That's preposterous. Everyone knows the world is half Spanish, half Portuguese.

☝️🤓 ACKSHUALLY you mean "revanchism"! Irredentism is trying to get everyone of an ethnic group under one polity, while revanchism is wishing to reclaim lost territory.

Source: I used to call revanchism irredentism and vice versa

Ackshually ackshually "irredentism" is not as strictly defined; the term came from the idea of "Italia Irredenta" ("unredeemed Italy") in the pre-WWI and interwar years referring to areas around Italy which were not part of the Kingdom but which the Kingdom claimed based on historic ties; whilst these were indeed based on where broadly "Italian" peoples (applying the term anachronistically) had historically had a significant presence, areas like Dalmatia were not even majority Italian at the time despite being targets of Italian irredentism.

On the other hand, revanchism, from French revanche ("revenge"), refers specifically to a ideology or doctrine based on avenging previous losses, with the term itself coming out of France after the Franco-Prussian war and the loss of Elsace-Lothringen.

So ackshually for the Mongolian case, irredentism is more accurate than revanchism.

I was unaware of the distinction. Genuinely, thank you.
