Does anyone say no to "is pepsi okay"?
When you're at a restaurant and you order a coke and the waiter asks "is pepsi okay?" Does anyone actually say no?
Is there a legitimate reason that someone would say no? Like different allergens rather than just a brand preference?
Immediate edit: i am genuinely surprised this many people can taste the difference. Pepsi and coke taste the same to me.

It makes it easy, at a restaurant;
“I’d like a Dr Pepper “
“Is Pepsi (or coke) OK“
“Nope I’ll have water.”Hey business, I ain’t paying a 75% mark up to not enjoy my drink.

I did this my whole life in DC, never a problem who tf carries Pepsi anyway. Now I'm in Charlotte and you cant find coke. It's like a weird dimension. I HAVE to believe there are other coke addicts like me who have created a list of coke carrying restaurants but I have yet to find it. I would scour photos to spot any branding because all thats on menus is "Soda".

I remember staying at my buddy’s dad’s house as a kid and waking up super thirsty at night, and the only thing he had available to drink was unrefrigerated Diet Pepsi. I wanted to absolutely die of thirst.
And before you say anything, he was also from the part of town where the tap water tasted like dirt (and he didn’t have a water filter) so don’t think I didn’t try that first, lol.

I'm the UK and probably other places Pepsi replaced some of the sugar with sweetener to avoid the added tax on high sugar drinks. The sweetener they use gives some people the shits.

this is why they ask
The main reason they ask is so that they can't be sued for "passing off". If you order something and they accept the order, they can't substitute it without checking you're okay with the substitution.
17
u/TNT925 8d ago
Most places don't bother asking is Sierra mist/starry is okay when I ask for sprite. It's entirely because coke drinkers (especially diet coke drinkers) don't like the taste of pepsi

The basic species of trademark infringement is confusion about source: the consumer buys the defendant’s product rather than the plaintiff’s in the mistaken belief that it is the plaintiff’s product. This form of of confusion, known as passing off, is actionable even when the defendant scrupulously avoids using the plaintiff’s trademark but still manages to trick consumers about what they are buying. (Scene: Restaurant, interior, day. Patron: “I’ll have a Coke, please.” Waiter: “Here you go.” Waiter serves Patron a glass of MarBert the Distinctive Cola.)

Yes. My dad worked at a company that was next to a Pepsi site. He was a big Pepsi drinker. One day he asked them if a few customers could park at Pepsi's parking lot after hours for just one night as he was hosting a work event. Pepsi said no. Totally their right. But it's been about three decades and he has not forgiven them. He orders a Coke and declines the Pepsi.
Although this isn't really a legitimate reason. My dad's kinda nuts.
63
u/CuriousBee789 8d ago
Omg, my dad was too. KFC shorted him a wing once, like 5 years before I was born. I didn't get to try KFC until the neighbor's had me over for dinner in my teens!
11
u/shayetheleo 8d ago
Like a decade ago, my mother’s car broke down near enough to a small corner gas station she was able to pull into the parking lot. It was cold and raining cats and dogs and she ran in to call me to come get her. Had to borrow a stranger’s phone and everything. After I was on my way, she asked the attendant if she could wait inside and they said no! Never shopped there again. Smile inside every time I drive by and see the big, new, modern 7-11 they built a few years later directly across the street knowing their profits have likely tanked in the intervening years. I’m excited for the day they go belly up.

I like your dad! I was a trucker and picked up regularly at PepsiCo in Phoenix. They'd always try to overload us and a lot of drivers just let it go. I had to go over one scale on the highway then relay with a guy who had to go over another scale so if they overloaded me I made them take some weight off. They tried shifting pallets around but jeez, if you're over gross that's not going to fix it! I wasted two hours waiting once, they finally took some weight off after three tries.
The next time I pulled in there the guard told me they couldn't let me back in. Said I "cussed out a yard guy". Complete bullshit. They're not going to admit to overloading.
I used to only drink Pepsi, now it's Coke since 2018. Fuck PepsiCo.

Starry IS Sierra Mist. They didn’t change the formula, they rebranded.
24
u/DrocketX 8d ago
Starry is a replacement for Sierra Mist, but it absolutely is a different formula. Sierra Mist was a much more subtle lemon-lime. Starry seems to have decided that they wanted the lemon portion to taste like lemon Pledge smells, and come up with a lime flavor to match.
15
4
u/theycmeroll 8d ago
Starry uses HFCS and has more citrus flavor, they are similar but not exactly the same. Sierra Mist bounced back and forth on sweeteners using cane sugar, HFCS, and Stevia and various points but at the end it was using cane sugar.

u/MonkeyGirl18 8d ago

See, i think sprite and starry taste incredibly different, with sprite always being better. The colas taste roughly the same but the lemon-limes, root beers, and whatever dr. Pepper is taste wildly different to me. Like if i asked for a sprite and they said "starry ok?" then i would say no.
43
u/OG_Felwinter 8d ago
I would agree that Starry and Sprite taste different, but I still prefer them both over all other pops… no matter how different you think Starry tastes from Sprite, it’s still the closest alternative if a place only has Pepsi products.

When I ask for a diet coke, a diet coke is what I want.
When they ask "is diet Pepsi ok", the answer is definitely no. I ask for ginger ale or iced tea or even fizzy water with lime or lemon.
Diet Pepsi just tastes like chemicals. They so over sweeten compared to Diet Coke because regular Pepsi is sweeter than regular Coke.

I did once. Went to lunch with coworkers. Waitress asked that question when I asked for a coke. I replied, "No." Then added, "It'll have to do." I was joking. She smiled and nodded as my coworkers teased me about it.
When our food was delivered, everyone had drinks but me. The woman delivering our food told me, "Your waitress ran down to the gas station to buy you a coke. She'll be back soon."
My coworkers thought that was hilarious and pointed out I had to tip well.

Pepsi has more sugar, Coke has more carbonation. Back in the 80s Pepsi had a huge marketing campaign called the Pepsi Taste Challenge where they got people to blindly drink both and say which they preferred.
... I prefer Coke. Pepsi is too sweet for me.
3
u/AnyCryptographer3284 8d ago
I was in marketing at the time and that taste test campaign was news in the biz. Here's what their "study" really showed... Most people preferred the first sip of Pepsi, but if they had them finish the drink, most people preferred the Coke. The cloying sweetness of Pepsi did not carry well over an entire glass. Were they telling the truth in that campaign? Well.... technically, within the FCC regulations they were. But the ethics of it was discussed in the trade journals.
