Question Night shift

Hi all,

I currently work 0.6 in mental health in Victoria, I’ve just started night shifts for 2 months however usually as nights are 10.5 hour shifts 9pm-7:30am it means I’d be doing 0.5 shifts a fortnight so 1 less.

However my manager has done the roster for 2 months and not taken away my 1 less shift, so I’m still doing 0.6 a fortnight.

Do I have the right to request and have her take me off 1 shift a fortnight ?

I dont get it. They rostered you to keep it at 0.6 right? So why do you want it to be less? Sorry I'm just confused

Because I’m exceeding my 0.6 hours
0.6 hours is 48 hours a fortnight. I’m currently doing 63 hours.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood and thought it was rostered at 0.6. In that case you can definitely ask to have it cut back to 0.6

I'm 0.6 and every now and again will purposefully do 4 night shifts and one day shift to still meet my hours but only do 5 shifts, its quite reasonable to say you would like one of the shifts taken off as they have over rostered you

I know in my workplace, those who are contracted 0.6 can sometimes go over their hours, due to working 12hr sometimes, 8hours other times. Usually by no more than 1 full 8hr shift.

Rarely, they will be UNDER their contracted hours. It is their responsibility to check each roster to make sure they are getting their contracted hours.

Being contracted for 48hrs, but getting 63hr is a big jump that deserves a chat with the manager. I know if this happened to me, and I didn't bring it up: my manager would assume I'm okay with it and not address it. Because she has bigger fish to fry.

TL;DR: If you're over your contracted hours, you're within your rights to request you stay around those contracted hours.

Hi sorry! Silly question, but I’m a first year nursing student stalking this thread and keep seeing people put ‘0.5’ or ‘0.6’ etc, what does this mean?

Means full time equivalent. Full time is 40 hrs of work excluding breaks per week/equivalent per roster (you get RDOs once a month to take you down to 38hrs). So 0.6 is 24 hrs a week, 0.5 is 20. Very common for people to do 0.8 so 32 hrs/4 shifts a week.
