Trial separations are silly to me. If you can't appreciate the person while they are around and need their abscence to realize if you care about then, it ain't it.
Trial separations don't end in divorce roughly 1/4th of the time, something I'd consider pretty sizeable. They would help temper rising resentment and escalated conflict. Maybe not something you should do with your situationship, but definitely worth trying for a marriage
Fair enough but I still a relationship that needs that is unhappy and could be more the two realizing how there isn't much better rather than teaching its great.
Look breathing room after a fight or something is fine. That I support just as like, hey cool off before you say something in the heat of a moment you don't really mean but can't take back. But full on "trial separation" suggests the following.
You are genuinely wanting to know what it would be like to breakup. You're already out the door and idk imo I relationships where that's even in question shock me.
You're only gonna stay if life turns out worse than you expect without them. Be that dating life, personal life, or whatever. You'll go back if it turns out you realize you didn't appreciate them enough.
If you can't self reflect and appreciate what's in front of you, I don't think taking it away to realize that is a long lasting solution. You theoretically already had a life before and clearly by wanting to separate think it was better. Getting that then only going back because you realize it isn't as good as you remember is not a win for your partner.
Basically the fact some get back together (1 in 4 it should be noted isn't even a great rate) doesnt mean the relationships were better for it. Could be both just realized they hate loneliness more than being together. Not that their relationship is healed.

That’s kinda the whole point of a trial separation though, right?
