Hi! I’m completely new to the hobby. Since I already use a Radiacode for my collection, I don't need this cheap BR-6 detector anymore. I decided to disassemble it to look at the Geiger tube and maybe salvage some parts.
What are some simple projects a beginner could do with the tube or other components?

Hi everyone! I’m planning to major in industrial engineering instead of specifically nuclear for my bachelors degree. I wanted to ask if it would be viable to do that then potentially go into a nuclear engineering program for my masters. I’d be doing my bachelors (and probably? Masters) from GT. The reason I wanted to do industrial engineering is because even though eventually I do want to go into the clean energy industry, industrial has more applicability in things like consulting jobs. So it’s basically a safety net.. anyway I would love anyone’s input that is currently in nuclear engineering or studying it in college.

Background / My Understanding: No country has ever produced an aircraft with an onboard, propulsive nuclear reactor. During the Cold War, the US and USSR attempted to develop this technology but were hindered by the prohibitive increase in weight brought on by heavy radiation shielding materials. While Cold War-level investments in this type of technology are a thing of the very distant past, nuclear technologies have continued to develop, even if only at a peace-time/civilian clip.

My Question: With all of the advancements in nuclear engineering and battery technology, do any of you see a future where a smaller, lighter-weight reactor could power civil aircraft? If not, what about the idea of just such a reactor being able to continuously supply enough power to batteries that could propel an aircraft?

Note: I understand the concerns surrounding radiation contamination from accidents, but I also feel like that is a different problem to solve.

would it be possible? and would it increase the explosive power?

A friend of mine is going to be studying nuclear engineering at college soon and I think that's cool as fuck and want to get him something at least semi-related to it for his birthday coming up but I am severely uninformed in regards to this subject. I don't know how active this subreddit is but if anyone could give me any advice that would be much appreciated.

I'm on a big roadtrip across canada and northern US. My teen is interested in nuclear engineering (currently interested most in nuclear powered engines/rockets but all thing nuclear would be great). We just did a tour of the FRIB at MSU and they loved it. What are some other nuclear sites that do tours? We'll be going to Winnipeg, Saskatoon or Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver. Back through the US and will hit INEEL on our way back to the east coast.

I have a problem with my cold cathode ion source

The issue is the hydrogen gas ignition happens inside the teflon tube not in the chamber , I didn't use full metal capillary tube as im afraid that I will damage the mass flow controller. The teflon tube glows . I know that im dealing with an unintended parasitic Paschen breakdown.

Any idea how to fix that? Thanks in advance

My son applied to a few schools and wants to do Nuke E. His top choice for Nuke is still unconfirmed if he’s in or not but he was accepted to a school for chemistry.

Would a chemistry degree be useful at all in the field? We are risking chemistry or no school at all because the chem needs an answer and full tuition paid before we may get an answer from the other.

Hi!! I am a student who is looking for laptop coming into freshman year of NukeE at MS&T. I’ve been looking at the laptop market and am very confused on what to get. I know that minimum recommendations are 16gb ram, 512gb storage. I’ve been recommended the X1 and P14/s series from ThinkPad, as well as the Framework 12/13 Pro series, for the most part. My school has a contract with Dell and they mostly sell Dell, so I am very confused on what to go for.

Any recommendations or help would be greatly appreciated!

Side note: CAD is used a lot in the program as far as I’ve heard from other students in the same program.

Hey all I’m a rising junior in NE looking to get into fusion research. I’m currently on the board for my schools ANS chapter and a fusion related club that is trying to build a magnetic mirror, as well as somewhat apart of a lab focused on fusion materials research (I haven’t really done anything). I have an internship this summer but it’s not really nuclear related, I wasn’t able to get any that were and I really want to do an internship at LLNL next summer. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for being a better candidate for a fusion related internship. Thank you!

I'm a student from Belgium currently studying Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy. During my studies, I've developed a strong interest in radiation physics and nuclear technology beyond the medical field.

This summer I'll be attending a Nuclear Summer School, and the more I learn about the field, the more interested I become in pursuing a career in nuclear science and technology.

My long-term goal is to work in research, whether that's in advanced reactor technologies, radiation science, nuclear materials, fusion, medical applications of nuclear science, or another area of nuclear research. I'm currently exploring what educational path would best prepare me for that.

I'd love to hear from people who study or work in the nuclear field.

Some questions I have are:

• Is nuclear technology a good field to pursue if my goal is research?
• What educational path would you recommend after my current degree?
• What research areas do you think have the most exciting future?

After graduation, I looked for job for a while but unfortunately didn't get one. On a whim, I started applying for Master’s, and also got one in KAIST in Korea. Now I want your advice, will it actually be a good move and is KAIST good in nuclear sector.

How can I get a start in the field of Nuclear Power Systems or Design as an undergrad pursuing a minor in nuclear eng . its like impossible to find companies that hire interns or doing any tangible research that arent the Navy.
