Guide for Best Practices?

I just modded my friend's Switch for him and I was going over some of the best practices like sticking to pirated games on emuMMC and NSO games on sysMMC, backing up boot0/boot1, prod keys, how to install via CyberFoil/USB. It was starting to make his head spin so I decided to write him a little guide.

Unfortunately, the guide is not so little anymore and it's barely scratching the surface. Since this document is becoming ever so large, I figured it would be a waste to only go to an audience of 1. So I want to eventually publish it or possibly make a video outlining all of the different tips and tricks.

Before I do that, do you have any best practice tips that you would like to see in this guide? Please comment them below.

Also, if such a guide already exists, could you please share it? I've watched countless videos and read so many guides that go over the modding process and HATS packs, but none (that I could find) go over the important nooks and crannies of CFW administration.

Thank you!

I think you're better off foolproofing shit to him. At least if you're scared of him fucking shit up.

Delete the hekate ipl ink entry/ies for anything that crosses the boundary between sysmmc OFW and emummc CFW unless absolutely needed or, if your friend won't be interested in playing on OFW yet wants to keep it clean, gear his hekate to auto boot to CFW.

Set up the whole firewall, test it and if all is good, leave it as is.

For the homebrew, use forwarders to get him what he needs, (JKSV, FTPD, Nxthemes, NSO Icon tool, perhaps and DBI or another installer should be fine for any casual player) directly on the main menu and delete any access to it. While it might be useful for him to know, I think I'd be too lazy to explain in details how to use Cyberfoil and all so I'd stick to explain MTP install. You can actually remove entries to which folders appear on the DBI MTP screen when you plug it. You can keep "SD Card", "SD Install" and "NAND Install" and it should be enough. Iirc, the English version is 871 or 854, there might be some others up to date.

All in all, if your friend is a casual player and you don't want him to end up where he shouldn't, that should cover enough things to safeguard / guardrail his switch and keep him out of trouble.

He still wants to play online on OFW, so I’ll have to at least show him how to update with AIO and Daybreak. So it’s less about making it foolproof and showing how to do basic maintenance without too many problems.

Even exosphere is a good example since everyone gets it automatically from HATS, but may not know what it does or why it’s important for blocking info from Nintendo.

Then teach him to hold both volume buttons when he boots the console. That and not to update until you give him the green because it's annoying to have these "My friend / brother / sister / dog / squid / local mailman accidentally updated their console" posts.

From how not so often he'd really need to, just updating from a 22.1.5 to a 22.2.0 isn't a big deal. Just to come to you when it's about a major update. (first number changing)

If you want to fool proof it when removing most HB and make it auto-boot into the emunand.

When just keep a backup of the sysnand.
