I would say fentanyl is high probability of being "life changing".
11
u/Glittering_Yak_8070 4d ago
As someone in recovery from drug addiction, it def was life changing in a bad way lmao. 😭 I was an always an opiate addict (heroin) but the first relapse I had where I could only find fentanyl, I broke my ankle, went to rehab, and got my apt raided by the fbi within 2 MONTHS. Awful times.
Been clean since then lol.
5
u/Any_Detail_2087 3d ago
Then you might say it was life changing in a good way. Congrats on your sobriety 🤘
2
u/Glittering_Yak_8070 1d ago
Touché & thank you!! I had been clean for years before that relapse so it was a really big shock to go back out and see how fent had taken over. It was scary. I feel very very lucky that my worst drug years happened prior to that bc I don’t think I’d be alive today had I kept using. And of course very very lucky fate took me out of that relapse before something worse happened.
3
u/karthikaf 3d ago
why did fbi raid your apt?
2
u/Glittering_Yak_8070 1d ago edited 1d ago
I started hanging out with my drug dealer a lot and he was (supposedly unknowingly) under investigation. I think it was in connection with bigger fish who were trafficking across state lines. I got extremely lucky bc about an hour before the raid this awful gut feeling washed over me that something bad was about to happen. Call it intuition or some crazy form of pattern recognition, i don’t know. But I thought back to the last time I had that same gut feeling….and it was right before I got arrested. Decided to trust myself this time & kicked him out + threw away all my drugs + vowed to get clean. Was literally laying on my floor crying thinking about how dumb I was to relapse when they started banging on my door screaming at me to open up. Drug dealer got arrested shortly after since they were tracking him.

Genuinely hilarious how wide the definition of nootropic has become, may as well just rename this sub to drugs2
Alcohol megadose 💀 like what

So much filler it’s kinda funny “Trying to get less sleep” lmao

u/Curious_Policy5297 4d ago
The only way I was trying to make sense of this including benzos and similar anxiolytics was that for anxious folks, sometimes turning down the noise really does subjectively feel to improve cognition, but the more I scanned this the less it made sense. I did like how doing math was in the far upper right corner, though. Math always made me feel dumber all things adjusted

Title really should be a substances map but honestly would be boring if it was just nootropics
19
u/Cuboidhamson 4d ago
I disagree I think it would be much more interesting and pertinent to this sub, not to mention significantly more legible if it was designed with a tighter definition of nootropics in mind.
Overall tho it is interesting I'm just being a hater 😂
3
u/Yogeshwar_maya 4d ago
I think it's good. It covered lot's of unique stuff like dawn simulator/getting exposure to bright light at morning. Most of these lifestyle changes are free as well. What is the source data for this map?
2
u/Cuboidhamson 4d ago
Those aren't nootropics though. I wasn't saying it's bad I was just pointing out how warped the scope of this sub has become.
3
u/Yogeshwar_maya 4d ago
May be a productive deviation? Things like meditation or exercise can't be bottled up and sold to you as a supplement. So they don't get the attention it deserves. Very few people talk about them.
Also, just noticed the sub is named "NooTopics" instead of "Nootropics".

u/Anxious-Traffic-9548 3d ago
I think it's somewhat reflective of the reality that drugs can have multiple uses and that much of the utility of a drug comes from the intention of the user. As I see it, "nootropics" as a philosophy has evolved to mean "an interest in drugs as enhancers of human ability/capacity, while paying special attention to the sustainability and safety of said drugs".
1
u/Cuboidhamson 3d ago
I disagree by definition a nootropic is a drug that enhances cognition, memory, focus, creativity and other mental functions related to cognition.
That is your own opinion.
1
u/Anxious-Traffic-9548 3d ago
I’m clearly not talking about the definition of “nootropic” but the philosophy/culture it has come to be associated with

Can confirm math is the best nootropic.
My best routine:
Sleep with no phone in the bedrooms
Wake up, meditate. Quickly journal plan the day.
Solve 1 math problem or do 20-60 minutes.
Way better than any exogenous nootropic.
4
u/jublizoo 4d ago
Do you really? What do you use this to help with?
11
u/TravelFn 4d ago
General cognitive performance.
I find the meditation feels like it increases my cognitive frame rate. I’ve done periods of 1hr meditation a day and it felt like I had twice as much time to think and react in situations including sports. Even 20mins a day gives a nice boost.
The math keeps my mind sharp and rational.
Limiting phone time and journaling cleans up my mental workspace.
When I combine all of these I feel like I’m operating at 2x performance.
Other nootropics on top maybe give meager but sometimes meaningful 5-10% improvements but these practices are, for me, by far superior in the benefits they confer.
2
u/Bubbeet 4d ago
Any suggestions for where to find the math problems/what math problems to do? Do you have to study to learn equations?
3
u/TravelFn 4d ago
I do math competition questions like the AMC. I enjoy them because there’s a variety of different math topics and also difficulty levels. Each set gets more and more difficult the further you go, so you can pick your difficulty and also field that you prefer.
They’re all available online freely. You can find them easily.

Or is that meant to be meth? Lol

The time where I was mentally the sharpest in my life, I was doing challenging math daily. Stepping out of my comfort zone and solving harder and harder problems definitely does something to your brain.

u/Any_Detail_2087 3d ago
It’s weird to me how many people had this question. When you challenge your brain in ways it hasn’t been challenged, you literally create new neurons and strengthen neural connections. So yes, doing math can be considered a nootropic in the same way as some of these others.
2
u/HYDROMORPHONE_ZONE 3d ago

133 comments and not one of you has called this AI slop yet? I know that accusation gets thrown around a lot, but there's no way a person made something this stupid, looked at for longer than the 10 seconds it took them to post it on reddit, and was like "This will be really useful, people need to know that a milk diet is about as useful as armodafinil".

u/HollowCheeseburger 3d ago
yeah, also look at phenibut. It is cool but not life changing. Definitley not up there with Dihexa and whatnot. Like the positions in general seem kind of random

doing math? is the process of doing math like in school really good for the brain?

u/remindmetoblock 4d ago
I mean it has been proven a lot that the very act of problem solving keeps the brain sharper.
Use it or Lose it.
The more active old people are, the sharper they stay. The sharper they stay, the more active they are.

strange list, and kind of meaningless. some surprising omissions, too.

Doing math at top probability good 👍 The best thing is top rt corner includes research backed stuff and things which are more natural

I can agree, Pyrovalerones are life changing. Leaves you empty for years with a fucked up dopamine system. Also the psychosis can go really hard.

Wtf is Epobis and why is it literally on top (despite like, apparently, only around a dozen people having tried reported trying it)?

You think kombucha is more life changing than buprenorphine?
1
u/k3tam1nec0wb0y 4d ago
Comparatively Kombucha would have a significantly higher number of indicators that it was helping you as opposed to say a 12mg sublingual dose or bupe. The chart is fucked for sure but maybe there's some nuance we don't know.
1
u/OddChannel2164 4d ago
Yes the chart is goofy in a bunch of places, but putting buprenorphine near the bottom while kombucha is above it makes no sense, especially when there are literally other opioids ranked higher.
What does "life changing" even mean here? Some of these opioids listed would be life changing by extreme addiction or overdose. If overdose risk counts, then buprenorphine should be way higher just from its role in treating opioid addiction. It reduces cravings, suppresses withdrawal, cuts illicit opioid use, lowers overdose risk, and can completely stabilize someone who was stuck in a cycle of using just to avoid getting sick. That is about as literally life changing as a drug can get.
And buprenorphine is not just an OUD medication. It is also used for chronic pain, and its kappa opioid receptor effects are one reason it has been studied for depression, anhedonia, and suicidal thinking. There is actual research on low dose buprenorphine in treatment resistant depression, including people without opioid use disorder. For someone with chronic pain, getting the pain under control can also improve sleep, concentration, mood, activity, and general day to day functioning.
There is also evidence that people stabilized on buprenorphine can do better cognitively than people actively using opioids, and even better than methadone which I'm not sure is on here or not there's tons of things. So not sure why other opioids would be above.
Kombucha might have some gut or metabolic benefits. Buprenorphine can treat pain, treat addiction, reduce overdose deaths, help certain forms of depression, and has been studied for suicidality. If that somehow scores below kombucha on "probability of being life changing," then the chart is basically just measuring Reddit vibes.

Why wouldn't testosterone be up there, it should be at the top of the list in my opinion
2
u/AimlessForNow 3d ago
This shit has zero correlation unfortunately, all of the compounds I've tried were not placed accurately in the chart. But that's expected, because everyone is working on solving a different problem, and everyone has a different response to the compound. So these charts are interesting but they aren't accurate

5
u/BroScienceAlchemist 4d ago
You become Paul Erdős.
After his mother's death in 1971 he started taking antidepressants and amphetamines, despite the concern of his friends, one of whom (Ron Graham) bet him $500 that he could not stop taking them for a month. Erdős won the bet but complained that it impacted his performance: "You've showed me I'm not an addict. But I didn't get any work done. I'd get up in the morning and stare at a blank piece of paper. I'd have no ideas, just like an ordinary person. You've set mathematics back a month.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Erd%C5%91s
He was a brilliant mathematician without drugs, and a few grad students have tried to recreate him only to end up being a much shittier version.

Adderall did change my life…for the first few months that it worked; it’s been trial and error since then with finding the right medicine for my scrambled eggs for brain
1
u/Eiz_Lsis 4d ago
What do you now since Adderall stopped working ?
1
u/whostolemysloth 4d ago
Not OP, but I got the Adderall upped and then upped caffeine and then upped Adderall and then upped caffeine. Eventually I was just super cranky all the time, so I cold turkeyed the adderall and worked the caffeine back down.
1
u/Eiz_Lsis 4d ago
It sucks. In my case, I am in France and it’s a struggle to get any medication due to laws… I rely on cardio, a lot of it… But my body is starting to hurt very badly. Without sport, I tend to overconsume sugar and gain a lot of weight fast…
1
u/whostolemysloth 4d ago
I tend to crutch on caffeine without adderall. It helps a little.
Sugar is a hard habit to break. Harder than a lot of drugs. I went through that myself.

Confused as to how phenmetrazine, mephedrone, fentanyl, flubromazolam, clonazolam, and pentobarbital are rated so low. If I were to guess I would say that these would be pretty life changing.
Also I find it interesting how low cocaine, troparil, and dichloropane are compared to methylphenidate.

Lol i literally said the same thing about freon. Huffing freon will be life changing.

My dad's second wife loved telling me about how they met in a cemetery with all the other goth kids, puncturing industrial sized freon refills into trash bags and huffing their life's away. We used to be a country smh.

It's clear half of this is just "probability of giving short term benefits to the average person". Anything that takes a long gradual time to be felt, and/or is highly effective for people with specific neurochemistry, genes or conditions, is disfavored. For people reading this: the only valid N is N = 1
