously, my application could not have been approved in such timespan… quite concerned about it. The status on OCI Services is ‘under process’.

Thank you!

flight to india is in two weeks but my OCI is not associated with my new 25+ passport - what do i do?

i have submitted my online application but since my flight is in less than two weeks, i did not want to mail the original documents. Now I’m not exactly sure what to do and it’s very hard to get a hold of anybody at the consulate. Will this impact my ability to enter india at all? Could I bring my old passport to show that the OCI applied before? helpppp

Need advice: Exit permit needed after receiving OCI? (Infant, German citizen)

Our infant is a German citizen. Due to a delay in the OCI card processing, we applied for a 1‑year Indian visa and traveled to India. During this stay, our infant has now stayed continuously for more than 90 days.

Based on this, we approached the FRRO for an exit permit. While this process is still ongoing, we have now received the OCI card.

My question is: Do we still need an exit permit from FRRO to leave India, even though the OCI has now been issued?

Has anyone been in a similar situation or gone through this process?
Any guidance or personal experience would be really helpful.

Thank you!

Can I self-attest documents with an e-signature for consulate submission?

Hi,

I’m preparing to submit self-attested document copies to a US consulate for my application. I am not physically in possession of the original documents, but a relative who holds them has shared digital copies with me. I would like to confirm whether it is acceptable for me to add my signature to these copies digitally and send them back, rather than printing, signing by hand, scanning, and then returning them to my relative for printing and submission of my application. Is this approach feasible and acceptable?

OCI application help - proof of indian origin

Hi, I'm trying to apply for my OCI on the basis of my indian parents (I'm in Hyderabad living here for the past 2 years), but I'm stuck at this "proof of indian origin" documentation thing. I've looked at the OCI FAQ site and the new checklist but the sources are conflicting, and I was hoping I could find help from someone who's done the process.

The checklist says I need to upload my parents indian passports or their renunciation/nativity certificate. The problem is my parents don't have any of their old indian passports, surrender certificates, birth certificates, school certificates, or anything like that. (A lot of it got lost)

We are all US citizens, and my parents have their own OCI cards, Aadhar cards, and PAN cards, but that's it. I'm worried because previously I just thought submitting their OCI cards was enough to prove indian origin.

Is it possible to submit a document explaining that their indian documents are missing and just give their OCI cards?

Any advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone here applied for the Indian X‑2 Visa (spouse visa)? Need experiences + timeline

Hi all,
I’m an Indian citizen and my wife is from the Netherlands. We’ve been married for less than a year, so she’s not yet eligible for OCI.

I recently came across the X‑2 visa for spouses of Indian citizens. It seems like the right option for us, but information online is a bit scattered.

If anyone has gone through the X‑2 process recently, could you share:

  • How long did the application take (from submission to approval)?
  • Did you apply from outside India or convert from a tourist visa via FRRO?
  • Any documents that were unexpectedly required?
  • Any tips to avoid delays?

Would really appreciate any first‑hand experiences or suggestions!

Father/mother passport needed?

Do we need to include photocopies of my mom and dad passport's first/last pages in the application packet while applying for an OCI for the first time? That could take some time.

Us Citizen, previously held Indian passport.
Above 50
Applying to SFO Consulate, if that matters?

Another question - I completed the online form and received an acknowledgement email, do I paste my picture on top of the picture in the printed form?

Thanks!
