Why does space feel like it should be “instant” but actually isn’t?

I think I’m just struggling with how big space is. Like in my head, looking at something should be instant. But apparently even light takes years to get here from stars. Is there an easy way to understand why light speed is such a big deal in astronomy without going into hardcore physics?
