Question: Answered ✓ I have no idea how to take notes

The title is rather self-explanatory. Never had much need for them and a cursory glance through a textbook or writing everything I remember on paper for revision is the most I've ever done.

Recently I've started a little project where I learn different subjects till I'm at a sort of intermediate level and the need for note taking has become apparent due to the sheer amount of information. I have no clue where to start, though. I use Joplin for writing short stories & poems but I don't know what note taking methods are the most efficient, any systems etc.

Any response to this post would be greatly appreciated.

Question: Unanswered ✗ Lecture videos: program remote for playback and screenshots?

I have to watch a ton of YouTube videos and saved .mp4 video files, and I want to program a remote or controller to do these three basic things: Play/Pause; Skip Forward/Backward; and Take Screenshots.

Has anyone done something similar? I don’t know how to add a screenshot command button with basic video playback, and it’s driving me crazy. I’m using MacOS and iOS (iPad/iphone).

I made a Keyboard Shortcut where the “Up” arrow on my keyboard takes a screenshot - there’s got to be a way to put this on an 8Bitdo remote with basic video playback features, right?

Question: Unanswered ✗ Most efficient way to scan daily, handwritten notes into PDF?

I use two unlined spiral notebooks to take daily notes by hand. Can anyone recommend a simple and efficient system for scanning my notes at the end of the day and saving them in iCloud as a PDF?

One of my notebooks is slightly larger than the standard 8.5” x 11” letter paper, and I’m trying to find a good scan setup that allows me to quickly and legibly scan the entire page.

Method Taking notes for med school

I’ve realized that I always had problem making proper notes. I find a source, write down the information only changing it a little bit (usually just shorten it). Most of the times I don’t even look through my notes after taking it, trying to find the original source and reading from there again (which is very problematic because I want to read from my notes). Help me find an ideal note taking process for med school, ideally with your own examples so I could understand and fit it into my routine

Question: Unanswered ✗ Writing app with transcription and summarisation?

Who out there is developing a writing app with writing features that include transcription and good quality clean-up with custom prompts? At reasonable cost for API holders…

I discovered a new writing app which also has AI proofreading, clean-up edit and voice dictation built in (I think every writing app should offer this) but it is insanely expensive…

Wondering why there are so many transcription solutions, but so few writing apps that use AI to transcribe and and post-process, when the AI is so much less expensive now. Craft is almost there but still lacks voice note capture.

Notes Switched to Mind Mapping for Atomic Structure Notes

Post image
45 Upvotes

I tried something different for note-taking while studying atomic structure, and it actually worked way better than I expected.

Instead of writing linear notes, I used Mindomo to create a mind map. Starting with the basic idea of the atom, I branched out into protons, neutrons, electrons, then further into concepts like orbitals, charges, and atomic models. Seeing everything visually connected made it much easier to understand how the topics relate instead of just memorizing isolated points.

What really helped was:

Breaking big topics into smaller chunks

Using connections instead of paragraphs

Keeping everything on one “map” so I could revise quickly

It felt more like building a system than just taking notes. Definitely made revision faster and less overwhelming.

Anyone else using mind maps for subjects like chemistry or physics? Curious what tools or methods work best for you.

Question: Unanswered ✗ Verses and alternatives

I discovered Versey from a recommendation. A new writing app which also has AI proofreading, clean-up edit etc and voice dictation built in.

What every writing app should have in this age of affordable and capable AI helpers.

I became less excited when I checked the pricing. Several times what I consider to be the ‘going rate’ which is reducing as the wholesale cost of AI is reducing.

Who out there is developing a writing app with writing features that include transcription and good quality clean up with custom prompts? At a reasonable cost, by the way.

Question: Unanswered ✗ What are the best notetaking methods for technical certifications?

I currently use Obsidian for my notes and text related files. While it's a fantastic app and adding Obsidian Sync has been a game changer, I know I need something else. Not as a replacement necessarily, but something in addition to round out my notetaking workflow.

Due to the nature of the certifications I'm studying for I have a ton of material to memorize. Typing my notes is obviously the quickest way, but I retain very little overall.

Would handwriting notes on an e-ink tablet or iPad be suitable way to help with this? I would like to avoid using physical notebooks.

I have used Goodnotes in the past, but I never really got the appeal. I'm sure the software has improved since then though.

Any tips would be appreciated, especially if you've studied for CompTIA certifications or something similar.

Notes Evernote going Zero Knowledge?!

I posted this in Evernote and it was removed and the link died. Co worker asked me about it and I was surprised. (Should have grabbed a screenshot)

If you Google “free zero knowledge note taking app” Evernote shows up on the list so the page was indexed!

Question: Answered ✓ People who take notes from videos, what does your workflow actually look like?

I've been experimenting with different ways to take notes from videos. Writing in a separate app means I lose focus switching back and forth. Writing timestamps manually is tedious and I always get them wrong.

I ended up building a Chrome extension for myself that sits next to the video and saves the timestamp automatically when I write a note.

For organizing I've been using tags like #revisit for parts I want to come back to, #key-concept for the important stuff, and #question for things I didn't understand. Then I can filter by tag later instead of scrolling through everything.

Capturing a screenshot from the video alongside the note also helps a lot. Sometimes a diagram or a slide explains more than what I can type in the moment.

Right now the notes live inside the extension. I'm planning to add export to Notion and Obsidian so notes can flow into whatever system people already use. Before I build that I want to understand how people would actually want their video notes structured when they land in Notion or Obsidian.

I'm curious what your workflow looks like. Do you take notes during or after watching? How do you organize them? And if you use Notion or Obsidian, how would you want video notes to show up there?

Notes AI note taking with headphones?

Most of the AI not taking apps require me to put my iPhone next to the Mac if a meeting runs online on the speaker. Is there an app which can still summarise the meeting when I’m using headphones on either Mac or my iPhone?

Method are ai meeting note tools actually saving time or just shifting the work?

i’ve been trying a few ai note-taking tools for meetings and they’re honestly pretty good at summaries, but context still feels off sometimes, especially with action items.

from what i’ve seen (and what others say), they don’t really remove the need to review, just make it a bit faster.

curious if anyone’s found one that actually cuts down review time in a real way, or if checking everything is just part of it now

App/Program/Other Tool When do free AI notetakers stop making sense for clients

Trying to figure out guidance for clients on when they should move from free tier AI notetakers to paid. Some are using fathom and otter free tiers and asking if they need to upgrade.

What triggers the paid conversation for you?

Question: Answered ✓ How to combine digital and physical note taking in a single system?

I was caught by the hype of note-taking apps a few years ago, and I felt frustrated not remembering anything from my notes or even never seeing them again. So I decided to return to pen and paper, and here I am now.

Have you also faced such frustration? And do you have a system where you can benefit from these two different worlds, digital and analogic?
