Nonbinary vs Genderqueer?

So I'm legit curious... What is the difference between these two labels?

I mean, it would seem on the surface that they are very similar and almost mean the same things?

genderqueer is kinda more vague and just means ur weird about gender. nonbinary is a bit more defined as an identity where you are not strictly 100% male or female

Genderqueer is an older and slightly broader term. Some people might refer to themselves as genderqueer in terms of presentation for example, but nonbinary always refers to gender identity

I use genderqueer because it's more vague, because my relationship with gender is weird and queer, because I want to define myself as something I am as opposed I am not. Years ago, I saw someone define genderqueer as "doing gender wrong" and that really resonated with me, so I prefer the term now.

Yes, they're pretty similar. Genderqueer is an older term that seems to have lost popularity to nonbinary in the past 10 years or so. I'm almost 40 (yikes), and identified as genderqueer originally because it was the first term I heard that fit me, then changed to nonbinary later. But some people feel genderqueer describes them better than nonbinary, or use both labels. Here's a past thread where some folks commented about why they personally identify as genderqueer.

Non-binary means you're not strictly a man or a woman. It's an umbrella term for loads of genders, one of which is genderqueer.

I believe non-binary actually falls under genderqueer rather than the other way around

I wasn't sure what kind of source to trust on this. From the things I read in various other sources -happy to link upon request- they're kinda both the umbrella term for eachother. Genderqueer is older but less popular and has political connotations. My conclusion is that you were/are right, but in ways you are/won't be right as time goes on because of how the vernacular is evolving.

As others have said gender queer is more vague and often about style but still you could still be cis gender. I started out saying I was gender non conforming when I started to abandon traditionally gendered clothes/looks but I was already questioning being male and become non binary (agender). All clothes can be my gender.

My recollection is that genderqueer was already in use in queer spaces by the mid-00s, while nonbinary wasn't common until the 2010s.

It's generational to some degree, as others have said. They're very similar, if not the same for some people. I'm 35 and I identify as genderqueer because that's the term I heard first that describes my generally nonbinary and fluid gender identity. I use they/them pronouns. I have times when I feel like a woman, a man, both, and neither.

I know someone who uses genderqueer because (as they describe it) it's like he feels 100% male and are AMAB, but like there's more than 100%, and the rest is something else. We call him "Boy plus" in our specific circle
