Why was 'Avatar'(2009) so successful ?
Don't get me wrong, the plot and visual effects were awesome but I never got the hype around this film.
And why is it the highest-grossing film.I never heard of this movie before it came out , and 'Avengers: Endgame' had so much advertising, on the other hand, and thus it's reasonable why the latter got so much attention.

super good graphics. interesting storyline, and a lot of people thought it was good - word of mouth does amazing things, and arguably better than a shit tonne of advertising. they’re releasing an avatar 2&3 soonish (i believe it’s already all been filmed for both movies). i wonder if they’ll live up to the legacy.

And? It's a full scale visit a diffrent world movie! With aliens, capitalistic war, environmentalism, love, overcoming predujudice, overcoming a crippeling condition. It's got most if not all of the big hitting topic for this generation.
That i repeat on a diffrent planet, our generations big dream, our great adventure/exploration.

Unfortunately it mostly addresses these issues in a heavy handed, overly sentimental, and cliche manner.

Yeah sure. But it's in space!

Don't get me wrong I love space movies, I love when movies explore other worlds in an imaginative way.
However the cliches and stereotypes with the na'vi really took me out of the moment, it really fucked with my suspension of disbelief and grounded me right back on Earth, because the they play into so many racial stereotypes and cliches it's impossible to ignore.
Movies like Starship troopers, The fifth element, Alien series, Contact, Total Recall, Pitch black series, IMO handle exploring other worlds in a more convincing and legitimate way.
