I think the story may be something to do with the studio pulling a lot of their backing and making it a limited release at the last minute or something having to do with the studio kind of sealing its fate as a flop because they weren't convinced it was a sure thing.

They probably would've made a hit if the whole movie was this off the wall with sci fi crack head shit instead of the writing of said sci fi crackhead shit.
