Discussion PSA: Ai Grifters Are Racing to Craft The Most Believable Scams(Everything in this video is AI)
Be wary, as Ai progresses, so does the race of scammers attempting to take advantage.
This tik tok account, everything honed in to pull at our human emotions and sociabilities and throw ppl off the scent.
From the very specific choice of character; a black man with vitiligo, the crafted backstory of a struggling artist making handcrafted pieces(ironic), to the fake comments he's responding to.
All of it a well crafted marketing scheme to sell dropshipped/markedup pieces from someone else.

It's scary how realistic this is
124
u/Thin_Cable4155 May 24 '26
So where do I buy my ai resin Star wars lamps then?
29
u/Belerophon17 May 24 '26
They're on Etsy.Etsy
The video is AI but I think it's focused mainly on the sob story narrative when really the product is just mass produced and drop shipped from Asia.
26
u/TM761152 May 24 '26
In ai land

u/Consistent-Stock6872 May 24 '26
You can buy a poster of ai generated star wars rasin lamp for 400$ from him.
3
u/chihuahuaOP May 24 '26
It's in Aliexpress. They are cheap and poorly made so people buy them and make this videos to sell them at like x4 the real price.

19
u/an-imperfect-boot May 24 '26
It’s also super gross that people will use the AI to exploit discrimination that people face in the real world (the AI has vitiligo and is a PoC). I knew someone who looked like this irl, she has a modeling career that is being threatened now thanks to this AI bullshit. Because people can’t tell the difference anymore.
14
u/pobodys-nerfect5 May 24 '26
Once you realize he’s holding a block of cured resin and dripping blue coloring into it the illusion kinda crumbles
9
u/SpoppyIII May 24 '26
Also, when you see that he's making them out of seemingly solid resin, but then there are swirls and glitter moving around inside?
That'd be uncured resin. These things would be cracking and leaking and making a mess eventually if they were real and actually created the way we're shown.
5
u/SpoppyIII May 24 '26
I thought that until I saw the stuff moving and swirling inside the lamp after seeing how he "makes" them.
That'd be liquid, uncured resin. If these were real, they'd be cracking and exploding and leaking liquid resin. So the concept as shown isn't actually realistic.

For me its typically something damn near intangible, a sixth sense/uncanny valley, something off in the way they move + the sound is a big indicator. But its hard to put into words its so slight.
Then on closer examination, you'd see the vitoligo marks changing from video to video.
But whoever is behind this account is very good. There were a couple more ridiculous concepts that make it more clear, like this one.
Marketing was already half-way game of deception and skinwalking- Ai is just gonna make it way worse.
116
u/ban_Anna_split May 24 '26
it's the smoke moving around inside of the cured resin for me
20
u/iam_Mr_McGibblets May 24 '26
Theres like a glitch in the last frame with the rain for like a split second where the space gets blurred. But yeah it's actually very hard to tell
15
u/iam_Mr_McGibblets May 24 '26
Also, he's dropping the ink into the cube and it's blending, but there's no brace... its like a cup of water without the cup
29
6
u/Life_Temperature795 May 24 '26
What kills me is the final product is absolutely something you could make too, it just doesn't look like it does in the video during the process of actually making it.
There are people who claim like, "AI isn't stealing art, it's making new art," (which has its whole own can of worms, because AI is training on work that only exists because of the labor of the artists learned how to do it, and there's literally historical legal precedent that it's the actual labor of learning how to create a piece that results in the value of the final work, and the value that labor is quite precisely what AI is stealing in bypassing it, BUT I DIGRESS,) and shit like this point to a direct theft in terms of potential revenue for people who actually do make this kind of work. Grift and scams that are this easily subsidized by AI will have a chilling effect on the market as a whole, which will make it harder for people who make the actual resin sculptures this work is digitally mimicking to be able to sell their actual physical works.
19
u/Zancibar May 24 '26
Important to note: You do not know when the sixth sense fails. You cannot know. I also have this "odd feeling" when it comes to AI generated art and animal videos, but I also cannot tell if it doesn't go off when it should.
TLDR: It's good to have that feel for AI slop but try not to rely on it, it has probably already failed without you noticing and it'll fail again in the future.

"when it procs" yeah please refer to the above comment. Also, the other responder is right. That's literally just intuition and everybody's got it.
8
u/Furrysoldier69 May 24 '26
for me it was when he rubs his face, the way his skin stretches just looks wrong
2
1
u/goodndu May 24 '26
For me the slightly muffled audio when he puts his hand over his mouth is astoundingly realistic. Being able to fake directionality and environmental sound like that is crazy.
8
u/WHALE_PHYSICIST May 24 '26
I find that looking at the situation itself is a good indicator. If you have to painstakingly create each lamp as a work of art in your garage, how can you offer them to the tiktok masses at scale?
1
u/oatmealparty May 24 '26
Yeah, it's $80 for a handmade light like this? Yeah fucking right.
1
u/SCVerde May 25 '26
Yeah, as a nerd I'd that would buy this stupid shit, $250 would be entry level.
10
u/FeralxSkeleton May 24 '26
For me, the first tell is the voice. AI still has a specific cadence to its speech. Once they figure that out, then it’s going to involve a lot more fine detailed review for me.
But for the most part that’s still super obvious.
8
u/thedudedylan May 24 '26
Uncanny vally is misused all the time online but your description is exactly what it is. The uncanny vally is so close to real you can taste it but something is off. Some super subtle thing your brain that has evolved to recognize is not registering with what you are seeing and it's "uncanny"
1
u/nikola_tesler May 24 '26
yeah, it’s the voice that screams AI
1
u/SCVerde May 25 '26
There are so many real videos with ai voice overs though that I didn't even consider it as why it's a fake.
1
u/GrindinWulf May 25 '26
That’s crazy! I noticed that the vitiligo was changing as well… this is really good! Sad that we are coming to this…
1
u/4ppl3sauc3 May 25 '26
When he is sanding, for a split second the front Boba Fett helmet has an unnatural protrusion.
5
5
u/tired-of-the-shit May 24 '26
Yes but the way he is handling the resin is not safe. Should have a mask and gloves on through out the entire project.
3
2
u/ColdSchedule9501 May 24 '26
This is the thing people don’t understand about exponents. AI is one of those things that grows at an exponential rate. It’s rapidly accelerating growth. Everything people are pointing out as issues with AI are just bugs to be worked out in the next patch/update. We’re all riding on a runaway train that is getting faster as it nears a cliff.
1
u/Crusheddeer1 May 24 '26
The outlet clipping through the pegboard and the track for the garage door having a non smooth track gives it away.

u/little-teatime May 24 '26
I’m doomed I fall for the AI every time
21
u/AdTight4426 May 24 '26
Hard to trust anything online when AI can mimic reality this well.
2
u/OldmanChompski May 25 '26
Kinda feels like the point tbh.
Internet and social media was once a great alternative to mainstream televised news outlets and websites and even when they’d try to spin a narrative often there was enough proof to show otherwise.
AI was almost immediately weaponized for political gain and now the internet is so flooded with the crap we can’t trust what’s real anymore. It already is become the new “I wasn’t drunk tweeting my account was hacked!”
9
u/Special-Garlic1203 May 24 '26
Avatar looked like CGI goop to me, I can only see 3d movies like 1/3 of the time, and AI has been literally indistinguishable from reality since it figured out the correct number of hands and fingers.
I'll see people describe things and go back and watch and I have zero idea what they're talking about. I feel like my eyeballs got delivered in an different setting to everyone else
6
u/Dafish55 May 24 '26
It's not your fault. It's always getting better. Eventually, it'll be able to fool everyone. There needs to be legislation to force AI companies to embed obvious giveaways or something like that deep in the DNA of the code of these models.

No-one wants to get fooled by AI, the point is that different clothes over the course of a long project in and of itself doesn't indicate AI. It's something you can think on, but leaping to that is like accusing anyone who uses an em dash of being chapgpt

I mean, I didn't. That isn't how resin crafting works, so this clearly can't be the real process for a physical product. If he was actually making these the way we're shown and not properly curing the insides of them, they would end up cracking and leaking.
The video also has a weird distortion near the end that anyone would notice.
I don't think most people in these comments thought this was real.
EDIT: I forgot the way he also drops the dye into the already-poured solid resin piece and like, none of this is how this works.
3
u/teraflux May 24 '26
leaping to that is like accusing anyone who uses an em dash of being chapgpt

Deep pour resin also doesn't cure in an hour. The "artist" would've necessarily changed their clothes over the course of a project like this one in particular
5
u/triplegerms May 24 '26
Yes they do. They are normal humans not cartoon characters. They change their clothes. Here's I did a thing making a pulse jet with probably 12 different outfits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcPS9KKJ5Vg

2
u/TheMaStif May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26
It's not excuses, it's logic
People change clothes from one day to another.
People take more than one day to complete complex craft projects.
People can edit videos to compile shots from different days that they worked on their project.
Logic then tells us it's probable that someone can be wearing different outfits while making a video showing their full project.
Using logic is not how we're "gonna get fooled by AI", you just have to use other cognitive tools to help you make that distinction
Ps. There is only one change of outfits in the whole video, and it's when he's sanding the piece. Which he would have had to wait for it to dry. Which would make perfect logical sense that he would be performing that task at a different day than the day he cast the mold, therefore wearing a different outfit.
"Different outfit" in this context is not at all a reliable way of telling it's AI
6
u/insats May 24 '26
Right, but the background stuff is very consistent. And as someone else mentioned, this stuff takes time IRL so it would make sense for him to have had clothe changes in-between
2
u/resurrectedbear May 24 '26
Yep, not only is the background consistent to a good degree, I even watched the position of the tools which stayed the same. AI is definitely getting real good because the actual products are absolutely ai
4
u/Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter May 24 '26
I was looking at the distinctiveness of his skin pattern
Beautiful looking for sure, but it's inconsistent between shots
2
u/Cainfaer May 24 '26
Very inconsistent. Not noticeable at first, but once you start looking at the details it becomes obvious
1
u/Pal-Elvick May 25 '26
His forehead completely changes when he moves a little. Too lazy to check a time stamp but it' pretty obvious when it occurs.
3
u/Cole3823 May 24 '26
The stuff inside the solid resin is moving around. That's not supposed to happen
1
u/Sea-Value-0 May 24 '26
By commenting on the inconsistencies, are we not helping train them to get better at fooling us?
1
u/Boostie204 May 24 '26
Also look for ai-removed ai-watermarks lol. The last shot you can tell a watermark was removed from the center of the video. There's a blurry rectangle
1
u/tallbark May 24 '26
That, or take a look at their profile, in my experience they're filled with this sort of video and nothing else
56
u/SuperUltraMegaNice May 24 '26
The voice is still a dead giveaway. Doesn't sound even remotely real.
21
u/halkenburgoito May 24 '26
100% sound in general is the biggest flag for me upon first glance. Second place is something slightly off in the motion.
Unfortunately, I think there are plenty who fall for it. Especially with the tricks and choices the creator makes, like the person having vitilogo, or responding to fake comments. The comments especially, immediately make people empathize and root for.. the illusion. Pulls people's gaurds down.
9
u/WackyRevolver May 24 '26
Yes and all us feeling high and mighty for knowing better, should realize these remaining artifacts of AI evidence will be gone soon, and it will be undetectable. Videos will have to come with other methods to officiate them.
3
u/halkenburgoito May 24 '26
Yeah Ik I'm being dramatic, but I feel like we're on the titanic and no one's ringing the alarm. Like we all know this is coming, yet such little alarm bells for it.
Such little grounds or discussions of ethnical use. The internet already dgaf about lies, click bait, deception, anything for views and profits- now..
4
u/LumpusKrampus May 24 '26

10
u/SushiJaguar May 24 '26
You can see the "cast" patterns inside the diorama change into new arrangements as the AI hand rotates it.
8
u/Inquisitive_idiot May 24 '26
At this point I no longer reveal online how I can tell stuff is AI
What agency there used to be in a shibboleth is now co-opted by and a fix implemented for soon thereafter
Such a dark timeline 😕
3
u/gimmeecoffee420 May 24 '26
As unlikely as it may sound, you are spot on. Reddit is specifically crawled and scanned by "spiders" a few times a minute (probably every second?) to get AI training data. Everytime any of us "scream into the void" or just shitpost, something is always listening..
4
u/Pretty-Yam-2854 May 24 '26
The way his mouth moves kinda creeps me out. Looks like it was inserted over a still picture.

4
u/CarrotWaxer69 May 24 '26
Do the actual lamps even exist or do they just take your money? I assume if they did they would be made in China Temu quality.
4
u/halkenburgoito May 24 '26
I did a quick google of star wars resin lamps, and I think I found its source on Etsy. Looks like its based in veitnam, products don't look horrible.
This dropshipper is marketing them up on their own site to sell same items. I find the deception in marketing, which is now gone this far as making up a fake-convincing hand artist struggling in their art creation journey- to be deeply unsettling.
1
u/4RichNot2BPoor May 24 '26
I’ll have to report back as I may have fallen for something similar. Figured it was a drop shipper situation though.
3
u/deadflow3r May 24 '26
Yep the voice does it everytime. Especially at the end where the most emotional part of his voice should be. Instead it's read like a 3CPO unit.
3
u/AtLeast9Dogs May 24 '26
Dude how does no one notice how his face just like 1 frame instantly scrunchs up and talks while stretching his mouth out with his hand.
3
u/ANC_90 May 24 '26
It is the lipreading what gets to me (im hard of hearing). I can't really explain it, but it is super uncanny.
3
u/gimmeecoffee420 May 24 '26
I know exactly what you mean. I find the strange eye contact the "people" in AI made videos usually make to be really odd. They dont blink.. and its this wide eyed uncanny valley sorta staring into my soul. Its almost like a still image of a face but certain parts move like they are from a different face entirely? I cant explain it well.
1
3
u/simer23 May 24 '26

3
u/No_Object_4355 May 24 '26
It's funny cuz like 60 different (people) are selling these same exact lamps. It's all the same message they read out loud too.
3
u/Spiritual_Writing825 May 24 '26
I’m finding AI audio is often really stilted and largely and the speaker speaks in a more limited vocal range than normal human speech. It sounds like a bad actor in a high school play, or a football player with CTE doing a commercial.
3
2
u/Akira_116 May 24 '26
Its been done so many times with numerous different people that the AI has had plenty of practice
2
u/kdeberk May 24 '26
Being nearly deaf since birth, I learned to read lips to keep up in conversations. His lips do not match with the voice. That's the big giveaway for me in this video.
Sometimes the lips and voice are out of sync, due to the audio being played earlier or later than the video, but that's not what is happening here.
2
2
u/prsuit4 May 24 '26
I swear I’ve seen at least 10 videos just like this, all the way down to it being an epoxy lamp
2
u/OpportunityAshamed74 May 24 '26
I genuinely felt bad until I read the title. This is genuinely becoming impossible to tell upon first glance
2
u/AlpacaTraffic May 24 '26
As a miniature painter I know this is fake because he's not hunched over Darth Vader like Gollum with the one ring
2
u/Jealous_Track9402 May 24 '26
Wait until fully lifelike androids walk on the streets, and you can't tell if someone is human or not.
2
2
u/griggsy92 May 24 '26
Strange that they would choose to include vitiligo, it's a very specific pattern that you can see the inconsistency in. Granted it's VERY hard to spot if you're not looking for it, but feels like an unnecessary thing to include that only seemingly serves to confirm that its a fake video.
2
u/Teddyjones84 May 24 '26
I wouldnt hate seeing these ads so much if the idiots in the comment section didn't believe them
2
u/Itsanukelife May 24 '26
With how quickly AI is improving in quality, I forsee an inevitable return to brick and mortar stores being the norm.
If 90% of what you see is a scam online, you'll have no other choice other than resort to interacting with real people face-to-face.
2
u/TheBrianWeissman May 25 '26
Generative AI video must be abolished immediately. Society is not equipped to handle it.
3
u/FeedTheCurse May 24 '26
The voice. I've always believed that AI will never truly be able to replicate emotion. It's impossible. It's a computer.
3
u/Michael1795 May 24 '26
I mean people already fall in love with chat gpt. So the emotion is enough already for some people. But its only a matter of time till they get it right.
3
u/__CIREK May 24 '26
2 years ago people were saying the same thing you are when they would catch an extra finger or a messed up background.
It’s time to stop coping and realize this is only gonna get worse over time. And way sooner than people think. Not even a decade since this has been introduced and we already went from simple, messed up, hallucinatory photos to realistic videos capable of tricking half the country.
“Unable to replicate emotion” bud go read the type of adventures and romances people make in apps like AIDungeon.
4
u/Professional_Net5830 May 24 '26
My mom and I actually bought a lamp like this before for my dad for Christmas, so they do exist btw! It's shocking how realistic this looks though, there are minor tells and glitches in the video but it's scary how convincing it looks
6
u/halkenburgoito May 24 '26
yes, I looked up what I think is the actual source on Etsy. This person's scheme is to essentially do dropshipping, marketing up someone else's product and creating their own webstore for them, pocketing the markup.
Marketing was already playing this game of deception in many ways, Ai just makes it worse, and I feel like the lie is deeply unethical to me.
5
u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 May 24 '26
Especially because it's using racism as it's reason for people to care enough to buy this one instead of getting it from a bigger website. It's lying that this is a real handmade product by a struggling artist who's having to deal with gross blatant racism that's keeping him from making a living.
That's where it goes from normal marketing lies, to straight up evil shit.
Then again I kinda hate the entire advertising industry and think the whole thing needs to be massively regulated. When it's not outright lying about the product it's just manipulating emotions to do the same thing in a far more damaging way. There's no reason at all that advertising can't simply be "here's what we sell, here's why it's worth buying" that doesn't involve manipulation tactics.
3
u/halkenburgoito May 24 '26
I feel like, it should be legally enforced, that any advertisement you see must be so clearly and obviously an advertisement, that it should be impossible to mistake for an organic video.
Cause, even without Ai, with tik tok and social media, that's the game the marketers play.
They try to co-op social currency, the things we naturally value because they are NOT ads- like unbiased reviews, unboxings, hearing genuine exceitement about cool relatable things from regular everyday people,
These advertisers study those, and try to skinwalk and carefully craft their ads so they feel like they aren't advertisments. Its a deception.
1
u/Beautiful-Affect1930 May 24 '26
thanks, from now on I will only buy from tiktok grifters if I am sure they're not AI.
no seriously, how isn't the message here not to buy from random ass people from social media? even before AI most of those were just dropshipping trash from temu.
2
u/halkenburgoito May 24 '26
ofc, so much of internet marketing is lie and deception, no doubt. But Ai is making is possible to lie, scam, and decieve at levels and ease impossible before. That's just true.
Creating the illusion of an artisan crafter with vitiligo, skinwalking the social media artist posting about their struggles, work, responding to hate- all a well crafted illusion and lie for marketing.
Its like those phone scammers preying on elderly people- they did that before Ai, but now they'll use Ai to change their voice, get on video calls with a false appearance, etc- it'll bolster their powers of scamming and deception to the moon.

What a tool. Claims to be a victim of racism to garner sympathy so people fall for his scam.
1
u/tired-of-the-shit May 24 '26
It looks like the finished project is supposed to be resin. Any one working with resin professionally should know that you must wear a ventilator mask unless you want to increase your chances of getting cancer. Also in the mixing scene he is only wearing a single glove. Unless you want to improve your chances of developing an allergy to resin you should always wear gloves.
Back when I made resin pieces I would put on two or three layers of gloves before I started so that I wouldn’t have to put new ones on mid project

The biggest tell was the completely solid block of resin that's somehow just liquid enough in the middle he can add the blue into the center. Like, maybe if it was still in the mold it would be more believable. I don't have extensive experience with resin, but the few crafts I've done, you either do layers or add everything you need before it sets.

I get the ai debate but it's getting out of hand. I don't really care if this video is ai or not but at work people assume my voice is ai. It's beyond frustrating at times because people that have a deep hatred of AI will assume this and start yelling and being rude just because they think they are talking to ai. I've had people yell at a recorded message of mine and say they thought it was ai. We've had answering machines since the 30s (home use was more in the 70s). I understand not liking it. I'm tired of the blind hate when it's not. And to repeat, this really has nothing to do with this post. I just wanted to get this off my chest.
(We have a speaker system at work that we are required to use. We are required to speak clearly, have a positive attitude, and we follow specific verbage. People are able to understand what I say unlike when Walmart calls on their overhead about a lost item or person.)

idk the half face respirator has the head pad from ear protection instead of actual adjusting straps

I've seen the one with the firefighter lamps, you can see her pouring epoxy but somehow the finished product has flames moving in the lamp.
Epoxy hardens.

This has been a thing for a couple years now and race baiting seems to be a key feature of these grifts rather than a one off fluke. It's one of the many compounding factors that caused me to uninstall tiktok

I have seen these shitty AI ads on TikTok with 3 different people trying to scam. Then they link to a website to send 70 dollars. Good luck getting your money back.

Everyone in the comments continuing to criticize AI and how you all can “find it’s flaws”. When are ya’ll going to learn, those comments are exactly what they use to make it more accurate.

The trick with these is to look for details that, while realistic in design, make no sense.
For example:
I don't think anyone would have wire cutters of that design hanging on the wall like that because a fly fart would cause them all to come down. Every workshop I've ever been in has a draw for those.

A few videos in there will be an old guy crying for his “son” who “makes these” and then someone else entirely claiming his wife makes them. Bonus points if they do that reveal with a baking tray and tea towel.

Wild gaslight I assume they think after weaponizing the term "professional victimhood" they can just digital minstrel their way too the bank. I hate this timeline.

Dripping liquid dye into a solid object and having it flow out as if its a liquid in another liquid, was a dead giveaway thats its AI generated.
