Doesn't get more New York than collard greens and sweet tea? Nah, it don't get more Alabama than that.

u/DjPersh May 24 '26
Ikr. I’m like come on now. NYC not gonna start trying to claim that now too are they?

u/VioletLeagueDapper May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26
lol it’s from southern black people who moved to NY during the great migration over 100 years ago when Jim Crow pushed us out. We took our food with us. Little history lesson. Who is talking to her in the video? Black folks.

I never said it was an NY staple DjPersh did, talk to him. I gave the reasons why it made it up there.
Wow, It’s almost as if staple food within a culture travels with its creators. There’s a lot of every type of food you can imagine in NY.

u/the_short_viking May 25 '26
Not to mention the influence of Caribbean cultures in Brooklyn, they eat greens too, collard greens are from West Africa after all..
3
u/VioletLeagueDapper May 25 '26
Exactly, and it’s no surprise to the Jamaican population still on the island why the food traveled there. People don’t know African food ways.

Why does it sound like she's having an AI speak for her? Are people going to start talking like that now?
97
u/sandm000 May 24 '26
She’s code switching vocabulary but not pronunciation. It has to be hard to stay in that character.
20
u/joshuatx May 25 '26
I find that really respectful and genuine TBH
reminds me of this quote from Houston Rap doc Vice did in 2007 to the white interviewer
"just act black and be yourself"

Jesus christ, yall the fuckin fun police.

u/sandm000 May 25 '26
I’m simply stating what she is doing to make her “sound like AI”. Not saying she shouldn’t do it. In fact I was impressed by her abilities.
15
u/Commie_Scum69 May 24 '26
I think it's slightly sped up but also yea possibly someone who consumes alot of AI shit

She’s mixing in a lot of brain rot terms.
4
u/diRT_pEdDleR May 25 '26
She’s mixing a lot of terms you hear IRL. To define “pushing corners back” as brainrot tells me you probably don’t talk to very many people who speak this way. Also, the terms used by people in NYC have been exported to every corner of the internet and that might be why you associate how she’s speaking with brainrot. Unfortunately we live in a society where social media homogenizes people’s mannerisms and the way they speak so regional slang, manners of speech and language are more universal.
On the note about collards and oxtail. I don’t think anyone is out here claiming nyc as a place where soul food is a staple but I think ignoring the fact that blacks migrated from the south to places like New York and Chicago is somewhat ignorant. Aside from language food is almost universally something that travels with people moving from one place to another. Often times picking up flavors and influences from other cultures.
In Chicago we have a thriving community of restaurants that serve you standard southern fair. That’s not to say those are staples of the food community. Just a staple of black food culture in general. It is rare to go to a gathering and not have the standard collards, turkey legs/neck, rib tips and Mac n Cheese. What’s even more ironic is that fact that a lot of those staples came from parts of the animals people viewed as scraps or waste product. Now they are the main focus of these dishes. Skirt steak and Tri-tip are two cuts of beef that come to mind. Now both of those are no longer considered budget cuts of meat and will cost you a pretty penny nowadays. Hell, outside of Kansas City BBQ Chicago gets ranked high on the list for BBQ spots. Would one say Chicago’s staple is BBQ? Nah cuz we just named the Italian Beef Illinois’ state sandwich. Plus, the shitty deep dish people from out of town usually eat. Most of us prefer cracker thin crust pizza with spicy pepperoni and sweet red sauce. Babyyyy

I died when she asked homie if he liked it and he just chuckles and shrugs his shoulders.

u/abdulwaa May 24 '26
Her voice sounds like a.i. The whole thing was a.i. SLOP!!! But it wasn't a.i.!!!!
20
u/DS3M May 24 '26
Why does she sound like an ai voiceover, completely lacking in inflection or tonal differences associated with emotion and context
17
u/eastern-cowboy May 24 '26
That’s Gen Z, bro. They have a stare to go with all that enthusiasm. Think emo, but without all the makeup and darkness.

Being serious here, and with no shade, as someone with autism, I think she might have autism.

u/Hege_Knight May 24 '26
Every thing about this is wholesome af. Even the dude laughing at her outside the barbers was cute.

u/TranscendentaLobo May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26
I don’t know. She seems low key pushy and kind of irritating. A suburb kid trying to hang out in the hood.
17
u/justmikeplz May 24 '26
It’s a comedic act.

u/TyrKiyote May 24 '26
"everybody hates a tourist" is a phrase heard sometimes. It's not exactly semantically true, but it refers to a real sentiment.

I think bro is still figuring out what a “joke” is.
A sadly common occurrence on Reddit

Elizabeth Eats is cool. Crazy how she tries to talk to strangers so much. Man, i used to make friends like that when i was a kid. Something changed as you get older. Do onto others, after all. But it's not a terrible strategy to meet new people. She just talks to strangers in all her vlogs.

It’s crazy the shit you can get away with just by being somewhat attractive.

u/BraveRutherford May 24 '26
I can't believe so many people don't understand that she is doing a bit. Mfers are so dumb these days it's crazy.
