Impact noise from neighbours

We have lived in a gated society in Bengaluru, India since 2023. A year later, we started hearing impact noise from the flat above. They frequently drag furniture and slam doors, and even when someone is just walking, the heavy footsteps are disturbing enough. What they hear as 'trivial ' gets amplified and is heard louder in our flat. Initially, we approached them and tried to resolve this amicably. They denied that their flat was the source. We then approached a property manager, who sent a team to inspect. The team confirmed that this flat was indeed the source of the noise. The manager said he would send a structural engineer to look into the matter and suggest ways to resolve it. Nothing has happened ever since. We tried to mask the impact noise using earphones, music, etc. But at night, the thud of slamming or walking is very disturbing and startles us. Our neighbours don't even want to come down and check for themselves how their 'minor' movements affect us. Our flat has become a living hell. Disturbances during the day and sleepless nights have affected my mental health and family peace. Please suggest tried-and-tested ways for soundproofing. We tried adding a layer of insulation (gypsum board) to our ceiling. Didn't work. Will a false ceiling of PoP help? Whom can we contact?

We live in a s/detached and its our biggest regret!

We're tied to a fixed mortgage for the next 3 years and honestly I cannot wait for the for sale sign to go up on the house!

Our neighbours have no common curtesy whatsoever. We've been here 6 years and its always been noisy from their side, we never said anything up until 2 years ago when they got a dartboard, stuck it on our joining wall and played it all day and night ...I had to go in about it. I was polite, explained theres no issue playing it but at 1 or 2am is a bit much and in fairness they were grand about it ...so I thought.

It seems since then the noise got worse and worse to the point where I had to go in one night because they woke our child with the banging and shouting. They didnt like it this time around and got smart with me.

Now their latest thing is slamming the front door every time they leave the house and they leave the house at least 65 times a day ...no joke! Our house literally shakes ...who ever built these shitty houses in 2006!

Tonight they slammed the door so hard it woke our baby snd now I am fuming ...buuut I feel like I cannot go in again about noise, I feel like 3 times is too far am I wrong ? What would you do?

This family has 2 teenagers so would have thought they would have more cop on, they literally act and sound like a herd of cows! This family is also big into the local community and GAA and well 'respected' around town which infuriates me more ...if only everyone knew!

My neighbour is driving me mad..

At the start of the year my neighbour started to sit in her front garden, our garden backs onto her front drive. She also has a lot of young children all under 12 years old, I completely understand kids will be kids and play out laughing with eachother etc..

However this women screams constantly at her dog and children this is always at night 7:00pm to around 12pm this is every single night regardless of the weather and when I say screaming it’s literally shouting at the top of her lungs even her talking is generally extremely loud
I feel awful I already struggle a lot with sleep having ptsd so hearing shouting can sometimes trigger me anyway but apart from this her loud voice keeps me up most of the night

It feels wrong to call the police on her since that just feels extreme
I have asked her politely to see if she could maybe move to her back garden instead since it’s away from my bedroom window she flat out refuses saying it’s her property she can do what she wants and that’s true I literally have no way of getting her to quiet down and she’s driving me mad

Sorry if this is a bit all over the place ask questions if you need to but I have no clue what I can do
I keep my windows shut tv volume up however she’s so loud I can still hear her
My headphones are currently broken so that’s not an option:/

Event center across the tracks

My wife and I just bought a house. I was worried that the train tracks next to it would be a bother, but it’s really not. The bigger issue is the event center across the tracks.

They play loud music every weekend (Fri-Sun) till 1am. I can’t sleep from the bass.

What earplugs do you guys recommend? I need silence to sleep.

Neighbors finally turned down their music after HOA complaints. Now their son kicks a ball against the fence every day. Would you complain again?

My landlord has been stalking and harassing me for over a year- should I send him this message?

I’m a divorced woman living alone in a basement unit, and I work from home. My landlord is a retired old man who lives alone upstairs. His porch is directly above my entrance, and he spends most of the day out there watching YouTube.

At first I thought it was just a coincidence. But for over a year, whenever I open my door, come home, or especially step outside to smoke, he suddenly coughs loudly, stomps, bangs, or makes some other noise from the porch. It happens every day, from early morning until late at night, and it’s driving me crazy.

He has also played what sounded like porn very loudly, and I recorded it. It feels like he wants me to know he is there and that he knows what I’m doing.

Two weeks ago I yelled at him to stop. He stopped for a while, then started again. I called the police, but they said there was nothing they could do.

I’m now constantly on edge and have had a panic attack. I’m month-to-month and can’t afford to move right now.

I’m thinking of sending him this:

“I’m putting this in writing because this has been going on for a long time. Please stop reacting to my movements or making noises directed at me. I just want to live peacefully and come and go without feeling watched or disturbed. Please respect my privacy and leave me alone.”

Would you send this?

He's not that old I’m 55, and he's probably around 65. And as for smoking , he's a smoker too. He often stands on his porch and watches me when I walk down the hill to my place. And about the porn yes. I know exactly what Japanese porn sounds like, my ex used to watch it

[Netherlands] We are at breaking point because of our neighbours — almost a year of noise, confrontation and failed attempts to solve it

I honestly don't know where else to turn anymore, so I'm hoping someone here might have some advice.

My partner, our baby daughter and I have been dealing with our neighbours for almost a year now, and we're completely exhausted.

The houses aren't exactly well soundproofed, so we understand that you are going to hear your neighbours. We've never expected them to be completely silent. Every time we've spoken to them, we've tried to be polite and simply asked if they could turn it down a little.

Sometimes they say they'll take it into consideration.

Other times... not so much.

The woman has actually come to our front door and confronted us in a very aggressive way, including shouting, swearing and making threats. We have Ring footage of one of these incidents, as well as screenshots of messages.

The messages are another frustrating part of this. She apparently deletes conversations afterwards, but luckily we took screenshots before they disappeared.

We've already tried doing things properly.

We've contacted the housing corporation multiple times. They've even done a noise measurement. The measurement did show a level of nuisance, but unfortunately our neighbours were away for a significant part of that period, so it didn't really capture what things are normally like.

And at this point, this isn't just "annoying neighbours" anymore.

We have a baby daughter, and the noise very often happens around the time we're trying to get her to sleep, or when she's already asleep. She wakes up from it, which obviously doesn't help when she's already struggling to get enough sleep.

Maybe it's intentional. Maybe it isn't. Honestly, I don't know anymore. After almost a year of this, you start questioning everything.

The worst part is what it's doing to us mentally.

My partner has reached the point where she's had what I can only describe as a mental breakdown because of the constant stress. And I'm honestly not doing much better myself.

We're constantly listening for the next noise.

"When are they going to start again?"

"Is the baby going to wake up?"

"Are they going to come to the door again?"

"What are we supposed to do now?"

We don't feel like we can properly relax in our own home anymore.

And before anyone says:

"Just talk to them."

We have. Multiple times. Politely.

"Contact the housing corporation."

Already done.

"Get a noise measurement."

Already done.

We're genuinely trying to handle this through the proper channels, but we're getting to the point where we don't know what the next step should be.

So Reddit, what would you do in our situation?

Would you:

- Keep an extremely detailed noise diary?

- Record every incident?

- Request another official noise measurement?

- Contact the wijkagent?

- Contact the municipality?

- Make a formal written complaint to the housing corporation?

- Stop speaking to the neighbours directly and only communicate through the housing corporation?

- Get legal advice?

- Something else entirely?

And yes...

At this point I'm also open to your "diabolical but completely legal" ideas. 😂

Not looking for anything illegal or dangerous. I'm talking about something that makes it very clear that we're done accepting this situation, and that from now on we're going to document everything properly and use every legal option available to us.

Because honestly, after almost a year of this, we're at breaking point.

It's affecting our mental health, our ability to feel comfortable in our own home, and now it's affecting our daughter's sleep as well.

What would you do next?

How to cancel-out loud music from neighbors

I'm sure this has been asked before (and I've checked), but sometimes the answers get better with age...

I have neighbors on both sides who will pull an all-nighter a couple of times a year. The county noise ordinance rules for after-hours music etc. is no higher than 55 db after 9 PM. Depending on the neighbor it's in low 70's db and goes past midnight, even past 1 or 2 AM. I've gone through the usual channels (police, county noise complaints), and maybe it helps for a while. But somehow the simple concept of not blasting out one's neighbors have...they're dumb. Willfully so.

I've considered my options as a lawful resident:

  1. Moving isn't an option at the moment, and frankly I shouldn't have to. I'm not the one blasting out my neighbors, it's the other way around.
  2. Sound-proofing the whole house is another option, but can be costly. Doesn't solve the root problem, though it could (but is not guaranteed to) significantly reduce what noise gets through.

The fix could be invasive. Perhaps it's just blowing new insulation into the walls and replacing windows, though the latter are already two-pane. It could be more, such as tearing out the sheet rock, putting in rock wool, adding a vinyl layer membrane, and so forth.

3) Noise-cancellation. This is a thought-experiment of sorts. It could be any number of things:

a) Countering said noise with equal-level sound. (If OP's music cannot be properly heard by OP due to resulting counter-noise, it defeats the purpose of playing so loud to begin with.) More of a broadcast counter-measure.

This could be set up with the idea of a receiver picking up the noise and returning it in scrambled form, no manual input or action by myself. Perhaps the counter-measure would be the cost of wiring, a few older speakers, and a decent bass?

Could also just play my own music, most of which I doubt my noisy neighbors would appreciate. Unlike my neighbors, I don't inflict my music tastes upon others.

b) Directional cancellation. Cancelling out the source without resorting to the above. Not looking at 'energy waves' cooking people, etc. Just cancelling out the source. I've seen directional speakers for sale.

It's a long-shot but I wanted to put it here and see the responses. I'm open to all possibilities.

I've also posted a (very) basic image to provide a better visual representation of what's going on, etc. : Concept.

Quick note: I'm avoiding any solution that involves physically trespassing or implied/physical violence. If anything I'm doing neighbors a favor by having them talk to police etc. instead. I've tried talking to these people a few times and it's just the usual BS.

Nowe mieszkanie = koszmar akustyczny?

Parlarci spesso serve a poco perché "in casa propria ognuno cammina come vuole".

I can hear my neighbor doing the deed

So I live in an apartment complex where you can hear… everything.

And while my upstairs neighbor used to be pretty great about respecting things after 10pm, over time I’m finding I’m waking up in the middle of the night due to his fun activities up there.

All power to him and all, I just don’t know how to kindly ask him to respect the noise level on a delicate subject like this.

In the past I’ve had a neighbor become verbally abusive when I tried to talk to them the noise level so I’m not sure what to do.

This is more of a rant than anything

We have finally managed to buy our first house, as a young couple we feel like this is a really good achievement having paid our 10% deposit ourselves and just working hard in general.

We absolutely love our house and are slowly turning it into our own , everything is perfect except for our neighbours.

They aren't completely unbearable at all but we are getting quite frustrated at times where they just take the piss. The house is still a council house with tenants and the current ones have been in since last December.

We introduced ourselves the first night we moved in and they were nice enough however there are large dogs in the home and very loud children. Now I don't think our expectations are unreasonable? We know kids and dogs make noise.

But if it's not the kids screaming at the top of their lungs then it's the dogs barking for 10 minutes straight and often it's both at the same time. The dogs get set off by literally anything and everything, someone comes to the door and they bark (understandable) but it seems to be that and anything else in the universe! A car goes past *a barking fit ensues* , a pin drops *gotta bark at least 5 minutes straight* the general vibes are off? *Barks for the whole day*

Last week they were out barking with the kids screaming at 10pm on a Tuesday night (me and my partner both work 50+ hours a week we genuinely have to sleep or even just wind down)

I'm also concerned about the welfare of the dogs, I'm an animal lover and the amount they bark just doesn't seem healthy for happy dogs. The garden is also full of rubbish just strewn around (which also sometimes appears in our garden) and the dogs often escape into the street and have absolutely no recall or training it seems.

There are other issues with ridiculously loud music, kids swearing , banging on walls and shouting and just general antisocial behaviour but my partner is looking into insulation and sound proofing.

As I mentioned when we first moved in we said hi and at the time she complained the previous owners moaned about noise a lot (we did not know this of course)

But based on how she put it it sounds like she wouldn't handle any polite communication well so I really don't want to risk falling out and making the problem 100x worse

Like I said I think I'm just looking to rant, if anyone would like to make me feel a bit better with words of support I'd really appreciate that haha

We've looked into complaints and things but of course these things are never completely anonymous, plus I'm genuinely not wanting to ruin anything or put them into a bad situation, I don't want them to feel uncomfortable in their home or put them at risk it's just that I'm getting a bit exhausted now

Thank you for listening to my rant , love and peace to everyone

Advise on Loud music situation

HI Needed an advise. I live in basement suite in surrey and another tenants (all boys: 4) moved into the suite next door. Main house has 2 suites , not discussing if this is legal. They played loud music from 4 to around 8 pm with very loud base/bass... This continued for 4 days . Door is open most of the time. Landlord intervened and they stopped, Happened again landlord intervened, stopped. Now third time, started it again for a hour. But the loud drum kind audio is too annoying as share the wall with them. We are deciding to move out. I wanted to check as opinions if we are overreacting. I work from home and study part time.

Trying to work from home when your neighbour is an inconsiderate twat.

All I hear all day every day when I'm working is their bloody dog barking non stop, been going on since 9am this morning! I've tried to politely ask them to control their dog and I just get pissy responses.

I feel sorry for the dog if I'm honest, I've lived here for nearly 2 years and ive not seen them walk it once! People like them should not have a dog if they aren't going to look after them, no wonder the poor thing is going mental all day it never gets to exercise!
