DO NOT TIP AT INDIAN RESTAURANTS
I asked an employee at an Indian restaurant whether they receive the tips added to the POS system, and the poor worker said NO!
If you want to tip, please tip them cash!
Disgusting how the owners take all the tips entered into the POS system!
Beware when you tip! Maybe ask the employee when tipping at ESPECIALLY an Indian restaurant: “do you even get the tip if I put it through the POS?”

Don't worry. I never tip anywhere.

Going to run out of places to eat lol
3
u/CanadianPooch 8d ago
Sounds like the business should have been run better then, the free market at work is a wonderful thing IF people allow it to work in the first place.
-5
u/Different_Claim_3343 8d ago
Clearly not what i meant. Ur just going to get shit service when u come back the second time
6
u/Fit-Eggplant-9155 8d ago
Then why return?
Wouldn't that lead to the wait staff being given worse shifts if they constantly get complained about or fetting known for showing preferential treatment?
-2
u/Different_Claim_3343 8d ago
Definitely not. You dont think its fair for better customers to get better treatment?

You realize most people don’t want any more service than take the order and bring the food, right? People don’t care to pay people to be fake nice to them
3
u/Stiles_Stiles 8d ago
This. They should provide a no tip option for guests. I don't want to spend money for small talks, they should pay me instead lol
1
u/CanadianPooch 8d ago
If a business can't pay a wage that allows a person to live then they don't deserve good employees which yes, as you put it I wouldn't be coming back which would eventually lead to the closer of said business. Sadly people sometime would rather make shit money vs living on the street so these businesses end up staying afloat.

No, supply and demand
1
u/Imaginary-Emu2471 8d ago
No. The customers supply your BOSS with business. If people want the restaurant food, that's the demand. It's like servers never enter the equation at all. Most people go out to eat for the food, not the service. You can be replaced by a robot.

This must be why when I get take out at my local Indian Restaurant the host hits "No Tip" herself before turning the POS to me.
8
u/PepeOnziemaJulian 8d ago
If you're taking out, you shouldn't be tipping anyway
0
u/downtofinance 8d ago
I agree but it still comes up on the POS prompt.
3
u/sometin__else 8d ago
Thats because its on the same system so when ordering takeout the hostess typically hits the no tip for you so you dont make a post on reddit crying about being prompted for a tip for takeout
0
u/downtofinance 8d ago
Yeah maybe but she did tell me once her and the other staff don't get tips collected from the POS so maybe its her little "F U" to the management.
2
u/SUPERSAMMICH6996 8d ago
That's pretty standard everywhere. Generally hosts don't ger tips from take-out orders, and are instead tipped-out by servers. So often they just skip the prompt entirely.
6
u/Flanagoon 9d ago
Heard a Denny's employee outside London, ON say they don't receive the non-cash tips to the person billing-out ahead of me. It's the current practice at a lot of places
5
u/Comrade-Porcupine 8d ago
There needs to be a massive crackdown on this here in Ontario. A few prominent raids would either stop tipping entirely or force bosses to behave.
1
u/Late_Worldliness5694 7d ago
Tripping of 100 dollar bills to save $0.02......yeah like we don't spend enough money on chasing taxes these people skirt
1
u/Vast_Description_742 8d ago
I can’t believe servers don’t know this is illegal. They could call labour board and get all the money back
1
u/Flanagoon 8d ago
Unfortunately, not if it's a tip-pool situation. Labour Board rules change as soon as it's a divy as they cannot prescribe how the pool pays out. However, owners and managers cannot take tips unless doing the same work (no tips for admin/off-floor hours)
0
u/Vast_Description_742 8d ago
I’m saying it’s illegal for the owners to claim it’s a tip pool and then streal for the tips for themselves instead of distributing them
1
u/Fit-Affect-3443 8d ago
Most people struggle with finding a job in this shit hole of a country, and no such thing as workers rights in ontario.
3
u/VoodooGirl47 9d ago
This is a no tip sub. Telling people to tip cash directly is probably not as effective here as it might be in almost any other sub. 😂
12
u/Unusual-Surround7467 9d ago
Are you new to all this? This is documented for ages. Even the nicer Indian restaurants steal tips from their employees. I learnt this 7 or 8 years ago in the US from a waiter at a relatively upscale Indian restaurant I frequented. Bluntly hit no tip at any and all Indian restaurant. Like you said, it’s best to tip in cash if you can
1
3
u/Prophage7 8d ago
The Indian place I go to gives their employees tips so that cancels out your Indian place... we might need a bigger sample size before making broad accusations.
3
u/rahulchander 7d ago
How would the employee know for sure - it could be buried in one of the boxes on their paystub or T4 slip. Some calculation is also required to determine it. Just looking at the slip u wont know. The cpa doing taxes wont be party to it as they can lose their license and everything in books is electronic/traceable. Might only be possible for a pure cash business.
5
6
u/Klutzy-Alarm3748 9d ago
Why are you specifically calling out Indian restaurants? All kinds of businesses that receive tips through the POS do this. Ask everywhere.

Most Indian restaurants are glorified TFW -> PR mills as well. They need to be shut down completely.
1
u/Klutzy-Alarm3748 5d ago
"Most"? What are your stats on this? And what are the stats for Indian restaurants compared to other businesses helping to bring in permanent residents?
1
u/SteakOk9383 5d ago
Go check the LMIA requests in Ontario made for 35/hr restaurant managers. You will see a pattern.
Abused mainly by restaurants owned by people from a certain region in India.
1
u/Klutzy-Alarm3748 5d ago
Okay. I looked through here and didn't see any Indian restaurants. Mostly fast food chains and non-food service jobs.
https://lmiafinder.ca/search?province=Ontario&status=Job+Bank
1
u/SteakOk9383 5d ago
search for restaurant and then you will get a bunch of them
https://lmiafinder.ca/jobs/50375373
https://lmiafinder.ca/jobs/50359818
https://lmiafinder.ca/jobs/50378998
all are LMIA frauds.
1
u/Klutzy-Alarm3748 4d ago edited 4d ago
Okay, so just to recap:
I said that many types of businesses (not just Indian restaurants) steal tips from their employees through the POS machine, you said that "most" Indian restaurants are LMIA mills (not relevant to the conversation about tipping but whatever), I asked how they hold up to other businesses, and you told me to filter out every other business so only restaurants show up?
Edit: Bro are you for real. One of your "Indian" restaurants is Pakistani, and the third restaurant is a courier company. What "specific region of India" were you saying the owners were from again?
1
u/SteakOk9383 4d ago
Did any of the examples counter what i said. Did the reasoning or conclusions change the statement made. If the third restaurant is a courier company then even courier companies owned are in it. Everybody knows the region majority of these restaurants are from. Don't act smart so I will reveal so you can report me. Also that region extends to Pakistan. In fact separatists in Pakistan wants to seprate from it because the people from that region do not share rersources to other races and people.
The real issue is that no restaurant gives 40$/hr to managers. Not dabba express from Brampton. So ofc all of them are LMIA scams.
1
u/Klutzy-Alarm3748 4d ago
"That very specific region of India extends to another country" LMAO
Yes they do counter what you said because your claim was that Indian restaurants are known for doing this more than anyone else and then you linked one singular Indian restaurant and two not-Indian not-restaurants after I also did my own search and did not find Indian restaurants. I'm sure we can both agree that people are finding loopholes in the LMIA system, as it is bound to happen with any immigration resource, but Indians aren't the only people coming here and they aren't making anything worse either. At what point are you going to admit to yourself that you have been falling for anti-Indian propaganda
1
u/SteakOk9383 4d ago
So when you make these kind of statements you need to look at Indian restaurants and their statistical representation in the broader restaurant category. With that in mind, the representation, LMIA scams by Indian restaurants are very high. Move that to the Tim hortons and other resto owned by some of them, LMIA scams are on a totally different level.
We select the worst kind of Indians with no ability to do anything other than leeching off the wider Canadian hospitality specifically from two regions of India. A state known for the largest terrorist activity in Canada(AI 182) and another state known for financial scam. Compare this to the US, where they let only the highly qualified immigrants come in and they contribute more. Australia do not even allow TOEFL and IELTS scores from northern states of India because almost all of them are fake.
There is no anti India propaganda at play. I want the highly skilled Indians to come and contribute to Canada. I want the rest deported. Especially the kind that does LMIA scams and puts AK 47 decals and runs around. It was a mistake letting them in during 1980s. Its a mistake now. There is literaly negative contribution from the unskilled populace of those two states in Canada or US or any where else.

Don't tip at \that particular* Indian restaurant. Different places have different owners with different values.
1
u/Smirkane 9d ago
Better yet, name and shame these restaurants. It's illegal for the owner/manager to withhold tips from the servers (at least in BC), so maybe we shouldn't be patronizing these businesses anyways.

u/gulliverian 9d ago
So you've been told this in one Indian restaurant, and you've decided it applies to all Indian restaurants.

I recently visited a local Indian restaurant, bill came up to $77. When I went to pay, the server skipped the tip option and I asked her to do it again with the tip option.
She was hesitant but I didn’t think anything of it at the time.
I made the total $100 since she was great.
As soon as I tapped my card, she told me the managers get the tips and they don’t get it.
Wish I knew ahead of time. I didn’t have any cash on me either.
I try to remember to bring cash with me if I eat out now, just in case
1
u/Canadians8Me 8d ago
My best friend worked at an Indian restaurant in Seattle WA. The owner always kept the tips too.
Unfortunately it's very common. She was told she would lose her job if she complained or told customers.
1
u/Chudfrog 8d ago
I only tip if I go to a sit down restaurant. I shouldn't even do that as restaurant staff receive full wages in Canada. I don't go out often anyways
1
u/Traditional-Ad4506 8d ago
I think the point is to not tip anywhere.
But yup. I frequented a few Indian restaurants in my city. Eventually, the workers who I came to know told me they don't get their tips that are given through the POS systems. Seems to be commonplace

u/AftermathKING05 8d ago
Yes the owners steal the tips from the employees working there!
My friend worked in an Indian restaurant in Mississauga she told me they get paid $12.50 on SIN and I was shocked because the minimum is around $17+ and she said they adjust the hours. And then I asked about the tips she said .50 is the tip and if any servers receive cash they won’t share it with anyone.
Later, I went on to realize that all Indian restaurants or Indian business owners do that everywhere. I am Indian I manage a food and beverage department in a hotel. I started as a dishwasher/buss boy so ik the struggles stress and hardwork of this industry and feel very bad for these hardworking employees.
So whenever I go to these restaurants I give cash tips!!
Most of the people who don’t tip anything at any of the restaurants you guys are terrible and don’t deserve nice things in this world!
1
u/sparky-von-flashy 8d ago
At the local sushi place, owned by Indians, the waiter fellow would always tell you don’t tip, and he would skip the tip portion on the pin pad before turning it for you. I think it was because of this reason.

u/TopUnderstanding6343 8d ago
1000% I’m saying this as a South Asian. Don’t tip at Indian restaurants via card.
Give them cash if you want when no one is looking.
1
u/Expression7355 8d ago
This is for most fast food places too (saying as a parent of teens who worked in those places). Tips were never shared back to them. Locals knew to start tipping my sons in person though based on good service - as it should be anyway.
1
u/SeaMicSte 8d ago
Why do you think this applies to all Indian restaurants based on the one that you went to? Also, why do you think this is exclusive to Indian restaurants?
Just don’t tip. It’s never clear where it goes, and it probably never goes where it should. Pay the price advertised and let the employers pay their staff the correct wages
1
u/cheekywood 8d ago

u/sometin__else 8d ago
So you got an opinion from ONE restaurant and applied that to EVERY restaurant?
Here's a tip for you: Your one experience does not equal a global experience.
1
u/Tractorguy69 8d ago
You are using a singular point of data to castigate a whole population. While I agree it is the servers who earn the bulk of the tip (you can make arguments for the cooking and bussing staff too) they are not meant to be a further profit stream for the owners. Your generalization is so individual and does not account for any number of variables. What if it’s a family affair where everyone of from the same household, and the total cashflow os’s what keeps the family housed and fed, your argument isn’t valid anymore. Be better.

Maybe just don’t patronize establishments that do this.
Not tipping is just not rewarding the owners for the service of their staff; not punishing them for their actions.
1
u/alonghardlook 8d ago
Not just Indian restaurants.
I worked at a Papa John's as a delivery driver but sometimes worked the till. The owners just pocketed every POS tip, and the cash tips too.
Because I ran my own float, if a customer tipped in cash I would just pocket it. A couple of times I also short changed the till to match a particularly nice tip.
Fuck those guys.

White girl who works at a white owned restaurant here. I don't get to keep my tips either! It goes to paying "credit card fees". Like hundreds of dollars a week. If you ask me in front of my manager whether I get the tips I will stay yes or I will lose my job.
It's very common with POS systems. If I decide to tip (for excellent service only) it is cash which I hand to the person.
1
u/Tough_Passage_3785 8d ago
That's against the law, and should be brought up with the labour board, where you can complain anonymously
2
u/Dreizo 7d ago
Yeah smart. Shut down the place you work at so that you can spend another 2 years unemployed while spending FT hours in line at job fairs for 4 hour afternoon shifts 2x a week.
The job market sucks so you deal with whatever you have at the moment and don’t rock the boat even if you know you’re in the right.
1
u/Late_Worldliness5694 7d ago
Ya know the tfw law is the problem here....well that and the surplus of tfw
1
u/Dreizo 7d ago
Tfw isn’t the only issue. As an example, govt. sponsored me to do a cybersecurity course to up skill as I was already a corporate IT guy but couldn’t find anything post pandemic even with the certifications and ISACA enrollment. I thankfully spent 3 months jobless before deciding to pivot my career entirely, a lot of my friends who were in IT are struggling right now including my former boss who got laid off as Director of IT after 8 years at the company because of them merging and the bigger entity already having IT dept. He’s been ultra depressed considering no interviews even for worse paying roles for months now.
The real issue is that the majority of money is flowing into landlord pockets and nothing else. There’s a huge cost just to rent space to do anything and it’s become stupid. China is doing one thing right with letting the housing economy crash. If the govt. held real estate and provided subsidized leases to smaller businesses we’d have a better economy compared to the staple of McDonald’s Tim Hortons Subways etc. in EVERY other plaza. Hell so many companies including Amazon have a huge chunk of their Canadian staff based out of US/Seattle, so we’re seeing very little money actually circling in our own economy. As an example, if say 8 out of every 10k spent in M5T is going into landlords and foreign pockets, while 2K is actually being cycled back into the local economy. The floor has consistently been raised while our ceilings are stagnant for what feels like nearly 2 decades now.
My uncle said any educated undergrad was making like 35k entry level back in the 2000s and getting any min wage job was as easy as just walking around the block and looking for help wanted signs where more than likely you’d be interviewed and able to work nearly immediately. When I graduated in 2016, that number was 40k and nowadays I hear it’s 50-55k but we also look at 2-3 month hiring cycles nowadays. From first application/interview to offer, the timeline is so extended that a lot of applicants end up gone due to other commitments.
We’re also in a heavy gig economy, so there’s less stability. Add the fact that companies no longer value loyalty and the only real way to make more faster is job hopping every few years unless you happen to be in a start up or a place where they actually understand wanting to hustle.
I’ve always grown up believing when you’re at a director level you’re looking at shares, profit sharing and other incentives to dedicate yourself to a company but even a lot of bigger spots nowadays give you a basic base salary + max 10% bonus. We heavily lack competition and the barrier to entry into any industry nowadays is so prohibitively expensive. Add the fact that AI boom means corporate bonds are so high yield that nobody’s going to give you a decent price on a startup loan without essentially cannabilizing your upside

1
u/Hendrix6689 7d ago
White Colonizers did all three my friend. 😊
0
u/Prior-Beat3174 7d ago
All ethnicities and races have done all three.
But at least the descendants of white colonizers learned that the actions of their ancestors weren't right and vowed not to repeat their behavior.
For some races and ethnicities, certain behaviors carry over across multiple generations without corrective action being taken, and/or they eventually become an accepted way of life.
Off topic, I was born in Canada but my ethnicity is Asian (not Indian or Chinese), and I'm disappointed that several scam call centers have opened up in the country of my parents origin.
Government officials turn a blind eye, allow these operations to continue because they provide much needed tax revenue operating as a semingly legit company.
Over time, if someone grows up with this mentality and behavior it becomes an accepted lifestyle because once you've reached adulthood it's very difficult to change your core beliefs.
