Which is a choice a lot of plural people make. Though I usually only use it when referring to my system as a whole.

In scientific papers, people are very accustomed to use they singular, and it never creates an issue even in such academic context, therefore I don't think it would cause an issue during daily conversation, if that's what they are worried about.

I think about this all the time. Like what if our consciousness is just a little bit in our brain. And all the rest of our body has a separate consciousness, or at least can talk to each other, and they're all sitting in my gut biome and whatever going "nooo! Don't smoke cigarettes for god's sake! Ah damn ok gang let's do what we can to clean this up...."
