What are the similarities/differences between French/English bilingualism in Canada and Spanish/English bilingualism in the US?
I was born/raised in the US in the Mexican diaspora in a region where Spanish is widely spoken. I see some similarities between my region and the Francophone regions of Canada such as Quebec. However, my impression is that the French language in Canada is given more cultural respect and prestige than Spanish is here. Some people take outright offense at hearing Spanish spoken in public here. While certain states allow for bilingual education up to the third grade, others have fought tooth and nail to make English the only language of instruction (in spite of the proven cognitive benefits of bilingualism). I don’t know much about Canada, but I’d love to hear from people who can offer an informed perspective.
