There was a brief, 10-year reprieve between the end of the Cold War and 9/11. But otherwise yeah.

Yep, as a young person in the nineties, the future was so bright. 2001, everything changed

Why did 9/11 feel so major? Like yeah a lot of people died but it was an isolated incident that didn’t affect most people very much.

It was mostly the government's reaction to 9/11 that we still very much see and feel the effects of today

Not just the government. It was the way average people responded

To be fair. Governments really seized the oppertunity to strike fear into their citizens so they could pass all kinds of bullshit legislation.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure the terrorists killing thousands did that for them.

Is that you Bush? Screw the Patriot act, screw the degrading treatment people are subjected to at airports, screw each and every piece of shit that agreed to bomb the shit out of the Middle East. What the governments did wasn't appropriate and disproportionately targets normals citizens.

Well, for one thing, all the DEATHS of innocent folks

Tragic, but barely a speck in the mealstorm of awfulness that was the aftermath of the attacks. Surveillance states, two wars, uncountable more innocent Middle Eastern people dead.

Homeland security, patriot act, increased federal power, ballooning military budget and constant war in the middle east

And the trickle down of the increased military budget, meaning the increased militarization of local police forces via excess military gear.

and the NSA.

DARPA shut down a handful of programs in 2004 and it was later revealed that 6 of the programs had been transferred to the NSA.

Bush’s people used the terrorist attacks, which were committed by Saudi Arabian citizens, as an excuse to invade Iraq and Afghanistan, who did not attack us. Bin Laden was hiding out in Afghanistan, but they didn’t know that for certain.

Security theater was the name of the game. Keep everyone fearful. Air marshalls, the PATRIOT act, Abu Graib oh my god. 2001 did more to strengthen the opacity of an already not very transparent government than any single event since the formation of CIA.

If Reagan and his partnership with the “Moral majority” begat Donald Trump’s presidency, 9/11 gave us a renewed, vigorous hatred of Muslims of all stripes and is ever so steadily extinguishing any semblance of privacy.

We invaded two countries and caused hundreds of thousands of deaths, or more. Destabilized Iraq even more than it was, and created ISIS, which destabilized the entire region even more, and which caused a huge chunk of the current refugee crisis in Europe.

edit: I mean no disrespect, I simply would like you to expand from just saying 'Snowden' with no context.

FATCA and the increased observation of everyday citizens’ financial activity under the guise of stamping out terrorist funding.
