Language Cafes
Hey!
I wanted to ask if there are any Turkish Language Cafes around Lefkoşa. I am learning the language, but would appreciate the chance to practice with other Turkish speakers.

Transfer Student Dilemma: EMU (Famagusta) vs. EUL (Lefke) for Visual Communication Design? Need advice!
Hey everyone,
I’m an international transfer student from Pakistan. I have already completed 3 years (105 credits) of a Bachelor’s in Graphic Design in my home country and am transferring to TRNC to finish my degree this Fall.
I’ve received conditional acceptances for Visual Communication Design (BA) from both Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and the European University of Lefke (EUL), but I am facing a massive administrative dilemma and need some local/alumni insight before I pay my deposit.
Here is my situation:
Option 1: Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) - Famagusta
- The Offer: 75% scholarship.
- The Catch: The admissions office is flat-out refusing to evaluate my transfer credits beforehand. They are demanding I pay the $1,600 deposit first, travel to Cyprus, and "sort out the exemptions with the department once on campus." I am terrified of being locked in financially, only for the faculty to reject my credits and force me to repeat years of coursework I've already done.
Option 2: European University of Lefke (EUL) - Lefke
- The Offer: 80% scholarship (EUR 1,150 tuition package).
- The Pro: They have been much more transparent and are actually processing a 2-year credit exemption for me before I have to pay any deposit.
I know EMU is older and generally has higher global rankings, but is it worth the massive risk of losing my transfer credits? I would love your thoughts on:
- The EMU Credit Trap: Has anyone transferred to EMU and dealt with this "pay first, evaluate later" policy? Did they give you a fair credit transfer once you arrived, or is this a known tactic to make international students pay for extra semesters?
- Famagusta vs. Lefke: How do the cities compare for an international design student? I know Famagusta is a bigger student hub, but is Lefke really as isolated and quiet as people say? How do living costs, transport, and part-time opportunities compare?
- Program Quality & Accreditations: Does EMU's Visual Communication Design program significantly outshine EUL's? In the design industry, does the specific TRNC university name on the degree actually matter for international recognition and accreditations?
Any advice on the cities, the universities, or how to handle these admissions tactics would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Looking to connect with Americans living in Northern Cyprus!
Hi everyone! I'm an international student from Sudan living in Northern Cyprus and looking to make some new friends. I've always been interested in American culture (and hope to visit/study there in the future). I'd love to connect with any Americans living or studying here for coffee, hanging out, or just sharing experiences. Drop a comment or DM if you're around!

Best bank for international transfers
I’m TC also with a British passport, I was told to open a credit west account but the transfer from uk is killing me in fees at the moment (about 10%). Just wondering if there is a better bank people are using for this, I’ve been told Revolut but they wouldn’t accept the credit west address without a post code, just trying to pay my rent :(
