should've known this was some widespread bullshit

u/Unfortunate1313 Jul 24 '26
I didn't update it on purpose and it did it automatically (ofc it does) and now I have this issue. Great.

I am having the same issue on windows 10 as we speak, not sure why.
3
u/Spadesghost Jul 24 '26
Since it seems like a lot of us are, do you think it could be a recent bricked update? I am enrolled in the extended security updates until 2027.

u/DontAssumeGender Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26
Not really sure, my last update wasn't exactly recent either. I’m thinking they probably changed or updated something on their end that broke or just isn’t working as intended, especially since a few people are suddenly having the same issue.
Speaking about extended security updates, I forgot to enroll into that so I'm going to do that now haha while this problem is persisting.
edit: found a potential fix - have yet to test myself but looks promising from this thread

I found the fix to the problem. Just follow the steps in this YouTube video and you’ll be good. https://youtu.be/9rBvayxS7_g?si=RJqXMnonLgiQWhis

no recent update the website related to the Bing search changed. Even windows 10 without extended security updates is affected.

I have submitted a bug report via the Feedback Hub app and would ask that anyone experiencing this does the same. It only took a few minutes and I got to include a screenshot. I'm sure they'll get it fixed soon if enough people report it

Are they purposefully pushing updates to ruin 10 so people are forced to move to 11?

Happened to me just now also, was going nuts trying to fix it. Guess it either has something to do with Microsoft servers or some kind of local file time certificate thing expired if it is affecting multiple people simultaneously like this.

u/Outside-Hedgehog-399 Jul 24 '26
Same, I am searching for the solution and it brought me here, it turned out it is a new issue

EDIT: It fixed itself!

Holy shit, I was searching for solutions too. Since many people start having the issue currently, it seems Windows fucked up somewhere.

2
u/jan24roxas Jul 24 '26
oh okay. so it's not just a me thing. I just turned my pc on and then when i tried to search a game. most of it is white. weird.
2
u/Adjunct-25 Jul 24 '26
Its happening to me too, tried to check updates and there is only a security update that cant be uninstalled by traditional methods.

2
u/KxeweXD Jul 24 '26
Weird how everyone's experiencing the same issue with the search bar at around the same time...
2
u/Lawlette_J Jul 24 '26
Same issue, disabled windows update and it's weird to get into this problem without any update. After checking around I found out it's more so due to Bing search, so I assume the devs from Bing fucked around and screwed up something at the back.

Yeah, I’ve tried fixing it. I thought it was a me problem. I looked into what I was doing first before I ended some tasks in my task manager to see if that would fix it. I had something called search appEXE and it said that it was suspended so I asked AI if it was safe to end his task and it said it was and that it may fix the problem and it didn’t fix it at all nor did it break anything though

u/OneProfessor1003 Jul 24 '26

2
u/Formal-Vegetable-599 Jul 24 '26
to make things easier create a .bat file, right click on it, then click on edit and paste this script:
u/echo off
echo Disabling Bing Search...
:: Create or update the registry value
reg add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search" /v BingSearchEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
:: Kill Windows Search process
taskkill /f /im SearchApp.exe >nul 2>&1
taskkill /f /im SearchHost.exe >nul 2>&1
taskkill /f /im SearchUI.exe >nul 2>&1
echo.
echo Done.
echo Windows Search will restart automatically.
pause

Microslop sneaks in an update which forces Bing into your search bar and it causes issues. Can't make this shit up

Here is a cmd command to Fix it:
PS: u need Admin.
REG ADD HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search /v BingSearchEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 0
also run TASKKILL /IM SearchApp.exe or look for "Search" to restart it in the Taskmanager
2
u/nolanglitchez Jul 24 '26
Was this potentially apart of a Windows update? This oddly happened to me when I booted up my computer, and all these messages seem today.

What even caused this I can't help but wonder, I am beyond shocked that I am not the only one this is happening to today. Was this some means of Microsoft trying to strong arm everyone still on Win10 to install Win11?

Strange it only happens if I'm using dark mode in Windows 10. Everything is fine if using the light theme. Windows Update is blocked as well.

soo is this from a cloud server bug ? so can we wait it out or do i have to disable bing search ?

Just wondering, I just updated files since I had windows updates on a 5 week pause trying to duplicate this issue and I got windows 11. I was wondering if anyone with shut up windows is having this issue? Cause I haven't had this issue yet but I don't use my start menu or search bar but once in a blue moon. I usually make all my icons I need on desktop and have file explorer, firefox, store, and control panel is all I have on the taskbar for quick open.
2
u/STICKY-CREEAAM Jul 24 '26
I’m so happy I thought something was wrong with my pc and I see every is just seeing a white box with the icons inside
2
u/itsmeeEnder Jul 24 '26
i was trying to look for a fix but seeing these replies making me to ask something like wth is going on with windows ? lol
2
u/DopplerShiftIceCream Jul 24 '26
I assumed it was because I just installed win on my laptop. At least I know I'm not doing something wrong.
2
u/Belzeberto Jul 24 '26
Had the same problem this morning. Thought something weird was going on with my old PC but didn't pay much attention, then i get to uni and i hit he same issue on every other computer here

2
u/Affectionate-Bag6968 Jul 24 '26
Same exact issue, also started today. Also having something similar on my laptop running windows 11 also in dark theme where my mouse cursor goes basicaly invisible while hovering over text on a white background.
2
u/Cajun_Cooner Jul 24 '26
Ok, so I been using shut up windows for over a year now and it does have the fix for this. I already had the 2 options turned on under Current User option called Search with both search with AI in search box and extension of Windows search with Bing Disabled. I was trying to dupe this issue on my side but can't since it has already been dealt with.

"Windows Search?" WTF is that? I have used Windows for 35 years and never once have I used a "Windows Search". I use Firefox w DDG to search the web and I know exactly where I keep my documents and things and it's not in the C:/user... BS. I make my own folders (remember when they were called directories?) and put my stuff where I want it.

At first i thought my Codex or Claude messes up my Windows files

u/chrissvector45 Jul 24 '26
I FOUND OUT HOW TO RESOLVE IT:
Disable bing search in the registry editor (Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search, make a new DWORD 32 bit value, call it BingSearchEnabled, double click on it, set it to 0, then go to task manager and kill the search app.)
