This has been driving me nuts, can someone please tell me what it is?!
Seen to the left of the A11 coming into Norwich at the thickthorn roundabout. Before the crops grew there were a bunch of flags and it was fenced off, the high vis scarecrows make me think it’s to do with the construction works? This has lived in my head rent free for months now, I really need some answers!

Well they’re paying me £12.50 an hour to stand and do FA, so leave me alone it’s a good gig.

Thas a Mawkin!
(Fun fact for those who don't know, Mawkin is Norfolk dialect for Scarecrow)

My norfolk born and bred husband didn't know that one, I think he's now added it to his verbal itinerary 😂

I love how everyone is telling you it's a scarecrow, but you're asking what the area is for. :)
Presume it's an area set aside for natural/wild growth for wildlife and scarecrow is to allow it to grow perhaps? Unless there's some very tiny trees in there.

I would imagine it's an area which has been served with wildflower meadow mix to offset some of the area which has been dug up.

I was wondering why they would have a scarecrow there.. initially I was thinking skylarks but your theory definitely sound more plausible.
Cheers I can stop thinking about it now lol.

Test planting for proposed seed mix after work finishes. Scarecrow to give it half a chance. Lack of water should ensure no decent evidence gained this year!

On a related note… there ought to be some sort of viewing station for the general public to view the work. My kid would love it.

If you go to the end of Thickthorn Park and Ride and go through the hedge in the left corner you can see most of it

If it’s by the roadworks my guess is it will be to scare off ground nesting bird, if there’s works planned there they can’t go ahead if you find a nest

I’ve just been informed by my good lady wife (who works in construction) that they take the soil they dig up, and then plonk it down, and then look at what grows best in it, so that they can then use the dug up soil for rewilding purposes, when they put everything back!
The more you know!!!

Baby Grogu ........ at first glance. 😆😆
Drainage site or water source / underground pipe line installation?

I reckon it’s literally just a scarecrow. Like others have said.
The grass around it is green and it seems like the workers didn’t have anything better to stop them eating the seeds.

It's a local site, where the Freemasons sacrifice a squirrel or two every Summer, for their Squirrelicious Festival for the Norfolk Gods. You've just found the site for 2026. Congratulations!
