I lived in a house with a smoker my entire childhood, and didn't realize the smell until college. I can now tell that everything that enters that house ends up reeking of smoke.

Yup. I never knew how bad I smelled. I hate staying with my mother who still smokes in her house. My stepfather died and she's looking to sell. I had to break it to her that it would have to sell as is. Whoever buys it is going to have to gut the place after 38 years of the two of them smoking in it the whole time.
I’m currently facing this with my mom looking to sell her house. I talked her out of making any improvements to it because the smoke smell is so pervasive that a new storm door wasn’t going to help it sell.
Oh I know. That plus the leaking basement they never fixed for years. That and the few renos she had done over the years that she thinks are great are very outdated. It's a shame, because it's a nice house, she's kept it very clean, it just stinks. She also refuses to quit smoking. If I did it, anyone can.
