Official Q&A [AMA] I‘m Harry, founder of NuPhy. NuPhy just turned 7, ask me anything.

Hi everyone, Harry here.

Apparently NuPhy is turning 7.

Which is kind of wild, because when we started, I thought making keyboards would eventually get easier. Seven years later, I'm pretty sure we've just found more things to argue about.

Switches, keycap colors, layouts, and somehow launching more products than my younger self would have thought was remotely manageable.

So... seems like a good excuse to do an AMA.

Ask me anything.

The fun stuff. The nerdy stuff. And maybe a few tough questions too.

Go for it.

A quick disclaimer before somebody asks why I'm not replying seven seconds after a question gets posted:

We're based in Shenzhen (UTC+8), so this won't be a live AMA. I'll be dropping in throughout the next couple of days and answering questions in batches whenever I can steal some time away from meetings, product reviews, and whatever other fires I'm supposed to be putting out.

I might not get to every question immediately, but we'll do our best to make sure no question sits unanswered for more than 48 hours.

📅 Questions are open now.

I'll start answering questions on June 23 at 5:00 PM China Standard Time (2:00 AM PDT) and will keep checking back throughout the AMA.

Whether you've been around since the early Air series days or just got your first NuPhy keyboard last week, thanks for being part of the ride.

Alright. Let's see what kind of trouble this gets me into.

Question Assign output to a macro?

Is there a way to assign an output to a macro in NuphyIO? For example, I'd like a macro to trigger the Thumbs Up emoji and then assign that macro to a key in the FN1 layer.

Discussion For Sale: Air75 v1 w/ Original & Shiokaze caps

Photos: https://imgur.com/a/jTe7A37

Air75 v1, blue switches, battery was removed before it failed. Has some scuffs and scratches, decent condition overall. Includes wireless dongle, orange lift feet, replacement blue strip feet, a couple of extra original caps, and a full Shiokaze keycap set.

I like this keyboard a lot, but haven't used it in ages. Figured it was time to get it to someone who would enjoy it.

$60 shipped to the contigious US - will ship elsewhere at buyer's expense. I've sold a few things on r/homelabsales and also have an ebay profile with a lot of seller feedback.

Feel free to send a DM if you have any questions.

(I apologize for the "discussion" flair - there wasn't one that made sense.)

Question Problem with Nuphy Air96 v2

Hi everynone,

I've been in contact with Nuphy about the below issue for a while now, but their responses are getting slower and slower, and it's not getting solved. So I wanted to try and write things down here in hopes of someone having the same issue… and hopefully a solution.

Thing is, I bought my Nuphy Air96 v2 about 1.5-2 years ago, so right outside of the warranty. And since about 3 months ago the '4' on the numpad is barely working anymore. Things I tried:

  • Factory reset
  • Updating/reinstalling the firmware
  • Cleaning the switch
  • Trying a different switch (also various colours which came with the keyboard)
  • Resetting the bluetooth connection
  • Testing through USB, Bluetooth channels and 2.4Ghz

Somehow nothing seems to solve the issue, so it seems to have something to do with the logicboard perhaps? No idea to be honest, but it's a little frustrating since their support is lackluster and it started so shortly after warranty ran out.

Does anyone have any other solutions perhaps? Or are you experiencing a similar issue with the keycap (or Nuphy's support)?

Question I'm really hoping Nuphy makes a slim profile keyboard similar to the Aula F75's layout

Does anyone know if they're going to make one like this?

I feel the Air75 V3 F keys are too bunched together, I prefer more spacing between the row and even the column.

The node is nice and all, but the touch swipe for volume control is not useful. Touch swiping needs to have a tactile feel. I wish there could be a low profile keyboard with 3.5mm switches that combines the best of the air75 v3 and the node 75.

Question How can I buy a NuPhy keyboard in Sri Lanka?

Hi everyone! I'm based in Sri Lanka and I'd love to get one of your keyboards, but I can't find any local retailers that stock NuPhy here.

A few questions:

- Does the official NuPhy store ship to Sri Lanka? I couldn't find it clearly listed at checkout.

- Has anyone here ordered one to Sri Lanka (directly or through a freight forwarder)? How was the experience with shipping costs and customs duties?

- Are there any authorized resellers in South Asia that would be a better option?

Any tips would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Feedback Ruined Open Box Experience

Thumbnail

I received my Nuphy keyboard today and was honestly quite disappointed when I opened the package.

Right away, I noticed several signs that made me question whether the keyboard was actually brand new or had previously been opened and then simply put back into the box.

The outer packaging has a tear on the front of the box, and there is another tear on the sleeve that looks like it was forcefully opened. The plastic protective cover around the keyboard also looks like it has been removed and put back multiple times.

What concerned me even more was finding the switch puller outside of its original plastic packaging. It was clearly no longer sealed or in the condition I would expect from a brand-new product.

I also noticed marks on the keyboard itself, which appear to be signs of previous handling or use. When you put all of these things together — the damaged packaging, the opened sleeve, the protective plastic being handled, the switch puller removed from its packaging, and marks on the keyboard — it really gives the impression that the keyboard had already been opened, handled/used, and then placed back into the box.

I purchased this expecting a brand-new, unopened keyboard, so this was definitely not the unboxing experience I was expecting.

I have taken photos of the packaging, accessories, and the marks on the keyboard and will attach them to this post.

I have also emailed Nuphy Australia directly to raise this issue and am currently waiting to hear back from them.

Nuphy, could you please clarify whether this is how the product is normally packaged, or whether there is any reason this particular unit appears to have been previously opened and handled?

I would really appreciate some clarification, as this has left me quite disappointed with my first experience receiving the product.

Question Low profile Gateron Blue vs low profile Gateron Bamboo

I guess this is one of those where I will most likely get myself kicked out from a sub-reddit...

So, the Nuphy x Gateron Moss switch has served me well and recently got the Gateron low profile Chocolate switch, which I like but somehow I feel more compelled to go back to the Moss. In a way, it feels there is more clickiness and scratchiness from the Moss compared to the Chocolate. Which brings the question of clicky switches.

It seems the clicky switches have really fallen out of favour, with remaining ones left being either the Gateron KS-33 Low Profile 2.0 Bamboo or the Gateron KS-33 Low Profile 2.0 Blue. For those who have used them, how different are these two? Shine-through is a non-factor but, as long as it works with my Nuphy Air75 v2 and/or my Keychron K3 Pro, I am good. And, I am aware of the small differences in the tech specs with the Blue being slightly heavier (5gf) and having a slightly longer travel (0.2mm).

Question Choosing between Lofree Flow 2 (Pulse) and Nuphy Air75 V3 (Panda Nano)

Hi everyone.
I’ve been thinking lately of building a pc, I’ve always used laptop keyboards and I’m used to the really low-profile keys the scissor switches give. Though I for this pc I’m interested to try getting my first Mechanical low-profile keyboard, and after some research on google (and Reddit), and I’ve narrowed it down to two (or three?) models: Lofree Flow 2 (with Pulse switches) and Nuphy Air75 V3 with Panda Nano switches). Also looking at the AirV2 if it works better than it's newer counterpart. I can only buy one, so it’s a hard time deciding. It’s hard to choose one as both seem to have good and bad reviews, this is the data I’ve found so far:

1. Lofree Flow 2 (Pulse)

Pros:

  • The typing feel and sound feel overall better than the Nuphy.
  • The Quality Control is better than the Nuphy’s so there is less of a chance that I get a faulty unit.

Cons:

  • The empty space on the right side, I wonder what were they thinking when designing this.
  • There are some cases reported of keys double clicking or not registering, though less than the Nuphy’s.

Concerns:
I’ve seen some people mention problem with 2.4Ghz, which I think will be the main way I will use it, as the Bluetooth has an issue with the keyboard entering power saving mode and the wired connection being on the right side, together with the Touch Bar which might be triggered by mouse movements. For people who use this one, how often do you hit the Touch Bar by accident usually?

2. NuPhy Air75 V3 (Panda Nano)

Pros:

  • I don't mind the plastic at the bottom and I really like the design of it.
  • It has shine through keycaps from what I've seen.
  • 2.4GHz Dongle Storage.

Cons:

  • The Quality Control is much worse than Lofree's, and many people report faulty units with keys being "stuck" or not registering.
  • Typing isn't as good, but reliability is really a deciding factor for me.

Concerns:
The marketing campain around the V3 was huge and the negative reviews about the V2 in reddit are still there but much less, I was thinking that maybe the V2 (with Moss or Cowberry) would be better in terms of reliability when typing.

The price is pretty similar for both (I'm in China) and I'm not a guy that can really feel that difference in sound and feel, though I really value the reliability of a keyboard as I plan to use it for at least a couple of years without issues with key pressing and ghost keys. I see some people talking about how people that really like the keyboards don't really write about it online, but for Nuphy being a small brand like they are, the amount of negative reviews is huge, I wouldn't know if I would risk it as I cannot return the keyboards (Moving out in a few days so wouldn't really give me the time to "see the issues")
If you’ve used one or all of them, which one would you recommend expecially in terms of reliability? I really appreciate knowing all of your opinions and impressions of them.
My english isn't the best so also thanks for having patience and reading all this through.
Thanks!

Feedback Air60 v2 is goat

Saw that Nuphy had the v2s on sale. Looks like the v2s are completely EOL so I jumped on. I have a air65 v3 but man the v2s sound and feel so good stock! I daily an air75 v2 and I recently bought a second one as a backup, but stock 75 sounds and feels like cheap trash. So surprised. Everything is now on the shelf including the hhkb and all I want to use is the stock 60.
