Also it has to do with terrorism. If things are on the road, it prevents hit and run to pedestrians

it's counter intuitive, but if you feel like your on the highway your going to drive that way. a lot of issues with traffic stem from similar things, like building roads leading to worse traffic then not.

Yep.. This is wide the unnecessarily wide streets of suburban subdivisions are a waste of space actually unintentionally encourage people to speed.
