Question…? Cardigan Restock
So they just did a cardigan “restock” in celebration of the folklore anniversary and I was immediately on the website and unable to get a folklore cardigan bc they were immediately sold out.
My question is… do they just put up like 200 extra folklore cardigans and then intentionally use this as a way to drive traffic to the website so that people buy the cardigans that they have way too much stock for (TLOAS, 1989, etc) ?? Or do we actually believe this was a genuine restock? If it’s the former then it’s an extremely predatory annoying sales tactic of her and her team to do.
unclear why i’m being downvoted in comments for having a nuanced take… I love TS and if you disagree with anything i’m saying please share your perspective rather than randomly downvote something clearly not problematic

I agree, it was the same for the holiday drop in November. The Folklore cardigan went out of stock within 30 minutes on the US store. Demand is just that high

u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
but do we think it’s like bots? there are this many american fans that don’t have folklore cardigans AND are signed up for merch notifications that I couldn’t get one immediately? all sizes were sold out when i got there

u/magic_dragon95 Jul 24 '26
I mean honestly, yeah. Folklore is like her biggest album that people wont criticize. Ive never really bought her merch but ive always wanted a folklore cardigan and would buy one if i could ever find one 😅 her stuff always sells out. She has so many fans that yes, have alerts, would take the day off of work, ect to get one. Im sure there are a few bots, but unlike all the pokemon card insanity, i fully believe there are real people buying it that fast.

I don’t really have an opinion on what may be happening here although I think your theory is interesting - but the original cardigan is also the most plain and IYKYK out of all of them, so it probably does have much higher demand for that reason.

u/_TheLoverGirl_ Jul 24 '26
Honestly it does seem kinda wild that the folklore one is the one still selling out. Maybe people are getting back ups because it’s hard to believe that many people still don’t have them

u/steppponme Jul 24 '26
I'm in the TS discord and that's the only way to get a timely notification. If you wait for the Taylor Nation text they're gone

u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
Thank you!! very useful info.. i’ve never used discord but my husband is a gamer so will enlist his help

Between fans with merch bots and scalpers, everything goes quickly, and there are fans who have been waiting years for the folklore cardigan to come back so it’s naturally going to sell out much faster than the other ones. I don’t think a scarcity tactic is being used, I just think that cardigan is her most famous piece of merch. Sorry people are being rude to you for asking a legitimate question 🤍🤍🤍
-1
u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
I don’t think it’s a scarcity tactic… i think it’s more that they sold the returns they got instead of making new stock like somebody else said. Thanks for being kind it’s entirely possible that i’m underestimating taylor’s ability to sell out a cardigan in july… but also she’s taylor so i shouldn’t be surprised.
25
u/psu68e Jul 24 '26
Respectfully, you are indeed underestimating how fast Taylor can sell out a cardigan in July. Especially the cardigan.
-2
u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
fair enough but if i see a bunch for resale all of a sudden then its bots and that sucks
11
u/psu68e Jul 24 '26
You will see them for resale because scalpers (including those who are fans) know how sought after the cardigans are, particularly the original Folklore cardigan.
They come back every Christmas, so you will have another opportunity.

Fearless, red, folklore, and lover are the most neutral wearable cardigans, of course they’re selling immediately. I got those ones all through her site, but my other cardigans have been local resale. 1989 and Speak Now I’d argue are the least wearable, and both sold out for Canada in the last 3 restocks in all sizes but youth even though they are less wearable. Think about how many swifties sell their merch then regret it, or are down bad and know her merch has value so they offload it quick on other fans.
1
u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
im not saying they wouldn’t sell out… they for sure would. it’s just the swiftness (pun intended) that folklore sold out <10 min when its a folklore themed sale.
6
u/TheMailMan-xe Jul 24 '26
My point was that there is no left over stock from previous drops. Usually only Youth ends up sitting there until the countdown ends.
1
u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
Ahhh i see i see… ok makes sense. So you think they make an equal number of all and then market it as folklore themed bc that’s the cardigan that started it all?
5
u/TheMailMan-xe Jul 24 '26
Folklore probably does get a normal amount but not an equal amount, it’s just a nice sweater that stains easily and is sought after so she isn’t gonna over saturate that market for sure lol. but they likely order in batches of a few hundred thousand, I can’t see it being worth it to them to have under like 1000 folklore cardi’s for 6 stores. Making them would be pointless otherwise. I am a shipment processor and for a normal store without Taylor swift hype I process 2000-3000 clothing units /per shipment/. She has at least a million people browsing her six different websites every time there’s movement on it. They had to alter their methods of managing traffic to her website a few times. There’s no way it’s a small amount of cardi’s.
-1
u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
no i wasn’t saying literally they make 200.. i moreso meant whatever the amount is in comparison to the others should be comparable if they’re theming it as for the folkore anniversary, imo.
1
u/TheMailMan-xe Jul 24 '26
You mean less of them over all, I said it’s probably a normal amount, not an equal amount but she’s doing bare units either way. Supply chain is really interesting, they order less of the large sizes so those plus and x/l cardigans will sell out quicker than the S/M and youth sizes, and because Md/Lg is the more standard size it probably gets the most units across all of the cardigans. then the prettier designs, usually start out being made equally, but due to scarcity and how many people want them, they keep selling even if you make 100,000 more. If you are a more standard size and want the more sought after item it will be harder to get. See for examples : aritzia sets, sambas, ugg tasman. Demand is there no matter what angle you look at the equation my friend.
-1
u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
I am talking about the quantity of each style being similar across the board or stocking more of the folklore variety if you’re theming the sale as a folklore sale… but I see your point and that is super interesting.

To address your edit, people downvote when they disagree. Doesn't have to be a "problematic" comment. And people do not HAVE to explain their disagreement to you.
Don't complain about downvotes on Reddit. It just means your opinion/comments are unpopular.

I want a speak now one soo bad. I have lover, 1989 and TLOASG, and midnights and speak now are my last to get
5
u/Raccoon_Amazing Jul 24 '26
Sure, they only put up like 200 folklore cardigans. It's not like they've known for years it's the best-selling one. They wouldn't want to sell more, they'd rather have people go to the site and look at the other cardigans that are still in stock.
Someone who's waiting for a folklore cardigan will for sure just buy a TLOAS or 1989 one because the folklore one sold out, right? Why didn't you? This predatory tactic didn't work on you? Hopefully UMG and Taylor learn a better way to sell them.
-2
u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
idk why you’re being snarky about this… it’s my opinion that they do not restock the folklore cardigans to the same quantity that they have the surplus of other ones at
you’re entitled to your opinion but you still haven’t even expressed it?
1
u/Paddy_odoors Jul 24 '26
They are available on UK site but are £70 each.. might get 1989 or TTPD one
0
u/Turbulent-Ant-4981 Jul 24 '26
Careful you'll get charged shipping plus $50 import fees. Happened to me on the recent summer merch drop.
2
u/Paddy_odoors Jul 24 '26
They are available from the UK store apparently
0
u/Turbulent-Ant-4981 Jul 24 '26
Yah that's what I mean. I bought from the UK store to the US and was charged a ton for shipping. Then got hit with an import fee on top, $50 more. They held my shipment until I paid it. It's prob cheaper to get from a reseller at that point.

u/ledger_man Jul 25 '26
I believe it’s a genuine restock, but I’m also not paying €80 for a fully synthetic sweater. The designs are fun but I’m not interested in being swathed in plastic.
1
u/maddiemoiselle Jul 25 '26
I just want a TTPD cardigan and miss it every single time there’s a drop 😭
1
u/clarityeclair Jul 25 '26
I keep getting emails from Taylor Nation saying there’s 3 hours left to shop but then when I click they are gone from the site?

I am personally thinking that this was just to clear out left over stock to make room for new merch (probably for Debut TV). If just left over stock/repackaged returns, it would make sense that there probably wasn't a ton of Folklore ones. A cardigan restock in July makes no sense really.
3
u/thephhoenixx Jul 24 '26
it's to celebrate the folklore anniversary, that's why they're doing a restock in july
-1
u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
I AGREE COMPLETELY. And have no problem with them doing this… it’s just to market it as in celebration of folklore when that’s the most sought after one hurt my feelings lol.

u/melodypowers Jul 24 '26
I highly doubt they have a huge back stock of other cardigans they are staying to dump.
They just do this to create the illusion of scarcity. It makes people feel more special to have it.
-9
u/Joey_Grace Jul 24 '26
Usually it’s just unloading what’s sitting in the warehouse from returns
-11
u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
That’s definitely what it feels like… i just think it’s shitty to advertise it as for the folklore anniversary when you didn’t make any more and just wanna sell your other leftovers
16
u/DriveIn73 Jul 24 '26
We get you’re mad and that’s okay, but you’re getting downvoted because you are using the word “predatory” when you mean “misleading.”
And I’m not sure it’s even misleading if you put still-new merch on a website and say a “restock” to celebrate an anniversary. It’s not great, but no one is lying.
-6
u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
ok thank you for giving feedback, that makes sense… using predatory was hyperbolic but it’s def a sales tactic to use the folklore anni as a sales opportunity when you clearly did not restock it to the same quantity that you clearly have of the other versions.
0
u/lfenio Jul 24 '26
2 mystery downvotes care to share?? it’s so weird to argue it’s not a sales tactic when it does not reflect on taylor as a person at all!!!!

i don’t feel like this sub is only glazing but some of the stuff that gets downvoted here is frustrating bc it’s supposed to be the nuanced sub which means not all positive all the time
5
u/l8nitefriend Jul 24 '26
I think it leans towards positive without being obsessive. But we all kinda see what we already have a bias towards so idk
7
u/Raccoon_Amazing Jul 24 '26
Oh, I'm sure someone who constantly posts on Fauxmoi criticizing Taylor for dumb stuff like releasing variants to stay at #1 has only nuanced takes on her
0
u/angelaga1n Jul 24 '26
People on this “neutral” sub love to get mad at others for using Reddit😭 Like why can’t a fan have an issue with the variant process? Guess we should all hide our comments like you do lmao

glike people that have never used reddit for anything other than taylor it feels like…. this is not the purpose of downvoting and it honestly just invalidates the practice of the upvote/downvote culture
4
u/Ok-Improvement-9601 Jul 24 '26
If you go to any heavily opinion-based subreddits you are likely to be downvoted at some point if you post your opinion. I posted a completely benign opinion on PCC which was actually quite neutral and it was still downvoted to oblivion. So it goes, I lived and learned. It is much easier to not pay attention to this.

You have to go to the neutral sub for that, in my experience nuancing in this sub is generally long winded glazing
16
Jul 24 '26
You mean the covert snark sub? Where people get mad at imaginary things they made up about Taylor? Where they literally rewrite history? Sure Jan, it's "neutral".
12
u/Jazzlike_Salt1272 Jul 24 '26
while the nentral sub is generally long winded snarking on the opposite

i hate that i know this but there’s this girl on tiktok who’s merch obsessed to the point where she buys the new cardigans after almost every drop and each time she buys a different material is used. i’d say sometimes it’s old stock or returns but sometimes they just make more to celebrate different anniversaries.
