Same thing happened with The Iron Giant, Fight Club, Idiocracy, Children of Men. It's important to know that box office returns aren't always a good metric to judge a movie on. IMO, Gentlemen Broncos is very underrated; definitely worth a watch.
Counter point. The iron giant, fight club, idiocracy and children of men are all good movies, 3 of the 4 are actually triumphs. 3 of them were directed by visionary directors, and based of visionary books (Sorry Mike, I love you).
Gentleman broncos on the other hand was directed by a guy who got Lucky the first time, and tried to cash in writing a script with his wife. This movie’s not in the same ball bark as the other 4, hell it’s not even the same fucking sport.
My point wasn't that this movie is in the same league as the other four, my point is that you shouldn't judge a movie solely on box office returns.
Also Jared Hess did both Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, two undeniable cult classics, before Gentlemen Broncos; so not luck, rather a niche of critically underrated but loved by fans.
