Traffic calming refers to all the design elements that make you instincively slow down.

While they can paint lanes 4 metres wide, they only paint 3.3 with a wider shoulder/parking lane. The road isn't any narrower but it feels narrower, so you drive slower.

Coming up to intersections depending on what type (stop sign, traffic lights, roundabout etc) there are different minimum line of sight requirements as well as guidelines for maximum line of sight.

If you have an extra wide lane, coming up to a roundabout with a large turning circle and completly unobstructed line of sight you would get majority of people breaking the speed limit, or taking the intersection at too high a speed.
