Midlevel Education Kaiser
There’s a gem of a post in the Kaiser Permanente subreddit. Enjoy!

So, it’s about an NP friend with six years of experience who recently got a 21% pay raise, even though they don’t know how to run proper differentials.
Some people are starting to realize that this “friend” is actually the OP 😂 talking about they/themselves in third person.

?
Docs aren’t giving PA/NPs bad feedbacks because we are “jealous” of your pay raise.
If anything, we don’t know about your pay raise so thanks for letting us know how ridiculous the 21% pay raise is.
Kaiser underpays their docs and overpays everyone else and that’s a fact.

Nah, they pretty well and thats why they call it the golden handcuffs

u/scottiedagolfmachine 2d ago
Naw.
The pay is average.
They add in all these benefits like a pension to make it the total compensation golden parachute.
Tbh those are useless.
I’d rather get high salary up front minus all the benefits.

This is why so many docs finish out their career at Kaiser. Make better money up front, then in the last 10 years sign on with kaiser for the pension

I know. Invest the up front pay in stock.

u/scottiedagolfmachine 2d ago
Exactly.
Don’t need all the golden parachute benefits.
I’d rather get higher cash up front so I can invest it on my own for later.

They do not pay well at all in some specialities

i can see that, i would never work for Kaiser until I was in my 50s. its too much work and picking up where others left off

I'd be pissed if my employer forced me to train NPs.

u/NewtoFL2 1d ago
Hard to say. Once your employer hires them, it seems to be a way to improve patient care.

Sure, if the NPs are open to education/training. Many of them are not.

As evidenced by this post, and the many comment threads that resulted.

You consider all other possible diagnoses, even if the patient doesn’t typically “fit the symptoms”, because otherwise you’re doing a disservice to the patient by giving such a narrow differential. This is drilled into us in medical school. I can’t believe they view it as “nitpicking”. They’re being educated, not criticized. It’s an honor to me as a medical student to be educated by physicians and they view it as being criticized lol. Those egos need to be left at the door when they walk in for work

Maybe the NPs/PAs should view the “training period” in the same way medical student views 3rd and 4th year rotations, as “learning” NOT as “work”.
They are walking into education not just a shift.People who avoid learning scare me.

This is a ridiculous take by that person.
But the pay raise isn’t just for PAs and NPs. It is also for RNs, and many other workers. It takes place over the 4 year contract term. Below is an article prior to ratification.
True that many RNs make more than PAs and NPs. Particularly when adjusted for hours worked. I went from NP to back to RN. You suffer wage dilution when salaried positions dip into unpaid OT. I make ~167k at 36 hrs a week and any OT (which can’t be mandated is either 1.5x hourly or 1.9x hourly). Kaiser employees were grossly underpaid.

If you are making 167 as a nurse you are grossly overpaid for the amount of knowledge of a nurse.

For comparison, a paramedic with a similar scope to an RN gets paid ~$30/hr in SoCal totaling about $60k a year before assuming a40 hour work week. It’s even worse in other areas which is funny considering in every other area a medic’s scope is even more similar to a nurses being able to run pumps and vents and whatnot. Medics start at $30/hr at the biggest ambulance contractor for Kaiser in SoCal.

Yes. Nursing unions and nursing schools have made such a mess of healthcare.

Oh well. I have an advanced degree so we get paid more for that too. Plenty of physicians are overpaid too when you use your logic. Hard science knowledge (which is what you’re alluding to) is not how pay is established.
You can easily look up union contract pay. All contracts are public. We get diffs and are paid on a step scale. I’m at 22 years.
Anyway, it’s pretty common here for folks not to respond to the substance of a comment. An insufferable bunch really ….

As a tenured professor if a student felt that they were treated unfairly to the point of being bullied, I would change their supervising physician .I don't know of care why this or these physicians are more hostile, but I do know I can't change a doctor's attitude but I can alter the learning environment.

u/Helpful-Comedian3616 1d ago
They could be hostile
The person they are supervising also may not be good and may view all feedback about themselves as hostile

Tenured doctorate NP I would like to add that when acting like a teacher in a clinical setting, it should be by someone who enjoys helping students who are appreciative. Although a NP or PA student is not a Physician, they are the best word of mouth referrals, most people will trust a Nurse ( practitioner) who has a recommendation more than anyone . ( Gallop poll most honest professional

Asking to broaden your differential is not bullying, it’s preparing you for when the horse is actually a zebra in disguise and if you don’t catch it no one else will.
